Every holiday season, Patricia Gallagher fills her car with stuffed animals and drives around Philadelphia. She gives them not to kids but to seniors.
Patricia’s holiday tradition started in 2009. “I just got this idea to call two nursing homes at random and ask if I could come and read it was the Night Before Christmas,” she said. She brought some of her kids’ stuffed animals for the seniors to hold while she read. “But when I went to gather them and take them back to go to the next nursing home, nobody wanted to give up their stuffed animals,” she added. It was then and there that she realized the power of a simple holiday gift.
Patricia wanted to continue her tradition of giving, so she put an ad online, asking for gently used stuffed animals. In her first two years of collecting, she received more than 11,000 donated stuffed animals. She said sometimes local schools would hold stuffed animal collections on her behalf, or a child who outgrew their toys would donate. After receiving too many, Patricia started capping how many she would collect at a time, and said she could only take in about 250 stuffed animals each week during the holiday season. Then, she took them to nursing homes.
“The elderly want stuffed animals not only for comfort, but they were conversation starters. It reminded them of their childhood.” she said. And she recalled one man said, “You know, I never wanted to go to school. And my father said if I would go that day, he would take me to the Brooklyn Zoo. And you know what This was the first animal I saw there and it looked just like this giraffe.”
Spreading joy isn’t just a holiday pastime for Patricia. She is also known as the “Happy Flower Lady” around Philadelphia, because she collects old flowers from stores and passes them out to anyone who needs a pick-me-up.

Water poisoning is caused by too much consumption of water during a short period of time. Water in and of itself is not poisonous by an y means, but rapid intake of a large quantity of water can break the careful balance of sodium (钠) in the body fluids (体液). This contributes to a swelling of the cells, often in the central nervous system, including the brain.
When the cells can no longer bear the pressure, they can begin to die. This is indicated in serious forms of water poisoning. Symptoms of this condition include vomiting, headache and unresponsiveness. When the sodium in the blood falls to dangerous levels, brain damage and possibly death may occur.
What is a fatal (致命的) amount of water can vary from person to person, depending on one’s state of health, his or her physical activity at the time, the temperature and the amount of time in which the person consumes the water. For some, a one-time consumption of three liters can prove deadly. Although the person consuming the water may lose a lot of fluid during heavy labor or exercise, the electrolytes (电解质) are not replaced fast enough to avoid water poisoning.
Those particularly at risk for water poisoning are athletes engaged in long distance running like a marathon. Due to the need to replace large quantities of lost fluid, runners must drink a lot of water. This can lead to poisoning, so runners must replace their fluids with sports drinks that have added electrolytes. Other factors that contribute to water poisoning include activities that stimulate heavy sweating. The person working under extreme heat or intense humidity (湿气) must be careful when consuming water in order to maintain electrolyte balance. Mental diseases can also lead to water poisoning. Psychogenic polydipsia is a condition in which the affected person feels a need to drink a lot of water for unknown reasons.
8. What harm does water poisoning bring
A. It can affect brain function. B. It disturbs the balance of sodium
C. It causes a drop in blood pressure. D. It tends to make its victims nervous.
9. What can we know about proper amount of water to drink
A. Three liters per day is deadly. B. No single rule fits everyone.
C. It doesn’t bother healthy people. D. Physical activity is its decisive factor.
10. Who would probably fall victim to water poisoning
A. A patient suffering from stomachache. B. A laborer working with heavy sweating
C. An athlete fond of drinking sports drinks. D. A teenager doing appropriate exercise daily.
11. What might be discussed in the paragraph that follows
A. What has been found about sports drinks. B. What else contributes to water poisoning.
C. What are the symptoms of water poisoning. D. What can be done to avoid water poisoning.
D
Extended producer responsibility (EPR) refers to a policy approach where producers are given responsibility for the environmental impacts of their products throughout the product life cycle. Based on the polluter pays principle, this approach requires producers to finance the costs of recycling or disposing of products that consumers no longer want. It aims to shift the costs associated with the management of dealing with solid waste away from the local government.
The term EPR was first coined in 1990 by a Swedish professor, Thomas Lindhqvist, who introduced the idea of producers being responsible for their products to the Swedish Ministry of the Environment. The first example of EPR came in Germany in 1991, where manufacturers picked up household packaging alongside municipal waste collections. Since i990, countries around the world have adopted EPR policies around key sectors such as packaging, electronics, batteries, and vehicles.
EPR creates a financial motivation for producers to design products that last longer and can be recycled. This is because EPR places the end- of- life costs on the producer. EPR has historically been successful in the managing of products that pose risks to communities such as batteries, paint and old medicines. EPR has led many producers to redesign these items to reduce their risks. Finally, due to ERP closing the loop (循环) on materials management, this approach uses much less energy than it takes to produce items from the beginning.
However, critics of EPR have issues with producers adding recycling costs to the initial price tag of a product. Another disadvantage is that at the international level, it can negatively affect imports to countries that have strict EPR policies as producers in other countries will not want to be subject to extra fees from these policies. Additionally, it restricts competition at the local level as producers who take on the extra costs to accommodate EPR policies are at a competitive disadvantage to those who are able to bend the rules and get out of paying these costs.
12. Who may be most in favor of the policy EPR
A. The local government. B. The producers.
C. The end consumers. D. The retail traders.
13. What are the producers likely to do under the policy EPR
A. Cut down their selling costs. B. Increase production capacity.
C. Produce sustainable products. D. Reproduce out-of-date goods.
14. Which word can best describe the author’s attitude to the policy EPR
A. Tolerant B. Objective C. Conservative D. Suspicious
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. The Constantly Varying Policy EPR
B. Challenge s of EPR Implementation
C. Holding Back Global Trade and Competition: EPR
D. Reducing Waste and Shifting Responsibilities: EPR

When it comes to having fun in the sun, it’s easy to lose track of time. If you’re not careful, this can be quite dangerous. 16 But it can easily be prevented—all you need is a little sunscreen.
17 People have been using chemical pastes to protect themselves from the sun for centuries. But the first modern sunscreen sold on the market was offered by French company: L’oreal in 1935.
Several other companies were quick to release their own sunscreens. Perhaps the biggest advancement in the world of sunscreen came in the 1970s, when scientists started looking at the sun protection factor, or SPF. 18
The advantages of using sunscreen are obvious. It limits the painful effects of sunburn. 19 Millions of people have died from skin cancer caused by ultraviolet rays from the SUITL. Remember to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside.
Unfortunately, there are many mistaken ideas about sunscreen. 20 Some also think you only need to put it on once for a whole day’s protection or that you don’t need it on cloudy days. None of these things are true. Experts say you should apply sunscreen every two hours when outside-in the daytime, no matter how dark your skin is or what the weather is like.
A. And it can even save your life.
B. Sunscreen is not exactly a recent invention.
C. Choosing a sunscreen isn’t as simple as it used to be.
D. In direct sunlight, sunburn can occur in less than 15 minutes.
E. This rating is a number that shows how effective a sunscreen is.
R It’s believed that you don’t need much sunscreen if you have dark skin.
G. Some think a good method is to cover as much as possible with protective clothing.

Joey was so excited he could hardly wait to get to the store. He walked so fast that his sister Beth had to run. “Do you have to hurry like that ” she puffed. On his way from school he had seen that baseball ca p in Rogers’ store window. Only a dollar, and this was the last cap! Joey had looked at the ca p a long time. He wanted it more than anything. Every boy at school had one.
Joey thought of his piggy bank, into which he put every coin for running errands (差使) for his family and neighbors.
Joey raced home, not stopping for anything. He held the fat iron pig, opened it carefully, and poured out the coins. Ten… twenty... thirty... ninety cents. If only he had one more dime (一角硬币)!
Lost in thought, Joey stared out the window. “What’s wrong, Joey ” asked Mother. Joey told about the money and the cap. “If you give me what you have, I’ll add a dime,” Mother said, handing him a dollar bill. “I’ll have some errands for you tomorrow.”
Joey jumped up. “Oh, thanks, Mom. That’s great!” And away went Joey and Beth to the store with the dollar bill in Joey’s pocket.
They turned the last corner. Ahead was a group of boys and girls, talking heatedly and looking down at the sidewalk.
One of the children was Ronny, a new boy who had been in this town only a short time. Ronny’s father had been sick, so there wasn’t much money for extras—like baseball cap.
“What’s the matter ” Beth asked, anxiously.”
“It’s Ronny,” answered Susan. “He’s been working and finally saved up a whole dollar, and now it’s lost!”
Joey went over to Ronny.
“We’ll all help look. We’ll find it!”
“Ronny was going to get that last cap in Rogers’ window.” put in Billy.
“I wanted it a lot. I want to join them.” Ronny said slowly.
Suddenly Joey remembered how Ronny had watched the fellows playing baseball, his eyes lighting up eagerly as they shouted and ran.
