A father was very worried about his son, who was 15 or 16 years old and seemed to have no courage at all. So, he went to a famous boxing coach and asked if the coach could help his son. The coach agreed and said, “Leave your son with me. I'm sure he'll change in three months. But you can't visit him during this time.” The father said OK.
Three months later, as they had promised, the father came back to get his son. The coach set up a friendly match between the boy and an experienced boxer to show the training result. As soon as the match started, the boy was knocked down hard. But to everyone's surprise, he quickly got up and faced his opponent again. He was knocked down again right away, but he got back on his feet immediately. This happened over and over. The boy was knocked down 16 times, but each time he stood up bravely, ready to face the challenge.
The coach then asked the father, “Do you think your son's performance shows courage ” The father, who felt a bit ashamed, said, “I'm really disappointed. I didn't think he would still be knocked down so easily after three months of training here.”
The coach shook his head and said, “I feel sorry for you. You don't get it. You only see the times he falls and the simple winning or losing. Don't you see the courage and the strength of will of your son to get up each time That's real power. A strong person isn't someone who never falls, but someone who gets up every time they do. That's what real courage is.”

In small towns, people are used to saying hello to their neighbors in stores, on the streets and in front of their homes. In today's city life, people may feel uncomfortable talking to neighbors they do not know well in line at the supermarket. But greeting your neighbors is actually good for you, especially if you say hello to six people, according to a recent survey.
Saying hello to people increases well-being(幸福), but six is the magic number. The well-being score increases from zero to six and then there are no further increases. These results are part of the Gallup National Health and Well-Being Index which studies overall well-being and is calculated on a scale of (在......范围内)0 to 100. The survey was carried out from May 30th to June 6th, 2023 and was based on the answers from 4,556 Americans. It covered social well-being, physical well-being, community well-being and more. People who said they didn't say hello to anyone in their neighborhood scored a 51.5. People who greeted six neighbors had a score of 64.1.
You might think that saying hello to neighbors is only about social well-being, but that actually isn't the case. In fact, regular (经常的) greetings also improve a person's physical well-being and community well-being. ▲ You will be more likely to speak to people if you think your community is safe. Your physical well-being can improve if you are getting out and walking around your neighborhood.
"We don't require that you know the person well; just stop and talk to him," said Dan Witters, the survey's director, "But the more people to whom you say hello, the greater the probability is that you're actually going to start a conversation with them." While this is just a survey for now, saying hello on a regular basis is a good way to improve your own well-being.

We all want to be successful in achieving our goals. Goals give our lives meaning and help to improve us. However, have you ever tried to reach a big goal only to finally give up 46 We usually focus on the end goals instead of the small and important steps we take to get us there.
47 The problem of not doing this is that we end up losing our motivation (动力). We usually lose heart when we aren’t sure how far we’re away from our goals. So it is important to celebrate our small wins along the way. Celebrating small wins gives us a feeling of pride and makes us want to go further towards the next goal.
To celebrate small wins, you can think about what you enjoy the most each time you complete a step. This could be anything like giving yourself your favorite coffee or taking a trip somewhere. 48
Sometimes, we may give up because we don’t know how close we are to success and forget how much we’ve done. 49 This will tell you how far you’ve come in achieving your goal.
When we focus too much on the end goal, it seems too far away to get to. 50 Instead, you can consider it as going down a hill with perhaps a few nice restaurants to relax in on the way down. Enjoying your progress in this way will make long-term goals seem easier to achieve.

It was about 2:00 am. I was driving my taxi on the way to pick up a passenger. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark. I just saw a single light in a ground floor window, I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice.
After a long silence, the door opened and a small woman in her eighties stood before me. She has a small suitcase beside her. I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help her. She took my arm and walked slowly toward the car. She kept thanking me for my kindness.
“It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”
“Oh, you’re such a good young man.” She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through city center ”
“It’s not the shortest way.” I answered immediately.
“Oh, I’m familiar with the city. And I’m in no hurry.” she said. “I’m on my way to a hospice(临终医院). I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long. It would be the last time for me to travel around the city...”
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器). For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as a lift operator and the neighborhood where she had lived in. And she also told me to park in front of a furniture shop that once had been a ball room. She had gone dancing there as a girl.
Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a particular building. She just sat and stared into the darkness, saying nothing. At dawn(黎明), she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”
We drove in silence to the address she had given me. “How much shall I pay you ” she asked, “Nothing.” I replied.
“You have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” I said.
Almost without thinking, I gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly with tears. Our hug ended with her words, “Your kindnesses have brought me the last sunshine.”
