Like many people, I have no clear idea about heroes. At some points, we all wonder if we need a hero and what a hero really is.
Although there are a lot of differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics (特征) which give us courage and make us want to learn from them.
A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a special story to tell and people respect him a lot. But a hero is not just the person with great fame (名誉).
A hero has larger power than ordinary people. Some people want to live like a hero, and they have to experience a life with newer and further meaning. If we want to know whether a person is a hero, it depends on what he wants to live for and die for. If the answer is that he lives for and dies for only his own fame, he may be a famous person but not a hero.
A hero has vision from the mountain top. He has the ability to think about or plan the future with his great and clever brain. Also, he is able to develop or even change the society and create new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of Britain. Without Martin Luther King Jr., Americans might still take different buses, eat in different restaurants, go for walks in different parks, and shop in different stores because of the different colors of their skins.
There might be changes in society without no heroes, but the speed of change would be low. Thanks to the heroes in history, the society has developed so rapidly.
20.If you want to live like a hero, you should ________.
A. know who you want to live with
B. experience a new and meaningful life
C. serve your own fame and try to be famous
D. listen to something worth talking about
21.The Chinese meaning of “vision” in the fifth paragraph is ________.

C. People get power from heroes to move to a new place.

23.What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To help people understand what a hero is.
B. To tell people how to become a hero.
C. To introduce some famous heroes in history.
D. To describe the importance of heroes.

Every American family has its own traditions on Thanksgiving Day, and mine is no difference. Once the national holiday arrives, my mom rises early to make the meal. She puts a turkey in the oven, chops carrots and bakes pies. I’m sorry to say that the men in my family— my dad, my younger brother and myself— seldom offer help. Our job is to wash a mountain of dirty dishes after the meal is over.
At around 2 p. m. every Thanksgiving Day, family members seat themselves around the kitchen table. Plates of turkey, vegetables, salad, rolls and pies cover it. At this point, we can hardly keep ourselves from drooling (流口水) all over our fancy clothes, but it’s not yet time to eat.
First, we must bow our heads, close our eyes and say a prayer (祷告) of thanks aloud to God for giving us everything we have. Under normal situations, I would have no problems making a list of things I am thankful for. I grew up in a loving family. My parents, who aren’t wealthy, took out loans to help me pay for university. However, the funny thing is, every time I sit down for Thanksgiving dinner and try to say a prayer of thanks, my mind usually goes blank. I think it has something to do with my growling (咕咕叫) stomach and all of that food sitting right there under my nose.
Eventually, though, we all finish our short prayers and dig in. To be sure, the day includes other highlights— visiting with family and watching football. But usually at around 6 p. m., we are all stuffed ourselves like turkeys and thankful to have a nice warm bed to sleep in.
24.What does the passage mainly talk about
A. It tells what the family eat on Thanksgiving Day.
B. It tells how the family spends Thanksgiving Day.
C. It introduces foods served on Thanksgiving Day.

A. watching a movie B. making visits
C. having a big meal D. watching football
26.Why does the author’s mind usually “go blank” when saying a prayer of thanks
A. Because he is too thankful to say a word.
B. Because his mind is on the food before him.
C. Because he feels too excited to speak.
D. Because he is too shy to speak in public.
27.What can we infer from the passage
A. On Thanksgiving Day, men do nothing but eat.
B. The author is a middle school student.
C. The author’s family is not rich, but it’s a loving one.
D. Thanksgiving Day falls on Thursday of December.
