When people think of tigers, words like “ strong” and “dangerous” come into their mind. But now, the big animal is calling for our help. There were once eight kinds of tigers in the world, but three died out during last century. In the past 70 years, the number of the Siberian tigers has gone from as many as 300 to somewhere between 18 and 22.
The World Wildlife Fund started a programme. It is about to put an end to tiger poaching (非法狩猎) and save wild tigers. China, together with 12 other countries, has joined in. The aim is to double the number of wild tigers in the next ten years.
According to research by Chinese officers and WWF, the Siberian tiger is already one of the world’s most endangered animals “If the government doesn’t do anything, it’s quite possible that there will be no more Siberian tigers in China in 10 to 20 years.” said Zhu Chunguan, director at WWF’s Beijing office.
Wild animals such as deer and wild boars are tigers’ main food. The poaching of these animals is the greatest danger to tigers. Traps (陷阱) are also a danger. “Volunteers from WWF remove traps every year, but we cannot clear all the traps ourselves,” Zhu said. The most important thing people can do is to save the animals tigers eat. “To protect the tigers, we need to call on more people to stop hunting wild animals.”

①You may know Nelson Mandela, who worked all his life to help black people in South Africa. But do you know about the Mandela Effect
②It is a situation where many people wrongly remember something. This name started in 2020 when people remembered that Nelson Mandela died in the 1980s. But Mandela got out of prison in 1990 and died in 2013. Then an American called it the Mandela Effect.
③There are many examples. In 2022 in China, on the Internet, lots of people talked about the sentence by Mencius (孟子): “Thus when Heaven is about to confer a great office on any man.” Most people remembered it was “si (斯)”. Later, People’s Education Press (人教社) ended the talk by saying that all its textbooks say “shi”.
④Experts have looked into the reasons for this effect. Our minds may try to fill in missing gaps (信息空缺) in the memory. It is like inventing a story. However, this is not lying, but remembering things that never happened.
⑤The Internet may be another reason for it, as the news we read might not be true from the beginning. A study showed that false news can go around faster and reach more people than the truth. So, the Internet might be a more important reason for this effect.
44.According to the passage, the Mandela Effect is a situation where ________.
A.many people try to find out the truth B.people can just easily forget something
C.different people have different memories D.many people remember something wrong

D.“si” was right in the past while “shi” is correct today.
46.Experts think that the Mandela Effect may happen when ________.
A.it is difficult for people to remember something
B.people try to tell a lie about something important
C.people try to make up a story about what happened
D.people get wrong information online about something
47.What is the best structure of this passage
A. B. C. D.
C
“Without music, life would be a mistake,” famous German philosopher (哲学家) Friedrich Nietzsche said over a century ago. Music is a big part of our daily lives. But in recent years, some US schools have cut Music classes to control budgets (预算).
For example, Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired over 1,000 teachers. Among them, 10 percent of the teachers taught Art or Music, according to The Washington Times. In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, such as China and the UK, Music classes are not thought to be as important as ones like Science, Maths and History. That’s partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn’t tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus on (关注) subjects that are tested more often.
However, learning music is beneficial (有益的) in many ways.
When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth Guilmartin of MusicTogether, an early childhood music development programme. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode (解码) them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time.
Music has a special connection with science as well. You can see that many scientists are good at playing music: Einstein played the violin, and German physicist Max Planck was talented in playing the piano.
48.Some schools in the US have cut Music classes because ________.
A.students in the US weren’t interested in music
B.they were too difficult to learn
C.there weren’t enough music teachers in the US
D.the schools wanted to control budgets

A.public schools B.fired teachers
C.parents in Chicago D.students in Chicago
50.How many scientists who are good at playing music are mentioned in this passage

73.advised him to tidy it up
advise sb. to do sth. 故填advised him to tidy it up。
74. have pity on may die without your help
【详解】have a pity on表示“同情……”,动词短语,此处是祈使句,动词用原形;may“可能”,后跟动词原形;die“死亡”;without“没有”;your help“你的帮助”。故填have pity on;may die without your help。
75.the wetlands smaller in order to have more space for
【详解】根据中英文对照可知,“缩小湿地”,英语可表达为make the wetlands smaller;in order to“为了”;have more space for“给……更多的空间”。故填the wetlands smaller in order to have more space for。
76.white snow covers the whole earth
故填white snow covers the whole earth。
77.hear the wind still blowing
结合句子结构,应填hear the wind still howling。故填hear the wind still howling。
78.Did you buy anything special for yourself
Did you buy anything special for yourself“你给自己买什么特别的东西了吗”。
79.例文
Dear Chairperson,
I would like to join the Environment Protection Society.
I am a student in Grade 8. I like reading books and swimming very much. My favourite subject is maths because it’s interesting. I love nature and understand the importance of protecting our environment. That’s why I want to be a member of the Environment Protection Society.
Sadly, we are facing serious problems now. More and more natural disasters are happening all over the world and cause a lot of trouble to our life. Besides, the number of the endangered animals is becoming larger and larger. Wild animals have less space to live and less food to eat. Many of them are now endangered because of our activities.
It’s time for us to take action to protect the Earth. As students, we must help more people to realize the serious problems which are mainly caused by us. The government needs to build more reserves to protect wild animals and make laws to prevent people from destroying the Earth. If I can be a member of the Environment Protection Society, we can make a difference to our Earth together.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon!
Yours sincerely,
Millie
