Folk art is a kind of art. It is usually made by people in a place for a long time. It shows what the people of the place find important or interesting. Folk artists often make things that people used in their everyday life, like kites or dishes.
A form of folk art from the country of Russia is the nesting doll, or the matryoshka doll. The word “matryoshka” means “mother” in Russian. People in Russia began to make these dolls a little more than 100 years ago. They learnt about nesting dolls from folk artists in Japan, who had learnt about them from folk artists in China. Chinese artists began making nesting boxes about a thousand years ago. Later, Japanese began making nesting dolls.
The dolls usually have round heads and long bodies without hands, but people can paint hands on if they want. Usually there are five dolls in a set, but some sets have twelve or more dolls. In a set of nesting dolls, each one is smaller or bigger than the others. In each doll, except the smallest one, you can find a smaller doll inside. The smallest doll is often made of a piece of wood.
Nesting dolls have a special meaning. The biggest doll is called “mother”, which means an important woman who is the head of the Russian family. The smaller dolls inside the biggest one are its children. That’s to say, the mother gives birth to lots of children. So, nesting dolls mean fertility.

Most people have probably seen a movie about an AI (人工智能) tool or a robot (机器人) that has become so smart that it can control the world. At present, there are no such AI tools or robots. But scientists have been working to improve AI models. Some recent models can create realistic photos from a short written description. Others can recreate anyone’s voice based on a voice recording just a few seconds long.
The AI tool that has got the most attention recently is ChatGPT, created by the company OpenAI. When asked a question, ChatGPT answers quickly in perfect sentences. It can make up stories and games, write articles, program computers, and much more. ChatGPT appears to be very intelligent (智能的). But in fact, ChatGPT is simply guessing—based on its training information—which word is most likely to come next, over and over again.
In March, OpenAI developed a more powerful model, called GPT-4. GPT-4 can create and explain jokes, and pass tests that are difficult for humans. The rapid progress of recent AI models worries some people. In late March, many computer experts (专家) wrote a letter calling for a six-month pause (暂停) for any work on AI tools.
The letter says AI companies race to create smart AI tools that no one can “understand, predict, or...control”. The group behind the letter wants governments to develop laws to make sure AI tools are safe.
ChatGPT has caused so much excitement that many companies are likely to keep developing smart AI tools. But the letter has sent a strong warning that many people, including leaders will be thinking about carefully.
18.What can we know from the first paragraph
A.AI models are becoming intelligent.
B.Scientists get new ideas from movies.
C.Robots will not control the world in the future.

20.Why did many computer experts write the letter
A.They advised people not to use ChatGPT.
B.They wanted to explain why GPT-4 was much safer.
C.They hoped AI companies could solve real-life problems.
D.They warned leaders that AI tools would become dangerous.
21.Which of the following is TRUE .
A.GPT-4 can do any work instead of humans.
B.Computer experts think ChatGPT is good enough.
C.AI companies are racing to develop smart AI tools.
D.Scientists are working to create AI tools bigger than GPT-4.

I looked down at my shoes as people filled the train, and then I saw her. She looked a little tired and pale. As I watched the woman, I thought about the letters my mother wrote and how she must have known an ordinary piece of paper turns into a love letter when a person puts herself into it. Then I remembered the notebook in my bag. I would write the woman a note and give it to her as I exited the train, I decided. I pulled the notebook out of my bag and began writing a letter.
When I looked up, the woman was gone. I left the letter in my notebook, unsure of what to do with it now that she would never know that it was meant for her.
After I wrote that letter, more letters to other people I observed came marching out of me, one by one, until soon I had filled up the notebook.
Back on the train, just a few days later, the plan became clear. I was going to leave the letter I wrote to the woman on the subway for someone else to find. Then I would spread other love letters all over New York City. And once I had set each one in its place, I would write even more.
I tried to form a picture in my mind of what would make me pick up a letter if I found it on a random (任意的) subway train or in a coffee shop thinking it might have been for me all along. I settled on something simple: If you find this letter then it’s for you. I wrote those words on my first letter. I folded the letter and placed it behind me. When I got to my stop, I planned to let the letter slip down onto the seat as I walked away.
At Grand Cantral Terminal, I waited for the subway doors to open and then stood up as quickly as possible. Rushing through the doors, I kept running faster and faster once my feet hit the platform. I was more nervous when I got farther away from the train, disappearing into the city.
During the fall of 2010, I kept leaving letters. In the months that followed, I started my own site, , about my project, inspiring others to write and leave letters in their own communities. Now the website connects strangers in need of love letters and those who want to write them.
About a year later, a woman wrote to me about her friend Briana, a single mother struggling to pay the rent. I typed out Briana’s story and published it on the website. A week later, I walked away from the post office with a lot of mail and a big idea about human beings: mainly that if you give them something to do, a task, they will show up. At the end of that month, I mailed letters off to Briana.
Then, I got a thank-you e-mail from Briana’s friend. “They show you’re not alone and that you’re not struggling for nothing,” she wrote.
About all stories, I will always go back to Matt’s from Ohio. He e-mailed me about two years ago. Matt told me he was getting older. His family and he were disconnected. He didn’t have many friends. He was starting to believe he’d leave nothing behind and he’d be forgotten.
The message was sent with no return address. There was no way to write back to him, but I hope he reads these words:
Matt, I want you to know: You were wrong to think you’d be forgotten. And I was wrong to think people couldn’t walk into our lives and change our histories immediately. Because you did that for me.
22.Why did the author decide to write the strange woman a note
A.Her mother reminded her to do that.
B.She preferred to write rather than speak.
C.She was going to show love to the woman.
D.Her mother wanted to offer her some help.
23.The author started her own site in order to ________.
A.call on more people to care for others
B.provide people a chance to write letters.
C.connect strangers with people writing letters
D.show people the importance of her project
24.From the words to Matt, we can learn that ________.
A.it’s easy for people to walk into our lives quickly
B.the author was influenced by Matt in some ways
C.the author’s relatives and friends also forgot him
D.Matt was always connected with his family and friends
25.What can we infer from the passage
A.Matt has a good relationship with his family and friends again.
B.A number of people are willing to make a difference to others.
C.The woman the author met on the train received the letter at last.
D.People came to Briana’s aid with a generous donation in the end.

请认真阅读下面短文,用英语回答短文后的问题。
Mark Twain once said that everyone talks about the weather, but no one ever does anything about it. This was true in his day. But it may not be the case in today’s world. In fact, humans have found many different ways to control the weather.
Cloud seeding(云催化)is a kind of technology that can control rain. It is done by spreading chemicals(化学物质)like dry ice or silver iodide(碘化银)inside of clouds, either by rocket or airplane. This changes the amount of water inside the cloud, which helps to control the amount of rain, the time when it rains and even where it rains.
This technology has helped to solve droughts(干旱). It has also played a key role during important events. For example, China used cloud seeding in Beijing just before the 2008 Olympic Games in order to stop rain from falling during the event.
However, scientists are still debating(辩论)how to use this technology. On one hand, it is believed that it might have side effects(副作用). For example, silver iodide may be bad for the environment. On the other hand, no two clouds are the same so every new experiment introduces new conditions.
In addition to controlling rain, scientists have also tried to find ways to weaken storms and hurricanes(飓风). Scientists at the US National Hurricane Centre Headquarters think it might be possible to control hurricanes by using lasers(激光). Others believe that burning petroleum(石油)in a hurricane’s path could slow the storms down.
54.What is Cloud seeding
55.Why are scientists still debating how to use Cloud Seeding
56.Do you think humans should control the weather Why or why not

A.They advised people not to use ChatGPT.
B.They wanted to explain why GPT-4 was much safer.
C.They hoped AI companies could solve real-life problems.
D.They warned leaders that AI tools would become dangerous.
21.Which of the following is TRUE .
