We all enjoy the colors of autumn leaves. Did you ever wonder how and why a leaf changes color Where do the yellows and oranges come from To answer those questions, we first have to understand what leaves are and what they do.
Leaves are the world's food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots and take CO2 from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and CO2 into glucose (葡萄糖) , a kind of sugar. Plants use it as food for energy and growing.
A chemical called"chlorophyll(叶绿素)"in the leaves gives plants their green color. As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter, and trees"know"it's time to begin getting ready for winter.
During winter, there is not enough sunlight or water. Trees rest during this time and live on the food they store during the summer. They begin to shut down their foodmaking factories. As the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves, we begin to see yellow and orange leaves.
The bright reds and purples we see in leaves are made mostly in autumn. In some trees, like maples(枫树), sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn the glucose in the leaves into a red color. And we can enjoy the beautiful red leaves during autumn.

asked the student to walk through the chocolate factory next to their school and pick out the biggest chocolate bar he could find. But there was a rule: as he passed through the factory, he could not turn back.
The student went to the chocolate factory. As he walked, he saw a large chocolate bar. He liked it, but he thought he could find an even bigger one if he kept going.
He kept walking and saw another chocolate bar. This one was a little bigger. But again, he thought he could find an even bigger one if he kept going. As he got to the end of the factory, he saw fewer chocolate bars, and none of them were as large as the earlier ones. He felt it was a pity to keep going. Finally, he gave up. He went back to his teacher empty-handed and explained what happened.
The teacher told him, “You liked the first chocolate bar, but you kept looking for a bigger one. We all have those moments when bright ideas hit us, but not everyone can develop such moments into the fruits of creative thinking. While we believe creative thinking is the falling apple of Isaac Newton, one of the greatest scientists, we hardly notice that creative thinking is in fact a
process.
Let's look at what happened in 1666. Sitting in the garden, Newton watched an apple fall from a tree. He began to wonder if the same force that pulled the apple down also kept the moon circling (环绕) the earth.
Newton believed it did. He called it“gravity(重力)”.
This story has become one of the most popular examples of“cureka” moments. But when we cheer for the great discovery, we shouldn't forget the whole process of creative thinking.
Newton studied math for long to have a better understanding of the world. He always enjoyed finding new ways to solve problems. The falling apple was only the fruit of years of hard work before. It also started the train of thought that continued for the next twenty years.
Newton began to examine“gravity” carefully. He experimented. Then he studied the results and used what he learned to do new experiments. In 1687, the greatest scientific work ever came out.
The whole process of creative thinking works the same in our daily life.
In school, we prepare ourselves for the right moment. Once the moment comes, we will catch it and then keep on working in the years to come. It takes much to get the fruits of creative thinking, but the sweetest fruits will be ready for those who wait the longest.
47. Why could Isaac Newton discover the “gravity”
A. Because he studied math for a long time.
B. Because a falling apple from the tree hit him.
C. Because he enjoyed finding new ways to solve problems.
D. Because he prepared a lot before and went or thinking after.
48. How does the writer mainly develop the passage
A. By asking questions.
B. By giving examples.
C. By listing numbers.
D. By explaining differences.
49. Which of the following statement about Newton is TRUE
A. In order to find the gravity, he studied math.
B. He seldom used what he learned to examine gravity.
C. In 1687, he began to write his greatest scientific work.
D. In 1666, he thought gravity kept the moon circling the earth.
50. What does the passage mainly tell us
A. Careful watching makes really great work.
B. Catching the right moment is the key to the success.
C. Creative thinking is to those who are well-prepared.
D. Every bright idea can be developed into creative thinking.
