What is your first impression of bamboo in China Is it only a kind of plant on the food list of
pandas No! It also represents single bamboo drifting(独竹漂), an intangible cultural heritage passed
from generation to generation among the people in Guizhou Province.
Single bamboo drifting has been performed for more than 2,000 years. In the past, the ancestors
who lived on the bank of the Chishui River used it as a method to go across the river. Now, with the
development of modern society, this skill has been regarded as a sport or a unique way of performance
by local people.
Middle school students of the province practice the sport and compete in the Chinese National
Games. The requirements of the sport are simple, yet demanding! Athletes have to balance on a
bamboo pole, barely as wide as one’s foot, and guide it down the river with a thin stick. But there’s
more than just guiding. While keeping balance on the narrow bamboo pole with the thin stick, the
athletes are performing skills and tricks. Jumping, push-ups, and splits(劈叉)are some of the most
common ones, whereas those who are more experienced often use their imagination to try out more
difficult moves.
Yang Liu, a 25-year-old “water fairy” from Zunyi, Guizhou, dancing on the river in traditional
Chinese costume, is an inheritor of single bamboo drifting. For over ten years, combining drifting with
dancing, Yang has put fresh energy into this traditional art. It’s not easy to stand, let alone dance on a
single bamboo. So not surprisingly, Yang has experienced countless falls and failures. Thanks to her
efforts, though, single bamboo drifting has gotten great fame on the Internet and become well-known
in the world.

It was reported in May 2024 that the China Wildlife Conservation(保护)
Association will send giant pandas Yun Chuan and Xin Bao to the San Diego Zoo
in the United States, which is a symbol of a new 10-year period of international
conservation partnership. The CWCA has organized experienced caretakers and

research cooperation. Over the past twenty years, the two sides have cooperated and solved many
technical problems, including important discoveries in key areas like panda raising.

and reintroduction to the wild, has achieved good results. Giant pandas will facilitate communication
between peoples and let people around the world know China better,” said Li, the leader of the China
Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda.

panda exchanges, allowing more people to understand giant pandas, which provides very good support

A garden for wildlife in your backyard doesn’t have to be a jungle of untidy plant life. It can and
should be a quiet shelter(庇护所) for you and animals. In fact, you don’t need a great deal of space
to create a wildlife garden. 41 Use what you have and build from there. A successful garden
for wildlife is built on four aspects: shelter and protection, food sources(来源), water sources and
nesting areas.
42 As you create a wildlife garden, keep this in mind. Your goal should be a pleasing
mix of evergreen and deciduous trees and bushes. Plants that make your winter garden beautiful will
also provide shelter and protection.
Bird feeders are a must for any garden for wildlife. Try making your own! Take into account that
different birds feed at different levels and eat different kinds of seed, fruit and fats. Try to choose as
many local varieties as possible. 43 Also, look for plants that produce berries to serve as a food
source in fall and winter.
All animals need water to survive. An easy way to ensure the arrival of wildlife is to provide a
clean water source. The traditional birdbath is fine, but placing a bowl at ground level will give some
other creatures(生物)a chance. The low, boggy spot in the yard may be the perfect spot to dig out
a pond for fish, frogs and birds. 44
As you create a wildlife garden, plan for nesting areas. A few bird boxes around the yard can be
an invitation to the surrounding bird population. 45 Nesting birds are territorial and won’t
nest too close to their neighbors.
