阅读理解(共 15 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 30 分)
阅读下面三篇材料,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
Stand on a ‘carpet’ As an old Chinese saying goes, “Nine out of every 10 towers are leaning.” One big reason is the ground. For example, the Leaning Tower of Pisa(比萨斜塔) stands on soft and uneven(不平的) ground. Some parts of the ground are weak. Think of building a tower on a soft carpet(地毯). The tower can only get to a certain height and then it starts to lean.
Power of water You may be surprised to know that some popular buildings also lean to one side, such as the Huqiu Tower(虎丘塔) in Suzhou, China. These towers are built in rainy places. They are rich in underground water. This water can damage(损坏) the foundation(地基) of the tower. As we all know, Suzhou is a water town in China. The foundation of the Huqiu Tower in Suzhou has been damaged by water.
Human mistakes Leaning towers are not rare (稀有的) in Italy and even around the world. Actually, we humans did some silly things to cause the problem. In Italy, people once rebuilt the inside of the Garisenda Tower. It damaged the tower’s body and made it lean even more. London built an underground parking lot and a subway around Big Ben. It changed the ground under the tower and made it start to lean.

Growing old is something that happens to all of us. How do you feel about getting old I chatted with my grandma to find out her opinion.
Born in 1927, my grandma, Solveig King, grew up in Sweden during the hard times of the 1930s. Everything was rationed(定量配给). There were no outdoor lights and no running water. “But it was a very happy childhood: snow every winter and always sunshine in summer, enough food, but nothing expensive which is not necessary,” she said. This explains where she got her habit of keeping old boxes and bottles and never wasting any food. It’s a habit that many people of her age seem to have.
In 2015, I went to live with my grandma for a few months. We would sit together and read books, go to the swimming pool, watch some travel programs or documentaries on TV, do some gardening, try some board games, and then do it all again the next day. I felt like time was flying by!
Now 96 years old and in a wheelchair(轮椅), Solveig can’t go swimming anymore, but she still keeps up with her other hobbies.“I don’t feel ‘old’, just a little disabled! But I never wish I could do something I know I can’t do. That’s a waste of energy! Nor do I ever wish to relive any part of my life. I am very happy with the road I have taken.”
As for getting older and wiser, Solveig keeps an adventurous mindset(思维模式). “Soon, I’ll need to go and live at a nursing home for two weeks while my family is away. I’m excited because I’ll get to learn all about old people!” she said.
( )56. The writer chatted with his grandma because ______.

C. his grandma is over 90 now and in a wheelchair
D. he wanted to know his grandma’s opinion about getting old
( )57. Grandma’s habit of not wasting things came from ______.
A. her happy childhood B. the other people of her age
C. the hard times she has experienced D. the weather in winter and summer

A. has lots of hobbies B. taught the writer to swim.
C. feels lonely without the writer D. likes doing the same things every day
( )59. When Solveig is 96 years old, ______.
A. she gives up most of her hobbies
B. she is disabled and feels sad
C. she wishes she could go swimming again
D. she is very pleased with the choices in her life

C
We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.
In fact, we all know smiling is a response(反应) to things that bring us joy or create happiness.
It’s one reason the UK holds a National Smile Month every year. This year it starts on May 13, and it is organized by the Oral Health Foundation(口腔健康基金会). The foundation hopes that a month of smiling across the nation will make people think about the importance of brushing their teeth, eating fewer sugary foods, and visiting their dentist twice a year for a check-up.
★ . “British Smile” means “any smile with bad teeth” in the Urban Dictionary. In the US, however, the “Hollywood Smile” gets its name because American movie stars are so proud to show off their beautiful teeth.
But what about smiling in the UK in general Do the British smile a lot, or do they look sad all the time It’s said that the British practice the “stiff upper lip”, meaning that they don’t often show their feelings; they neither smile nor cry. But this is false: A British person likes to smile as much as anyone else.
In Britain, smiling is like everywhere else. It depends on the situation. For example, you wouldn’t expect anyone to smile at a funeral(葬礼)or during a formal(正式的) meeting. But if you were at a party, you’d find everyone smiling from ear to ear. However, smiling is not allowed in some situations. For example, since 2005, Britain hasn’t allowed smiling in passport photographs. At other times, for example at work and school, you simply smile when it’s natural to smile.
So, the British are no more and no less likely to smile than anyone else. But smiling is good for you, no doubt about it, even if you do have a few bad teeth. And smiling is good for those around you too. This alone makes National Smile Month a great idea.
( )61. the Foundation organizes the National Smile Month to make people pay attention to ______.
A. daily diet B. oral health
C. cleaning habits D. physical examinations
( )62. Which of the following can be put in ★
A. The British are too shy to smile
B. Smiling has shown its importance
C. The British are known for their bad teeth
D. National Smile Month is welcome in the UK
( )63. “Stiff Upper Lip” is best translated into ______.
A. 笑不露齿 B. 黯然神伤 C. 儒雅谦逊 D. 不动声色
( )64. British people can feel free to smile when they ______.
A. are present at funerals B. attend formal meetings
C. take part in birthday parties D. are photographed for their passports
( )65. The last paragraph is written to ______.
A. introduce the event in the UK B. encourage people to smile
C. advertise the dentists in the US D. explain why the British smile less

Money is one of the most important inventions because if we didn’t have money, there would be no trade. In the past, all kinds of things were used as money, including gold, shells and even dead rats. No one really knows when money was invented. It’s believed that coins were invented in China because metal has been used for centuries and we do know that paper money was invented in China, too, sometime around the
10th century AD. But it wasn’t until the 9th century that European people began using money. When it was first invented, there were many different kinds. But now, of course we are heading towards a single-world money. I mean, already the American dollar is used for international trade. And now many countries in Europe used the euro instead of the franc or mark. However, it will be a long time before there is a single-globe currency.
