Kevin Beard is my class instructor. I was shocked when I arrived one day to find him standing in front of the room telling a story, with tears streaming down his cheeks. I was worried something had gone terribly wrong in his life, but as I listened to him talk, I heard him use words like “amazing” and “accomplishment.” I realized his tears weren’t out of sadness, but happiness. Just a few days earlier, he’d received his GED (普通教育文凭), at the age of 52.
Having dyslexia (阅读障碍) Kevin left school at a young age and then managed to support himself by taking odd jobs. In his mid-30s, Kevin finally got an opportunity for a job. Amazingly, when he came clean with them about his education, the interviewers said they’d hi re him as long as he got his GED. He agreed, optimistic about this new career.
Kevin studied hard, and he did it for more than a decade, learning and practicing and correcting his mistakes, often late into the night. It was a huge challenge, something Kevin compares to “climbing a mountain.” Whenever Kevin took a test, he posted the results on his bedroom wall so that he could watch his progress. “I needed to see myself moving forward, and I wanted to speak,” he said.
Finally, he made it. “I can’t really describe what it’s like to finally achieve this,” he said. “I can hardly even put it into words. People are giving me graduation gifts! It’s a dream come true.”
This might sound like a perfect ending. But for Kevin, it’s a new beginning and his next step is college. “Now that I’ve accomplished my GED, I’m hungry for education,” he said.
24. Why did Kevin cry in the classroom
A. He was worried about his job. B. He had reached one of his goals.
C. He was moved by a touching story. D. He had experienced something terrible.
25. What do the underlined words “came clean” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Told the truth B. Passed a test
C. Made himself tidy D. Got the job
26. How did Kevin encourage himself to keep going to get his GED
A. By learning something difficult. B. By writing himself encouraging words.
C. By reporting his test results to his tutor. D. By reminding himself of his improvement.
27. What can we learn from Kevin’s story
A. Easy come, easy go. B. Grasp all, lose all.
C. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. D. Well begun is half done.

To help out important insects like bees and butterflies, bus stops across UK are getting living roofs. Small gardens on bus shelter roofs are being planted with flowers chosen to help support the struggling insects.
Humans depend on bees and other “pollinators (授粉者)” like butterflies to help grow plants, such as flowers and trees. But with humans taking over more and more land for cities, roads and farms, more natural areas have disappeared. The Wildlife Trusts, a group which works to protect wildlife in the UK, says that the insect numbers there have dropped by 50% since 1970. Bee bus stops are a small step toward supporting these important insects.
The advertising company Clear Channel is working with The Wildlife Trusts and city governments to set up bee bus stops in cities across the UK. Bee bus stops are like ordinary bus shelters but small gardens have been added to the roofs to attract bees and butterflies. The company plans to set up 1,000 bee bus stops in the UK.
Clear Channel already has bee bus stop programs in several countries in Europe. In the Netherlands, the city of Utrecht has 300 bee bus stops. Research shows that these bus stops— along with many other steps taken to support pollinators — may be helping. After decades of dropping numbers, bee populations in the Netherlands seem to have become more stable over the last few years.
The little gardens can also help to slightly lower city temperatures. Even though the bus shelter gardens are small, together they add up to a much larger area. Thirzah McSherry, who works for The Wildlife Trusts, says, “We’re living through a nature and climate crisis and we need to use every tool we’ve got to deal with it.”
28. Why are bee bus stop gardens being built in the UK
A. To beautify the city. B. To improve city farming.
C. To protect the environment. D. To provide shelters for pollinating insects.
29. What leads to the insect numbers dropping sharply in England
A. Losses of forests. B. Climate changes.
C. Human activities. D. Natural disasters.
30. How does the author show the positive effect of the bee bus stop programs
A. By analyzing the data. B. By making a comparison.
C. By giving examples. D. By doing an experiment.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. UK is building bee bus stops. B. The city environment is getting worse.
C. City should build more gardens for the insects. D. The bee bus stop is the best way to save the city.
D
What is standard English Does it really matter With the rise of Internet technologies, does anyone actually speak a pure form of their own English anymore Many English speakers have found Americanisms slowly influencing their language. English may be the international language of communication — but which kind
As a teacher, a favorite question continually asked by my students is “Which is better, American or British English ” My answer is always the same, “It depends!” These days, we can also add the Australian variety, as learners in Asia where I live are more exposed to Australian English and are more likely to study in Australia than in the United States or the UK, although the difference between Australian and British English is very small and mainly vocabulary-based.
So what can influence whether foreign learners are better off learning a particular standard of English Put simply, it depends on what is more suitable. Learners need to think over their academic, work or social needs. If someone is working for a US-owned company then the company will probably require American English in its written communication. Similarly if you are studying to be a tour guide in an area that has many British tourists, it makes sense to pay more attention to that standard. If a learner is going to study in Australia then studying Australian English will help him in the long run.
When I have managed language schools, there was often healthy competition between teachers of different nationalities for the importance of their particular standard of English. Language schools abroad may prefer one particular standard of English, and therefore sometimes, understandably, give preference to that particular nationality of teacher.
Personally though, I like to keep an open mind, as there can also be advantages for both students and teachers. Students get to be exposed to more varieties of English, providing them with a more well-rounded education. So teachers should pay attention to the differences in varieties, increasing their own knowledge base.
32. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 1
A. To introduce some general information on English. B. To bring up the topic of standard English.
C. To discuss the importance of English. D. To explain what standard English is.
33. What can we learn about Australian English from paragraph 2
A. It has been influenced by Asian languages. B. It is most popular with international students.
C. It is the author’s preferred variety of English. D. It differs from British English mostly in vocabulary.
34. What should a learner consider when choosing a variety of English according to the author
A. His educational level. B. His personal needs.
C. His own interest. D. His nationality.
35. What is the author’s attitude to learning different varieties of English
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Surprised. D. Uncaring.
