When I got to school this morning, I ran into Wendy. She greeted me with a big yawn (哈欠). “Sorry, I didn’t sleep well last night. Two mosquitoes (蚊子) kept me up. I tried to catch them but had no luck. I hate them!”
I showed a cartoon (on the right) to Wendy. She laughed. “That’s funny. Now my sleepiness is all gone! Who drew this ” “Xiao Lin, or Lin Dihuan,” I said. “I like his cartoons. They lift you up when you’re feeling down.”
Xiao Lin loved painting from an early age. But his family was poor. Instead of getting a professional (专业的) art education, the boy taught himself to draw at the age of fourteen. He bought books and magazines from recycling centers and copied the pictures from them. He began drawing for magazines when he was in middle school. In college, Lin studied medicine at his father’s suggestion, but his love for art remained. After graduation, he chose to teach art instead of working as a doctor. Lin hasn’t let his medical studies go to waste, though. His knowledge about medicine often inspires (赋予灵感) new ideas for his artworks.
Lin spends a lot of time drawing every day. While his funny cartoons have received widespread attention and inspired many, they are just a small part of his work. Lin’s drawings often cover traditional Chinese culture. Many people got to know him through his ink-and-brush paintings (水墨画) of China’s 24 Solar Terms (二十四节气). The artist has also used cartoons to introduce young people to ancient Chinese classics. As some of these works have been published and displayed in the West, they have also made foreigners interested in Chinese culture.
No matter what Lin draws, you feel relaxed when you see it. Sometimes, we just need to turn to artworks like his for a different take on the world.
Last night, I fought hard with a mosquito, and it ended in a draw (平局) — I lost sleep while it missed its meal.

17. What would be the best title for the passage

Put on your 3D glasses and the dinosaur jumps off the screen. There are butterflies in the air around you. How does this happen
At a 3D movie, it seems that a red ball is jumping right at you. But the ball isn’t truly leaving the screen. What’s happening is that your brain and eyes work together to work out the ball’s size, color, shape, and movement. It looks real, but it’s an illusion! Our eyes are like video cameras. They notice every detail of the red ball and how it moves. At the same time, our brain (大脑) guesses what will happen next. That’s why we think the red ball is flying straight at us!
But how do 3D movies make objects seem like they’re floating (飘浮) in the air They trick our brains! Here’s how it works: the movie is filmed using two cameras with lenses (镜头) placed close to each other, just like our eyes. When the movie plays, these two pictures are shown on the screen at the same time. Each picture is a bit different from the other because each camera catches its own view. The two pictures overlap (重叠), and that’s why they look unclear without 3D glasses.
This is where the special glasses come in. A 3D movie uses two kinds of light: horizontal (side-to-side) light and vertical (up-and-down) light. The glasses help your left eye see the picture using horizontal light and your right eye see the picture using vertical light. Then, your brain mixes the two pictures into one. That’s when the magic of 3D happens!
With 3D glasses, the experience can be fun and exciting. Just remember that it’s all a clever trick to make you feel like you’re right there in the movie!
18. How does the writer start the passage
A. By telling a story. B. By listing some opinions. C. By showing a fact. D. By asking and answering.
19. What does the underlined word “illusion” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Something unreal. B. Something unusual. C. Something unclear. D. Something unpopular.

②The two pictures are shown on the screen.
③The two pictures look unclear for overlapping.
④The movie is filmed using two cameras side by side.
⑤The 3D glasses help deal with the horizontal and vertical light.
A. ③②④①⑤ B. ④②⑤③① C. ③①②④⑤ D. ④②③⑤①
21. In which part of a magazine can we read the passage
A. The Big Hits B. Movie Reviews C. The Superstars D. Secrets of Movies

When Mom told me that she had bought tickets for the whole family, I started to wonder if I should have been honest about not being chosen to play in the show. They were so excited for me and everyone asked about it. I was unsure whether they would care as much if they knew I was only working behind the scenes. I liked stage crew (剧务), after all.
No one could imagine how much I was in love with acting. I totally believed there was chance I would be the one who saved the show if somebody was absent. Once Susan missed rehearsal (彩排) for some reason and I volunteered to stand in and read her lines.
The show day came.
I woke up at a quarter to five. I had been so excited after the rehearsal the day before that I didn’t get any sleep at all. The lights and curtains (帷幕) the stage crew put up changed the gym (体育馆) into a real theater. Even though I didn’t have to wear theatrical makeup, I did anyway. The smell of the makeup paint was enough to throw me into another world.
We had two shows that day, one in front of my schoolmates and one in the evening for the public. During the school show, someone threw a paper plane onto the stage (舞台), and the director had to stop the show and teach everyone about proper audience (观众) manners.
Mr. Ellison said, “Live show is challenging. You just have to roll with it. You’ll get used to it. Make sure you’re here by six tonight, and tell the one you’re bringing to come early for good seats. We’re almost sold out.”
My sister Diana dropped me off at 5:50 p.m.. The stage crew didn’t have to be there until 6:30, but I was excited, and I still hadn’t told my parents I wouldn’t be on stage. They could find it out when they saw the show — even mine behind the scenes helps make our dreams come true. I would deal with it then.
(— Adapted from A New and Distant Star)

In 1097, Su Dongpo, a famous Chinese poet, was exiled (流放) to Hainan, a faraway and underdeveloped island. Life there was very challenging, but Su Dongpo refused to give up.
When he arrived, Su Dongpo found that the people in Hainan lived a poor life. Many had little food, and there were no schools for children. Instead of feeling angry about his exile, Su Dongpo decided to help. He believed that education could change lives. So he started teaching the local children how to read and write. Parents were overjoyed, dreaming of a brighter future for their families. His small school brought hope to the community.
Life wasn’t easy for Su Dongpo, either. Sometimes, he didn’t have enough to eat. But instead of feeling sorry for himself, Su Dongpo planted a vegetable garden and learned to cook simple meals. He became close to the local people, learning about their traditions and culture. To pass the time, he wrote poetry inspired by Hainan’s beautiful mountains and seas. His words brought comfort and inspiration to others.
The people of Hainan quickly grew to love Su Dongpo. They admired his kindness, wisdom, and strength. Even though he had been sent to the island as punishment, Su Dongpo didn’t see it that way. He treated his time there as a chance to help others and to find peace within himself.
Years later, Su Dongpo was allowed to leave Hainan. The islanders were heartbroken to see him go because he had changed their lives. Thanks to Su Dongpo’s efforts, the children learned to dream, and the adults found hope. His time in Hainan left a legacy (遗产) that still inspires people today.

A symbol of China
There are a lot of symbols that can help the world learn more about China. The one I choose to recommend is Chinese tea.
Chinese tea has a history of thousands of years and is an important part of Chinese culture. It is not only a kind of drink but also a way to express hospitality. Different types of tea, such as green tea and Oolong tea, reflect the rich cultural heritage of China.
In my daily life, I often enjoy tea with my family. Drinking tea together brings us closer and helps me relax after a busy day. I also enjoy learning about tea-making skills and the elegant tea ceremonies.
I encourage more students to explore Chinese tea culture. It is a great way to appreciate Chinese traditions and understand the harmony between humans and nature.
