阅读表达(共5小题,,满分10分)
Some people are very careful about everything they do. However, some people are risk-takers — they make decisions without thinking too much about the results. Teenagers are especially likely to take more risks than adults.
Why are some people more impulsive (易冲动的) Anna van Duijvenvoorde, a psychologist at Leiden University in the Netherlands, uses computer games to find out the answer. In one game, players are asked to click on a balloon on a computer screen. Every time they click, the balloon gets bigger. The bigger the balloon is at the end of the test, the better their scores will be. But if the balloon gets too big, it’ll explode (爆炸) and the player will get nothing.
Anna finds that when teens play this game, a part of their brain called the striatum (纹状体) will become more active. This part of the brain controls our feelings about rewards. Another part of the brain, the prefrontal cortex (前额皮质), helps us control our decision-making process.
It turns out that young people have more active striata and less active prefrontal cortexes, which affects their ability to make careful decisions. You might have already guessed that teens made more balloons explode during the game than adults — mainly because they are more willing to take risks and don’t take the time to think carefully.
“A teen’s brain is like a car with a very strong engine,” Anna said. “Its brakes (刹车) just don’t work well.”
