Do you know that cigarette butts (烟头) are the most common rubbish in our life People throw about 4.5 trillion (万亿) of them into the environment every year. Cigarette butts can kill fish, and they are in the stomachs (胃) of sea turtles, birds and other wildlife. A survey showed that though cigarette butts were everywhere, people paid no attention (注意) to them because they were so small.
But now, Dutch company Tech Tics is planning to help solve the cigarette problem with its Beach Bot (BB). It is a beach-cleaning robot. It uses AI to find cigarette butts on the beach. Even part of the butt in the sand can be found. BB has four wheels, two cameras and two arms to pick up cigarette butts. The way this robot works is very simple. Once it finds cigarette butts, BB just needs to put them into a bin (垃圾箱). After it finishes cleaning, people will deal with (处理) the waste.
However, BB still can’t tell the difference between things like a cigarette butt and a small seashell (贝壳). We can use the APP Microsoft Trove to help it. Anyone with a smart phone can send BB photos of cigarette butts to help the robot learn to know them.
BB is able to pick up 20 cigarette butts successfully in 30 minutes now. Though the robot works well without wasting time, scientists still hope that people can litter less. If people stop throwing their cigarette butts onto the beach, robots like BB will not be necessary.

The role of teachers
What will the role of teachers be in this robotic classroom of the future Many teachers worry that AI will take their jobs. In fact, human teachers will always be needed to manage (管理) the classroom. And they can encourage students and help them study better. A large part of education for children is teaching them social-emotional (人际情感的) skills. But AI programs can only teach students to learn subjects, to read and solve math problems. They are not able to teach them social-emotional skills.
Classrooms
With the help of AI, students can finish some tasks more quickly and easily. In the future, AI might even be able to tell if students are having problems with a study based on their facial expressions (面部表情). AI can also help people with hearing problems or people who are unable to speak the local (当地的) language.

When the air is polluted we wear masks to protect our lungs (肺). What about bees and butterflies They can’t wear masks.
New Scientist magazine recently reported findings from James Ryalls and his team at the University of Reading, UK. Their study found that air pollution is harmful to pollinators (传花粉者) like bees and butterflies. They can’t smell flowers because of the pollution.
Pollinators are important. They spread pollen (花粉) among plants with flowers. This helps the flower produce seed and fruit. Without pollinators, farms cannot make food.
To do their study, Ryalls’ team built eight areas. They piped (吹送) some harmful gases into six of these areas. The other two areas had normal air.
“The results were much more severe than we thought,” said Ryalls. The levels of pollution in their tests were similar to “normal road traffic”. In such conditions (环境条件), 70 percent few pollinators fly into the area. Once they were there, they didn’t hang around. Visits to flowers decreased by up to 90 percent.
Scientists explained that harmful gases can break down the scents (气味) of flowers. This makes it hard for pollinators to find their food. Shanno n Olsson, a scientist in the India, pointed out that the new “legal” and “safe” pollution levels keep pollinators away.
“Air pollution is another stress on pollinators,” said Ryalls. “That causes their number to decline (减少).”

Marianne started Cricket (蟋蟀) magazine in 1973. She believed that “only the best of the best is good enough for the young.” In Cricket, children would find wonderful stories with beautiful art. Marianne looked for best stories from all over the world. She knew that children were filled with fun, and she wanted Cricket to be “humor from the heart that makes you laugh out loud”.
Why did Marianne name her magazine Cricket One night, she was reading a singer’s memoir (回忆录) A Day of Pleasure about his childhood. In it he wrote, “There was a stove in the apartment behind which there lived a cricket. It chirped the nights through all winter long. I imagined the cricket was telling a story that would never end.” That’s exactly what Marianne wanted her children’s magazine to do—to tell stories that would never end! Dear Ralph,
We got a new foreign teacher this semester. He is funny, outgoing and helpful. The only problem is that he does not know how to teach. He always treats us like kids, teaching us things that we find childish. We have tried to talk to him about the problem, but he doesn’t change. What should we do
Dear Frank,
You’ve already done well by talking to your teacher about the changes you want. You could go a step further by telling the methods (方法) you want. For example, ask the teacher to use a certain (某一个) textbook or to focus his classes on a certain topic. If your teacher is as friendly as you say, he will accept your advice and thank you for helping him. If you do not give the teacher explicit (明确的) advice, I am afraid your classes will not improve.
Although I don’t know your teacher’s background, many foreign teachers in China lack professional teaching experience. They just use their instincts (直觉) to teach. Artificial intelligence (AI) can now do amazing things. ChatGPT is an AI that can answer questions, tell stories, and do much more. But it’s very “thirsty”, said a new study.
When ChatGPT works, its “home”—data (数据) centers around the world—gets very hot. Workers then have to use water to cool them down. Cold water goes into pipes (管道) near the computers at these centers. Because the computers are very hot, the water turns into vapor (水蒸气) and goes into the air. The water needs to be super (超级的) clean. If they use seawater, it can eat away the pipes.
If you ask ChatGPT 20 to 50 questions, it needs to “drink” a 500-milliliter bottle of water. When people trained ChatGPT, it used 700,000 liters of water, said the study. This is the amount that is needed to make about 370 cars.
ChatGPT is not the only one that needs data centers. Everything you do on the internet needs data centers to work. There are more than 8,000 data centers in the world, said a report in 2021. The number is still growing. If AI keeps using a lot of water, we may have to “fight” with Al for water.

B.ChatGPT needs water while working.
C.ChatGPT keeps learning to answer questions.

Three people were sitting around a table in a restaurant in Brazil. How much do you think each of them tipped (给小费)
The Briton asked, “It’s common to tip 10 percent, right ”
The American woman cried, “Oh, I was planning to leave 20 percent!”
The Chinese woman asked, “What’s a tip ”
Although it is not a tradition to tip in China, tipping is a big deal in the United States. There, it is common to tip about 15 to 20 percent of the bill.
Usually, people give tips to a waiter or waitress when they eat in a restaurant. The US tops the list of tipping—waiters and waitresses are expecting to get 15—25 percent of the bill. So if you order $100 in food, you are expected to pay your waiter at least $15, making your payment $115 in all.
Why is this Many waiters and waitresses get paid below the US minimum wage (最低工资), and tips make up for that. Some states pay their servers only $2.13 per hour.
It is not just for waiters, either. Hotel workers, hairdressers and taxi drivers also expect tips.
Tipping is also popular in some Southeast Asian countries, like Indonesia and Thailand. However, in Japan there is a no-tipping culture. If you try to give a waiter or waitress money, you may actually upset him or her.

131.Which country does not have a culture of tipping
