There are two main kinds of writing systems (体系) in the world. Some writing systems use alphabets (字母表). Alphabet writing systems normally use letters to tell you what sounds to make for the words. Arabic and English both use an alphabet. There are 26 letters in the English alphabet and two more letters in the Arabic alphabet. The first alphabet in history appeared in the Middle East about 3,000 years ago. And the English and Arabic alphabets both come from this alphabet.
Some writing systems use something more visual (视觉的) and livelier to show the meanings of words. Picture writing started 5,000 years ago in the Middle East. Modern Chinese uses a similar picture writing system today. Japanese borrows some symbols that are completely the same as pictures in Chinese or symbols that were turned from the pictures in Chinese. For example, the Chinese word for fish reads “yu” and the Japanese word reads “sakana”, but both languages write it in the same way. There are thousands of pictures or symbols in such writing systems—you have to learn 4,000 of them to read Chinese.
Languages sometimes change their writing systems. Before 1423 the Korean language used the Chinese writing system. In 1423, the Koreans invented their own alphabet system. Now Korean uses an alphabet system. Turkiye changed its writing system too. Before 1928, Turkish used the Arabic alphabet. But today it uses an alphabet like that of English, but with some added symbols, like “ ” and “ ”.
Today, in many languages, people use new symbols to explain what they mean. For example, many people use symbols such as and when they write text messages or e-mails online. These symbols can show how we feel. They are called emoticons (表情符号) because they tell people about our emotions.

Which do you like better, e-books or paper books
Our school English newspaper surveyed 2000 students on their reading preferences. Here are the results.
About 33% of the students who took the survey prefer to read e-books. They think e-books are much cheaper than paper books. What’s more, they think it’s easy to read e-books. Other students like reading paper books. They point out that paper books feel real and are comfortable to read. They also argue that reading e-books is bad for our eyes.
Though e-books are becoming popular, I still choose paper books to read. I like taking notes and underlining wonderful sentences on paper books.
