Take a pen and write the number 6174 on a piece of paper. It looks just like any other number, doesn’t it But what if I told you that it was a magic number
Do you think this is a joke Well, let’s see the magic with a quick experiment.
Start with a four-digit number — make sure that at least two of the digits are different, and if three digits are the same, the other digit can’t be different by 1, for example,1112 and 6566 are not the suitable numbers. You may use, for example, 1113.
Now take 7173 as the example. Put the digits in the new order to make the smallest possible number: 1377. Then, the largest number: 7731.
Let’s subtract the smaller number from the larger number: 7731-1377 = 6354.
Go back to the second step and repeat the process:
6543-3456 = 3087 8730-0378 = 8352 8532-2358 = 6174
Ta-da! There you have it: 6174!
You can repeat this experiment with another number. What do you end up with Is it 6174
This number is known as Kaprekar’s constant. It is named after the Indian mathematician Dattatreya Ramchandra Kaprekar. He discovered the magic behind this number in 1949 after performing the above process.
Kaprekar had always enjoyed playing with numbers. But when he showed the magic of 6174 at an international mathematics meeting, other mathematicians didn’t roll out the red carpet. They thought it was a useless discovery and made fun of him. Yet to this day, no scientist can fully explain why this magic works.
Would you like to dive deeper Try different numbers and see how many steps you need to get to 6174. Which number requires the most steps How about the least
21.Which of the following is suitable for the experiment
A.1111. B.1112. C.1113. D.6566.
22.If the number for the experiment is 2025, which of the following is the next step
A.5220-0225 B.5220-2520 C.2025-0252 D.2025-0225
23.What does the underlined part “roll out the red carpet” probably mean
A.Show their opinions. B.Talk loudly.
C.Express their welcome. D.Understand clearly.
24.What does the writer think of this experiment
A.It’s useless. B.It’s worth studying. C.It’s explainable. D.It’s hard to carry out.
25.What’s the best title of the text
A.A Magic Number B.A Math Competition
C.A Great Scientist D.An International Discovery

About 40 years ago, satellites saw a few small areas of vegetation in the Antarctic Peninsula. These plants covered about 740 square meters.
Since then, however, the land has been turning green quickly. A new study shows that mosses (苔藓) have taken up more than 12 million square meters — nearly four times the size of New York’s Central Park! Based on satellite pictures from 1986 to 2021, the study shows that the greening has sped up by 30 percent since 2016. That’s fast enough to cover nearly 75 football fields per year.
“Our findings show that the effect of climate change has no limit in its reach,” said Thomas Roland, an environmental scientist. “Even in the most faraway and lonely land, the landscape (景观) is changing.” The Antarctic is the coldest place on Earth. But it has recently been troubled by extreme (极端的) heat events. This summer, a record-breaking heat wave hit parts of the Antarctic. Temperatures were about 10℃ higher than normal in mid-July.
As the planet heats up, Antarctica will keep on warming, which means this greening may happen faster. The more the peninsula greens, the more soil will form. Non-native plants will probably take root in the land. Antarctica’s native wildlife and ecological (生态的) system can be in danger as a result. “Seeds and small pieces of plants can easily find their way along with tourists, birds and the wind,” Roland said. The plant cover could reduce the Antarctic’s ability to reflect the sun’s heat energy back into space. That’s because darker surfaces take in more heat.
At present, the Antarctic landscape is still almost all snow, ice and rock. In the long run, however, they could help further encourage the growth of plants as the climate continues to warm. “The landscape in the Antarctic could be changed forever,” said another scientist.
26.What was the size of the vegetation in the Antarctic Peninsula about 40 years ago
A.About 740 square meters. B.More than 75 football fields.
C.More than 12 million square meters. D.About the size of New York’s Central Park.
27.Paragraph 3 explains ________.
A.how Thomas found the Antarctic B.why the Antarctic keeps greening
C.why the Antarctic is the coldest place D.how the landscape in the Antarctic changes
28.What does the underlined word “they” refer to
A.Snow, ice and rock. B.Plants. C.Tourists, birds and wind. D.Scientists.
29.What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the text
A.To describe the greening in the Antarctic.
B.To explain the reasons for climate change.
C.To warn people of the ecological changes in Antarctic.
D.To call on people to do more research on the peninsula.
30.The structure (结构) of the text is ________.
A. B. C. D.

In a village lived a young and successful businessman, named James. But he often felt unhappy because of the endless challenges he faced.
31 James went to see him and said, “I always have business worries, family troubles and health problems. Please tell me how to make them disappear.” The old man smiled and said, “I’I I give you an answer tomorrow morning. 32 ”James answered, “sure, I can.” The old man asked him to take care of the 100 camels(骆驼)for the night, making sure that they all sat down and rested before James could go to sleep.
33 James answered sadly, “I didn’t sleep at all. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get all the camels to sit together. Even if I managed to get some camels to sit on one side, a few others would stand on the other side.”
“That’s true. Some camels sat down quietly. 34 If you came back later, you would see some of the camels finally sit down, even though they didn’t sit at first,” the old man said. “Problems are just like camels — some problems get solved by themselves, some get solved after your effort, and some don’t get solved even after you have tried your best. Leave such problems to time. 35 ”
James felt a sense of understanding. It completely changed the way he saw life’s challenges.
A. They’ll come to an end. B. I always live in a desert. C. But first, can you do a small thing for me D. But other camels didn’t sit even after lots of effort. E. One day, a wise old man came to the village with 100 camels. F. The next morning, the old man asked James how his night went.

Most of people think sex(性别) can influence interests and jobs. For example, boys do math 36 than girls, while girls are more talented in languages. We usually think this is because of 37 in how boys’ and girls’ brains work. But is it true
According to past studies, some parts of our brains can be different in size. 38 used to think these differences might influence how well men and women think and do things. They found this by scanning(扫描) 39 brains. However, in most of the studies, researchers only scanned fewer than 100 people.
Recently, the UK Biohank, a big database (数据库), scanned the brains of 40,000 people in the UK, 40 new understanding. It showed differences between men and women in size for certain brain parts. About one-third of these parts were found to be larger in men, 41 another third were larger in women.
However, these differences were very 42 , often just a size difference in percentage. The differences are not big to get a conclusion(结论) from them, Camille Williams from the University of Texas at Austin, US, told New Scientist.
According to our life experiences, our brains might 43 in structure and size. For example, even if a part of a man’s brain, good at doing math, is larger than that of a woman, it is 44 because he takes jobs that use math skills. So any brain differences between men and women could be a result of different roles in life and 45 , not a cause.

Have you ever experienced buddy(同伴)reading It allows you and a friend to read and share the same book together. It may take the buddies time to do many reading activities, but it's a wonderful experience. This not only adds to the pleasure of reading, but also has a better understanding of the books.
It is all right to have students take part in buddy reading with same-aged schoolmates, but schools usually pair up(配对)older students with younger ones. Yucai School started such a program in 2022 and has achieved great success.
Thanks to the two-year program, many students from younger to older readers have learned a lot. For example, they learned to be kind and patient when they listened to each other. This experience also makes students get a chance to practice lifelong skills such as communicating with others. A student called Davis said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more and more confident(自信的),as he knew he was a role model for someone.
The school also became a closer community. The reading buddies felt closer as they often met each other. The students were always excited when they saw their buddies pass by in the hallway.
Reading is like a wonderful journey. Buddy reading makes this journey even more fantastic. Now winter vacation is coming. It's a great time to get into books. Why not find a friend, choose a book you both like and read it together
