In October, I told the eight-year-olds in the class I teach about my plan. “I'd like you to do extra jobs around the house to earn some money,” I said. “Then we'll buy food for someone who might not have a nice dinner.”
Early in the week for that donation, the children arrived with their hard-earned money. They had cleaned yards, set tables, and done the dishes. They couldn't wait to go shopping. I watched as they rushed in the supermarket aisles(过道). At last we headed toward the checkout, pushing a cart filled with food. Then Kristine cried, “Flowers!” The group rushed toward the plants.
“You can't eat flowers,” I responded. “Why not use the money to buy more food ” “But Mrs Sherlock,” she begged. “We want flowers.”
Defeated, I looked at the flowers. Stuck in the middle of the display was a pot of purple flowers. “She'll like this one,” the children agreed, and put the purple plant into the cart.
An agency had given us the address of a needy grandmother. Soon we pulled up in front of a small house. The children hurried to get the food. When Amy put the flowers on the counter, the woman seemed surprised. “Do you like it ” Michael asked. The old lady brightened. She told the children about the animals that lived close by.
We returned to the car. As we fastened our seatbelts, we could see the kitchen window. The woman inside waved goodbye, then turned and walked across the room, straight to the flowers. She put her face in them. When she raised her head, there was a smile on her lips.
The children were quiet. In that brief moment, they had seen the power they possessed to make another's life better. Sometimes a person just needs a pot of flowers on a dark November day.

Nowadays, more stores and restaurants are not accepting cash as a means of payment. Instead, customers must pay with a credit card, or by smartphone apps.
Many business owners say that being cashless has helped them streamline the way their businesses run. Staff members don't have to think about having enough money in the cash register to give change or taking bills and coins to the bank.
However, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, more than 8 million households in the United States don't have bank accounts. Also, many people, including kids, don't meet the requirements for a credit card.
“A cashless economy is not an inclusive economy. There are consumers who can't get a credit card because of low income. When stores refuse to accept cash, they exclude low-income or homeless people,” says Tazra Mitchell, policy director at the DC Fiscal Policy Institute.
Plus people who do have credit cards might prefer to pay in cash. “Cash is used by almost eight in ten people in the US every month. That's more than the percentage of any other payment type,” says Nick Bourke, director of the Pew Charitable Trusts' consumer finance project.
Lawmakers in several places have taken steps to ban cashless stores. A handful of major cities—including New York City and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania—have already passed laws to address the problem. In San Francisco, California, a law banning cashless stores was passed last May. It says most stores in the city must allow customers to pay in cash. Derek Remski helped make the San Francisco law. Remski says, “It's about understanding that not everyone has equal access to things.”
28.What does the underlined word “streamline” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Record. B.Simplify. C.Redevelop. D.Understand.
29.What does Tazra Mitchell think of a cashless economy
A.It is unfair to some people.
B.It is enjoyed by bank workers.
C.It is advantageous to customers.
D.It is the result of the marketplace.
30.What can we learn from paragraph 5
A.Cashless stores will be driven out of the market.
B.Stores should allow more than one payment type.
C.Paying with credit cards has its own disadvantages.
D.Cash payment is still very popular with consumers.
31.What is some cities' attitude towards going cashless
A.They fight it.
B.They encourage it.
C.They care little about it.
D.They are hopeful about it.

A night at the movies is always a good idea. But when you leave the theatre and realize you just dropped $45 on a ticket and some snacks, you'll wish you had been patient enough to wait until the movie came out on Netflix. The average movie ticket price in the United States in 2000 was $5.39; now, a ticket is over $9.
The main reason why movie tickets have got so expensive is because of inflation(通货膨胀). It was actually more expensive to go to the movies in the 70s than it is now. A ticket in 1978 cost $2.34. If you enter that into an inflation calculator, the same ticket will cost you $9.46 today. According to the National Association of Theatre Owners, the average cost of a ticket today is $9.11.
Another reason why you need to spend some of your life savings on seeing a movie on the big screen is that theatres are competing with streaming services that produce their own films, such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. And let's be honest, sitting at home on your sofa or bed is more comfortable than sitting in a cold theatre.
Because of streaming technology, theatres have to do something to bring in customers. Attractions—including alcohol, reclining seats(躺椅), surround sound, and 3-D movies—are all examples of that. And those upgrades come at a price, leading to more expensive tickets.
“There's all that extra cost, and it's really important for theatre owners and companies to make that experience as enjoyable as possible,” Patrick Corcoran, vice president of the National Association of Theatre Owners told Marketplace. “Because you're offering a superb experience—audience expectations are for the latest and greatest technology. Audiences are willing to pay more for a particular experience.”
32.According to the passage, what makes movie tickets so expensive
A.The viewers are wealthier than before.
B.The movie theatres offer popcorn and alcohol for free.
C.Inflation has made the ticket price appear higher than before.
D.The popular movies with famous stars deserve the high price.
33.What can we learn from the passage
A.Netflix is always a better choice for movie viewers than theatres.
B.The viewers actually pay more for the upgrades of the movie theatres.
C.The theatre owners and companies update the theatres to make them popular.
D.With comfortable seats, theatres are more attractive than streaming services.
34.Which of the following would Patrick Corcoran most probably agree with
A.The high price of a movie ticket is supposed to agree with a wonderful experience.
B.It's unwise for viewers to pay so much to watch a movie in the theatre.
C.It's a waste of money providing the latest technology in the theatre.
D.The viewers would prefer to sit at home on the sofa or bed.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.How to Save the Viewers' Wallets
B.Behind the Increasing Price of Movie Tickets
C.Technological Improvement on Movie Theatres
D.The Competition Between Movie Theatres and Streaming Services

Last Saturday, I drove back home from a long hard day. It was snowing heavily and the traffic inched slowly forward like snails. I was so hungry because I skipped my lunch that I decided to stop by KFC and had a quick bite before I continued my journey home. It took me a long time to find a place to park my car. With my face buried in my collar, I walked slowly in the snow. Soon my hands were numb(麻木的) with cold, so I pulled my gloves out of my coat pocket and put them on.
I ordered some fried chicken and dug into my pocket for my wallet to pay, only to find it was not there! I remembered I did bring it with me before I set out. Embarrassed, I left the chicken on the counter and said I would return in a minute. Deeply worried, I got out of KFC and ran towards my car, wondering where my wallet, with everything in it, was.
Fresh snow was like a blank paper, recording my tracks. My attention fixed on the ground, I expected to find it on my way. Unfortunately, what I found was only the shape of it in the snow. Obviously, I lost it when I pulled my gloves out. Judging from the footprints on the ground, I was not the only one. There was someone else joining my way. But the footprints of this guy were messy. It seemed that he walked back and forth. My heart sank. At a loss for which way he went, I knew I could never claim my wallet back. Bye, fried chicken, not today. I walked towards my car helplessly.
A short, skinny man was standing by my car. He seemed like homeless because he was dressed in an oversized worn-out coat and his face was dirty. He was stamping his feet to keep warm. I felt sorry for him because I had nothing to help him, no money, no food.
The man noticed me and asked if this was my car.
Refusing my money, he was about to leave.

根据第三段老师说的话“You can't eat flowers” “Why not use the money to buy more food ”可知,老师认为花不能吃,用这些钱买更多食物才是实用的。
根据倒数第二段中的“The woman inside waved goodbye...straight to the flowers. She put her face in them...there was a smile on her lips.”
故选A。

根据倒数第二段最后一句“And those upgrades come at a price, leading to more expensive tickets.”
根据最后一段中的“Because you're offering a superb experience...Audiences are willing to pay more for a particular experience.” 故选A。

37.E 根据小标题“Write out a travel budget.”

故填their。
故填but。
故填the。
故填have been。
故填to spend。
故填which。

One possible version:
The man noticed me and asked if this was my car. Surprised as I was, I nodded, waiting for what he was going to say. He seemed excited, directly coming closer and quickly taking out a wallet, which I knew was mine at a glance. I couldn't stop staring at the surprising packet. I knew I wouldn't say goodbye to my fried chicken today. But first, I needed to show my sincere gratitude to the good soul, who must have stayed in the cold for long just to find the owner. I opened my wallet, pulled out two banknotes and delivered them to him as my thankfulness. However, he just smiled, shaking his head.
Refusing my money, he was about to leave. Seeing him disappearing in the distance gradually, I finally made up my mind to stop him and asked him to wait a minute. I grabbed the money, rushed to the counter and ordered two portions of fried chicken. On heading back, I slipped the package into his hand, inviting him to enjoy the food together. We exchanged our thoughts a lot as we were eating and laughing. It was on that night that I came to realize that there are always people who try to help others despite their own trouble.
