What slows you down when you read Many people read word by word. They pronounce the words as they read. This slows them down. It makes reading boring and difficult. If you find that you do this, make your eyes move faster over the page. Train them to see phrases instead of single words. By doing this, you will be reading the words faster than you can pronounce them.
Your reading speed will improve along with your concentration(集中注意力). Do you find yourself daydreaming as you read If so, you’re not alone. This happens to many people. You need to curb this habit. As you read, make a mark on a piece of paper when you find your mind starting to wander(漫游). This will bring you back into focus. As you finish reading the passage, notice how many marks you made on the paper. Set a goal to reduce this number the next time you read.
Make sure you know your purpose of reading before you begin. Will you be tested on the material If so, what will you have to know Will you be asked on the main ideas and details(细节) Knowing your purpose will help you know whether to skim it or read it slowly and carefully.
Make reading a habit. Believe in yourself—you can do it!

One day, I heard an American boy 21 to a Chinese girl student, “You speak very good English.” But the girl answered, “ No, no. My English is very poor.” The foreigner was quite 22 at the answer. Thinking he had not made 23 understood or the girl had not heard him clearly, he said, “Yes, indeed, you speak very well.” 24 the girl still kept saying, “No.” In the end the American boy could not understand and didn’t know 25 _to say.
What’s wrong with the girl’s answer She didn’t 26 a compliment(恭维) in the same
way as the American people do. She should answer, “Thank you” instead of “No”. She 27 understood what the American boy had said, but she thought she should be 28 . In
the 29 , people will feel proud and confident when they are praised. So if someone says the 30 you have cooked are very delicious, you should say, “Thank you.”
In our country we think being modest is a virtue(美德) and being proud is a bad thing, but in my opinion, being confident does not 31 being proud,so sometimes you should be confident 32 being modest. If you are modest and say, “No, I’m afraid I can’t do it well,” while working in a western country, the others may think that you really cannot do it. If you often say “No” , you will certainly be looked 33 upon by others. When asking for a job, if one says something like “ Yes, I can certainly do it” instead of “Let me have a try” , he or she will 34 get it. So in the west, you should be 35 to show your self-confidence.

Our course is almost over, and it has been wonderful. Our teachers 46 taught us so much about the animals here, especially pandas, and my classmates are also super nice.
I sent you 47 photo from the trip. My friend Nancy is on my left, and the woman beside us is named Janet. I think you two would really like her. She left the UK in her 20s and helped open this park in Sichuan. She’s also a scientist and studies the animals here. I’ve learned a lot 48 her and her husband Bill.
The park is breathtaking. 49 are tall trees everywhere. I’ve never been to such a special place before. As you can see in the photo, though, it rains a lot here. Even with our raincoats, we got very wet. Still, I really think this was the best part of my summer abroad course. I would love 50 come back to China in the future.
Love,
Katherine
