Have you heard of the Mandela Effect It describes a situation where many people have the same false memory.
The name of the theory (理论) dates back to 2010 when many people on the internet falsely remembered that Nelson Mandela died in the 1980s in prison. But Mandela was actually freed in 1990 and passed away in 2013. Then a US researcher created the term Mandela Effect based on this situation.
There are many other examples of the Mandela Effect. In 2022 in China, there was a heated discussion online about the sentence by Mencius: “Thus when Heaven is about to confer a great office on any man…” (“故天将降大任于斯/是人也”) . Most people remembered it was “si”, while others say it was “shi”. Later, People’s Education Press ended the discussion by saying that all its textbooks say shi What do you remember it as
Psychologists (心理学家) say there are some reasons for the Mandela Effect. For example, your mind may try to fill in missing gaps in your memory to make more sense of it, which is called confabulation (虚构症). However, this is not lying, but remembering details that never happened.
The Internet may be another reason for the Mandela Effect, as the news we read can be false from the beginning. In 2018, a study of over 100,000 news stories showed that false news can spread faster and reach more people than the truth. As a powerful way to spread information, the Internet might be the main reason for false information to enter our minds these days.
36. What does the Mandela Effect have to do with Nelson Mandela
A. Nelson Mandela created the term (术语).
B. The term was created to remember Nelson Mandela’s death.
C The term came from an event about Nelson Mandela.
37. What is the Mandela Effect
A. It’s a situation where many people remember something wrong.
B. It’s a situation where people hide the truth by telling lies.
C. It’s about the different memories of different people on one thing.
38. What’s the truth in the case of “si” and “shi”
A. “Shi” and “si” are both correct.
B. “Shi” is the correct one.
C. “Si” was wrongly used for a short period.
39. According to psychologists, the Mandela Effect probably happens when ______.
A. we pay too much attention to details
B. we tell a lie about something
C. we get wrong information online
40. What’s the structure of the story
A. B. C.

____76____ Underwater robots are expensive, they often move slowly, and they can’t go everywhere. So scientists came up with a good idea—tying cameras to sea lions. The sea lions could cover large areas of the seafloor quickly, and go deep into places that humans can’t reach.
The scientists chose 8 healthy adult females (雌性动物) from two different groups of sea lions. They chose females because they would soon return to land to feed their young. ____77____
The scientists put the sea lions to sleep and tied a light-weight camera and GPS tracker (追踪器) to each of them. The team worked with animal experts to make sure the sea lions were treated well. Before long, the sea lions woke up and headed out to sea.

Using AI and the information from the videos the scientists developed a special tool. ____79____ And it’s correct 98% of the time. The scientists now can use that tool to make good predictions about what the seafloor is like, even in areas that haven’t been studied.
Thanks to the sea lions, the scientists now have a better idea about the kinds of areas used by these endangered animals and where these areas can be found. As one of the 9 researchers said, “____80____”
A. The results were exciting.
B. But studying the seafloor is difficult.
C. This tool can “guess” what the seafloor is like.

How old were you when you started using social media (社交媒体) Later this year, children below a certain age in Australia will be banned (禁止) from social media. While the specific age has not been decided, it is likely to be between 14 and 16.
A recent survey of 20, 000 Australian students in the 10th grade showed because of social media, students have poorer life quality. Also, nearly 60 percent of parents are worried about social media hurting their children’s mental health (心理健康).
The Australian government believes that the ban is good for teenagers’ well-being. “We want them to have real experiences with real people because we know that social media is causing social harm,” one of the officials said.
However, experts have doubts about the ban. Lisa Given, a professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, wrote in The Conversation that many European countries have tried similar ways before but didn’t succeed. This is because the policy limits teenagers’ chances to get information and express themselves online.
Meanwhile as Laura Markley, a doctor at a Children’s Hospital in the US pointed out, social media can “create a sense of connection and belonging (归属感)” for children of similar age and help them feel less lonely.
On the technical (技术的) side, the law will also be difficult to carry out. For example, many apps now ask users their age. But users can simply lie and put in an earlier date. What’s more, the law may push teenagers to hide their online activities, or even use apps that are unsafe or badly managed.
So, what is the right way forward Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, says that simply banning social media won’t solve the problem. It’s better for the government to provide more tools for parents.
Limiting Social Media
The background Australia will ban students below a certain age from using the social media.
The ____81____ of social media ● Social media can ____82____ poorer life quality. ● Social media may hurt children’s mental health.

Changes about Chinese Spring Festival
Chinese people have been celebrating the Spring Festival for centuries. In the past, we used to set off fireworks and watch the Spring Festival Gala on TV. But now, things are different. We don’t set off fireworks much anymore because we want to protect the environment. Instead, we play games on our phones and chat with our family and friends online.
The food we eat during the Spring Festival has also changed. We still eat dumplings and fish, which are symbols of good luck, but we also try different kinds of food from all over the world.
I think these changes show how our lives are getting better and more colorful. Even though some old ways are gone, I like the new ways because they make the Spring Festival more fun and interesting. It’s a time to remember our traditions and also to enjoy the new things that come with the modern world.
