In many cultures, small talk is a big deal. Although it may seem like a pointless conversation to pass the time, it is actually very important for communicating with others.
“Small talk is about digging into possibilities (可能性),” said Melisa Wadsworth, a US speaker. Having good small talk skills can help you meet new people, make friends or even find a job. Not only that, small talk can also improve one’s ability to think by making you consider what another person feels or thinks about.
Small talk is so important. How do you do it What’s the best way to break the ice and start talking to people Well, some of the most common topics include the weather, hobbies, work, family and travel. These topics are great for small talk because they are easy for people to talk about.
Another way to start small talk is to talk about things around you. For example, you can talk to your schoolmates about your teachers. If you’re at a party, you might say something about the food, music, or the number of people there. If you’re lucky, you might have a friend who will introduce you to others first to help you start a conversation.
Sometimes, it may seem a bit difficult to start a conversation with someone you don’t know. That’s OK! Everyone has this problem sometimes. Wadsworth has the best advice for this, “Approach the ‘stranger’ about a good laugh, an interesting story or a job chance.”
Small talk might just be the first step to something more important.

He made his parents believe that school was a waste of time, so he began home schooling with special teachers. He dreamed of being the youngest person to enter a university, and he sent letters to famous professors (教授) to see if it was possible.
One day, the doorbell rang. When Tom opened the door, there was his idol—Professor Rosen. Tom was so excited that he could hardly speak. The two talked for a long time, exchanging ideas. There was silence as Tom realised that he didn’t really have any friends. “Well, I don’t have time for all that. I’m too busy with my studies,” he said. “That’s a problem, Tom. You have to learn that the world is not just filled with ideas. It’s filled with people. And you have to remember to be what you are... a boy. Boys need to have fun.”

It is not very simple and you’ll need another person to help you. Experiment and learn how to use them, and I’ll be back in a week to see how you’re doing. Then, I’ll have another test for you.”

Do you want to become better at making small talk with new people Do you want to become better at networking with others Nothing will improve your networking ability and your ability to make a successful conversation with other people except your curiosity (好奇心) about them.
When you are curious about other people, you will want to discover some of the interesting ways that they are similar to you. When you are curious about them, you’ll also be interested to discover the ways in which they think differently and live differently from you.
When you have curiosity about others, you will be much less self-conscious and your conversations will work a lot better. Instead of worrying yourself, “What can I say next that won’t sound stupid ”, you will be focused on learning more about the other person.
Making small talk with strangers can be tricky. We’ve all heard the advice that we should pick something out of our immediate environment and use that as a main point to start our small talk with the other person. It’s true that this can be a great starting point for a conversation. However, when you focus too much on discussing things like the weather in your city, you can bring the conversation to a painful end very quickly. The other person will sense that you are trying to make a conversation, but that you have no interest in really getting to know him or her.
How can you keep small talk from becoming boring
One way is to watch the other person for clues they will give you about what is really interesting to them. When you get these clues, use them to start making the conversation a bit more about their life, their opinions, and their experiences.
After you have had a few minutes to break the ice, try looking for ways to make the conversation a little bit more personal. He or she might be happy to discuss his or her favorite team or musical band.
( )12. What does the writer mainly want to tell us in Paragraph 1

B. show our interests to the other person

第三部分 书面表达(共两节, 满分30 分)
第一节 阅读表达(共5 小题; 每小题2 分, 满分10 分)
阅读下面短文, 完成短文后的问题。
Politeness helps us communicate better. When we are little kids, our parents teach us to say “please” “ thank you” “excuse me” and “sorry”. Our parents know politeness is important for our development, so it’s correct for us to learn politeness so early.
For an English learner, it’s also a good idea to learn polite language expressions. Here are two pieces of advice for you.
★ Use modal verbs (情态动词)
When we use some modal verbs, like would, could or may, we can change a direct question into a polite request. For example , when we say “ Pass me the salt.”, we can say “Could you please pass me the salt ” When we say “Where is the bookstore ”, we can say “Could you please show me where the bookstore is ”
★ Change the grammar
This way may be strange but it’s true. In order to be politer, speakers often change the tense (时态). In English, the simple present tense (一般现在时) sounds too direct, so speakers change the present tense into the past tense. For example , when we say “ Do you have time tomorrow ”, we can say “I wondered if you had time tomorrow.”
These are the suggestions for the language. Polite actions are also important because they can make us feel confident (自信的) and improve our relationships with others. So let’s be polite and be a better person!
41. Why do our parents ask us to learn politeness so early
_________________________________________________________________
42. How do speakers change the present tense to show the politeness

43. What does the picture want to tell us

Everybody wants to make friends with people who always help others. Finally, try to find someone who has the same interest. If you have the same hobbies, you will have more to talk about. Then you will be friends soon.
The above are my suggestions for you. I really hope you will get on well with your classmates and live a happy school life.
