During my last year of junior high school, our teacher, Mrs. Debby, gave us a test. I was a
hard-working student and I did well in all subjects. I finished the questions successfully before
I read the last one: “What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school ”
Of course I thought that must have been a joke. I saw the cleaning woman every day. She
was short and about 50 years old. She had dark hair. But how could I know her name I had
never talked with her before. In fact, I’d never even thought about talking to her. I looked at my
paper and started to feel rather guilty. Finally, I handed in my paper, leaving the last one
unanswered.
Before the test ended, one student asked if the last question would be counted in our
grades.
“Of course,” the teacher said, “in your life, you will meet many people. They are all
important. They should get your attention and care, even if all you do is just smile and say
hello.”
I’ve never forgotten that lesson. Everyone should get my care and I should get to know all
of the people who work and live around me. That is, maybe, the most important lesson of my
life. I also later learned that the cleaning woman’s first name was Hannah.

Self-reflection (反省) Makes You a Better Learner.
Do you ever feel like you are just rushing from one subject to another When things
happen so fast, maybe you can’t understand clearly what you are doing or learning. 36
Self-reflection means slowing down and calming yourself, including calming your mind.
By calming down and going slowly, you give your brain a chance to think about what it has
received. 37 Others keep a diary. What’s more, taking notes is also OK. Each method
works, depending on your own personal learning—You can follow the steps to do
self-reflection.
Choose the proper time to do it. School textbooks are divided into units of study. This
makes it easier to begin self-reflection. 38 Sometimes you know the unit is over because
there is some kind of test. Use these natural breaks to stop and do self-reflection.
Find a quiet place and take out your reflection diary. 39 Let your mind think about
the notes you have written and make some connections.
40 Maybe you learned a new way to work out a math problem, but you’re not sure
when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to look for answers the
next time you are working with the same topic.
Successful students always know self-reflection is important. If you have never taken the

Forty Chinese students took part in the study. The scientists divided (分开) 58 into
