It seems that self-help books are topping best-seller lists more often these days. More people are turning to self-help books for advice on how to live their lives. Last year, sales of these books in the UK rose 20 percent, reaching a record high of 3 million, The Guardian reported.
Many of the self-help books are written by famous people or psychologists (心理学家). They teach you how to deal with problems in your life – for example, how to get along with your classmates or coworkers, how to manage your time well and how to find happiness in daily life.
But can these books really help us with our lives People have lots of different opinions about this.
Julie Hall from London is a big fan of self-help books. After reading more than 300 of them, she set up her own self-help website. Her site helps women succeed in the business world. “They can give you the courage (勇气) and motivation (动力) to do whatever you want to do,” she told the Independent.
However, recent research by the University of Montreal in Canada might not agree with that.
Researchers surveyed two groups of people - one of the groups had read many self-help books, while the other hadn’t. They found that people in the first group were more stressed out and depressed (沮丧的).

People know animals have feelings, but they are not sure if (是否) these feelings are correctly understood(被理解). In recent years, scientists (科学家) have done research (研究) about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ▲ It says that humans (人) can tell if a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, like rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and made fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn't food, the chickens made low and long noises to show disappointment(失望). The researchers recorded (记录) all these sounds and studied their sound waves(声波).
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent (百分之...) of the volunteers correctly understood if the chickens were feeling happy, and even some of them never took care of chickens before.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about (导致) new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working an a smart computer program(程序). I am sure my dream will come true.
