The conductor on the podium (指挥台) has no baton (指挥棒), no tailcoat and no musical score, but Android Alter 3 is kicking up a storm as it guides a symphony orchestra's players through their paces.
The robot has a humanoid face, hands and lower arms, which gesture with what could pass for passion as it bounces up and down and rotates during the live performance of Keiichiro Shibuya's opera Scary Beauty in the Emirate of Sharjah.
Video from the recent performance in the Emirate of Sharjah showed the machine turning to face orchestra members and waving its arms. Alter 3 even sang at times.
Shibuya said the involvement of robots in the everyday lives of humans is continually increasing. But, he said he thinks people will need to decide in the future how artificial intelligence can best improve the human experience.
Shibuya added that he believes humans and robots can learn to work together to create beautiful art. "This work is a metaphor of that relations between humans and technology," he said. Shibuya noted that sometimes the music-leading robot can "get crazy", making it difficult for the musicians to keep up. But other times, the humans and machines cooperate very well.
Shibuya said the robots and AI that exist today are "far from complete". He is interested in studying how such incomplete technology can be combined with art.
"I think this is a very exciting idea…We came to see what it looks like and how much is possible," said Anna Kovacevic. Another audience member, who gave his name only as Billum, said after the show, "You know, a human conductor is so much better." Although he said he is interested in AI and looks forward to big developments, he concluded on the project: "The human touch is lost."
4. What does Shibuya think of Alter 3

D. The audience thought Alter 3 would have a bright future.
6. What is the author's attitude towards the combination of robots and art
A. Positive B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Critical.
7. What can be the best title for the text
A. Robot Cooperates with Humans
B. Robot Conducts Human Orchestra
C The Significance of Robots in Art
D. The Relations Between AI and Humans

Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.
“A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.
The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them.
You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don’t get too excited—it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.
So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition. Keep in mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer.
8. What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2
A. Your weight changes little during a day.
B. Your scale mass is affected by many factors.
C. Your workout is not effective if you gain weight.
D. Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat.
9. What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months
A. You will weigh more.
B. Your muscle mass will decrease.
C. Your body fat will increase.
D. Your body composition will change.
10. How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body
A. 30 pounds. B. 60 pounds.
C. 100 pounds. D. 140 pounds.
11. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Why Do We Gain Weight
B. How to Work Out Effectively
C. What Is the Composition of Our Body
D. Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain
D
For people suffering from depression, there’s an all-natural treatment they should use — getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic risk, new research shows.
For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.
Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”
Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.
12. How did the researchers reach their conclusion
A. By analyzing a mass of data.
B. By conducting genetic research.
C. By comparing various levels of activity.
D. By tracking the subjects for many years.
13. What does the study show about depression
A. Physical activity betters medical treatment.
B. Exercise is able to decrease and prevent it.
C. Different levels of exercise intensity matter the same.
D. Exercising 35 minutes daily is the most effective treatment.
14. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Harmful. B. Complex.
C. Unusual. D. Common.
15. What is the purpose of the text
A. To discuss a disease.
B. To introduce a method.
C. To analyze a genetic risk.
D. To explain a phenomenon.

He put on his eyeglasses and went over to the window. The field was covered with white frost. Nothing moved out there in the deep quiet just before sunrise.
Ben wondered where the shot had come from. He thought perhaps he had dreamed he heard a gunshot. He looked out toward the frozen lake. Near the trees he saw a shining piece of metal. When it moved, Ben saw that it was a long gun. A minute later, a man came out of the woods. He wore hunting clothes. Suddenly a bird flew upward. The man quickly put the gun to his shoulder and shot. Ben watched the bird, praying it had not been hurt. It flew near the ground and went into some tall grass. Safe, Ben thought.
The hunter did not move for a moment, and then he began to follow the bird. Hate for the hunter burned inside Ben. Opening the window, he shouted, “Hey!” His voice cut through the stillness. The hunter stopped, but then continued to follow the bird. Ben shouted again, but this time the hunter did not stop. Then Ben rushed out and moved toward him. The hunter looked back at Ben. Ben had just bought this house in the woods. He wanted to protect everything on his land. He thought that everyone would obey the signs “No Hunting”.
However, he heard another gunshot. This troubled him deeply. How could he stop this hunter He walked toward the lake. He did not want to fight, but the man must go. He walked quietly. He wanted to surprise the hunter. But then, what would he do He could not fight the hunter.

Hello, everyone!
I feel honored to be here to talk to you on exercise. We students are heavily burdened with school work, and thus spare little time for regular physical exercise.
However, we all need a sound body. So I suggest we fit exercise into our busy schedule, making it part of our daily routine. Put down our books to stretch our arms from time to time. Do some jogging and jumping everyday. If we are able to make exercising our life habit, we will surely benefit from it both physically and mentally.
That’s all.Thank you.

Ben was awakened by a gunshot The sharp noise came through the thick stone walls of the house. It was cold in the bedroom and Ben was shaking as he got out of bed.

【答案】Suddenly he heard a bird's wings beating the dry grass. Ben took a deep breath and thought that the bird exposed its spot to the hunter, who was watching over these grassland. Just at the very moment the hunter was targeting the bird and was about to shoot when Ben shouted at the top of his voice “Stop!” It startled both the bird and the hunter- the bird soared up to the sky and the hunter abruptly put down the gun. He turned around toward the direction where Ben stood, asking “What are you doing here ”
There was something threatening in the hunter's cool quiet voice. Ben straightened his back and replied the intruder's confrontation with as much assertion and assurance as he could summon up or fake, “I am the landlord of this place and you step into my private property. I demand you leave right now.” The hunter gave a snort of contempt. “Yes, I have claimed this property! LEAVE!” The hunter swung his gun and whistled, leaving at last. Ben relieved a sigh. The frost on the dry grass started to melt when the rising sun popped out from the East with sunlight dancing on the signs “No hunting”.
【参考范文②】
Suddenly he heard a bird's wings beating the dry grass. Ben moved quickly toward the sound and saw a colored head of a beautiful bird. The bird did not move until Ben came close. Then it tried to fly away, but one wing was broken. Ben lifted the bird and held it close against his body. The bird fought to escape, but soon lay quietly in Ben's arms. Ben decided to take the bird home and fix its broken wing so that it could fly again. He was almost through the woods when he heard the hunter behind him saying “It is mine!”
There was something threatening in the hunter's cool quiet voice. The hunter stepped closer and claimed that bird again. Ben was frightened at first. However, when he saw the bird struggling weakly and made a wild, strange noise, he knew he could never give this bird to the hunter. This feeling gave Ben great strength, and he was no longer afraid. “This is my property. Leave here, or I'll call the police!” Ben said assertively. The woods were strangely quiet. To Ben's surprise, the hunter slowly walked away. Ben carefully studied the injured wing. Smoothing its feathers,he decided to stay with the bird and take care of it until its full recovery.
