Influenced by the great artist Qi Baishi, the cartoon makers drew all the animals, plants and rocks in the film with ink and a brush. It’s only about 15 minutes long, but it took lots of work. The cartoon artists drew everything by hand. They used different kinds of lines and colors to bring everything to life!
The Legend of Sealed Book, 1983It also used ink wash painting for its backgrounds. And it used other traditional arts, too. The characters (人物) used makeup (妆容) in Peking Opera to help show their personalities (个性). When I was young, I loved paper cutting and I was pretty good at it. As I grew up, I became busy and didn’t have much time for it. Later, I stopped doing it.
However, the news I came across online touched my heart and changed my mind. A little girl from Jieyang, Guangdong was practicing the lion dance when a professional lion dance performance team (专业舞狮表演队) passed by. As soon as they saw the girl practicing, they started to beat drums and gongs for her and quickly she did a lion dance in return. People around all cheered for her. Her love for the ancient Chinese culture evoked my strong memories of paper cutting.
I remembered the happy times of making paper cuttings with my teacher and friends in the club. When I was ten, I joined the paper cutting club. Every Monday and Friday, I learned to make paper cuttings there. Our teacher, Ms. Li, was very talented. With a pair of scissors and a piece of paper, she could create lively works (作品). That amazed us. And we learned much from her. Together, we created lots of works. They covered many topics, including animals, flowers and things about Chinese history. Every time we held a paper cutting show, our works attracted many visitors.

Many old Chinese brands have disappeared because young people don’t know about them. But recently, some old Chinese brands have made a comeback. It’s a good start, but there’s more to it.
In early September, anger over a makeup brand’s eyebrow pencils (眉笔) lit up the Internet. Some people thought that it was too expensive as it cost 79 yuan to get one eyebrow pencil. Shortly after, a Chinese hair care brand started to sell three large bottles of hair care products well for the same price. It showed that Chinese products could still be cost-effective.
Many Chinese brands took their chance by selling through livestreaming. What’s more, they also helped sell other products. For example, hosts of the sports brand washed their hair with hair care products on Sept. 13.
Liu Xing, from Beijing, said she bought the hair care products after learning about their quality (质量) and the brand’s history last week. “The packaging of these products may not be as nice as those of big brands, and the company may not be able to afford the expensive ads, but the quality of the products and the prices surprised me. I wish I knew about the old Chinese brand earlier,” Liu said.
▲ Why For one thing, they think that the products of these Chinese brands are good to use and don’t cost much. For another thing, it makes buyers feel proud. They can help these old brands “come back to life” by buying the products. Buyers believe in these brands and will use their money to help them grow.
However, livestreaming events should only be a start. How can brands keep people interested Good products with good prices. The brands shouldn’t take advantage of people’s trust. They should turn it into a reason to make their products better.
( )8. Why did the Chinese hair care brand start to sell well
A. Because it was cheap. B. Because it had expensive ads.
C. Because it was an old brand. D. Because it had nice packaging.
( )9. What can we know from the passage

C. Customers get two bottles of hair care products for only 79 yuan.
D. Many Chinese brands only sell their own products through
livestreaming.
( )10. Which of the following sentences could be put into “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 5
A. Companies can’t pay for the ads.
B. Users don’t stick to old Chinese brands.
C. Many people can’t stop buying these products.
D. Young people don’t trust foreign brands anymore.
( )11. The writer thinks the most important thing for the brands is to ______.

Sugar painting, as the name means, is a painting made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to admire.
In the Warring States Period (战国时代), the ancient people loved sweets and developed methods of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, there was huge progress in the technology of sugar making. And sugar, the precious product once only served to the emperors and princes, also went into common people’s homes. With the cultural and economic (经济的) development of the Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck to the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting appeared.
Sugar painting is different from normal painting. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is done.
However, it’s a pity that this folk art is dying recently. The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What’s worse, few people seem to be willing to pass on the art except those aging sugar painters.
For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting has pulled the art down into people’s daily lives. Through it, we may see the spiritual support of the ancient people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China. Therefore, the art should be remembered, missed and passed on.
( )12. When did sugar painting appear
A. In the Warring States Period. B. In the Tang Dynasty.
C. In the Yuan Dynasty. D. In the Ming Dynasty.
( )13. Why should sugar painters make the work very quickly
A. To show their excellent skills.
B. To avoid syrup becoming hard.
C. To protect the spoon and the table.
D. To reduce people’s waiting time.
( )14. What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards today’s sugar painting
according to Paragraph 4
A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Unclear.
( )15. Which can be the most suitable title for the passage
A. Exploring the Art of Sugar Painting
B. Improving the Taste of Sugar Painting
C. Effects of the Sugar Producing Technology
D. Ways to Change the Future of Sugar Painting

Many traditional woodcut prints (版画) are either black and white or simple in color, but reduction woodcuts (绝版木刻) can show rich colors.
The reduction woodcut uses one piece of wood to make a colorful artwork. The artist cuts and prints different layers (层) in order on the same piece of wood. The reduction woodcuts became an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in Pu’er, Yunnan, in 2009.
Leng Guangmian, 40, is a reduction woodcut artist. Leng started learning it in 2003. He said that making reduction woodcut prints is just like an adventure. “Every time we cut on the wood and then print, we never know what it will be like in the end. As I see beautiful patterns layer by layer, I only get more excited,” added Leng.
But finishing such work is not easy. He said that before cutting, he needs to plan for the whole print and choose colors for different layers. A big print usually takes months to finish.
Leng wants his artwork to show both great woodcutting skills and the culture and life in Pu’er. “For my works, there are two themes: Tea Horse Road (茶马古道), because Pu’er is one of the starting places of that road; and disappearing villages,” Leng said. “Many old villages in Pu’er need rebuilding, so I want to make people remember their beauty before they are gone.”
Leng Guangmian is now getting more people to know about the reduction woodcut. He trains farmers in Pu’er and brings the art into schools. To make students understand and learn the art quickly, he even thought of a new idea of cardboard printing. “By using a small cardboard and making it simpler with three to five colors, students can get the beauty of the art,” Leng said.
