Tonight was Loy Krathong (水灯节), a Thai festival when people would send out tiny boats with lighted candles so that last year’s problems could sail away, leaving 2 for the new year.
This week, Lek and his elder brother Tong had practiced launching (使下水) krathongs because their sister, Dao, was sick, lying in bed. He put flowers and a white candle in the banana leaves.
“Tong will help launch your boat. Now it’s dinner time and we must get ready for 5 in the restaurant,” said grandma. Like last year, Lek would help in the kitchen while Tong launched krathongs outside for customers. It was all because Lek was too young and 6 .
With customers arriving, dishes were sent into the kitchen to cook. 7 , the night fell.
