Li Kui, Lin Chong, Song Jiang ... these are characters ( 角 色 ) from the great Chinese novel Outlaws of the Marsh (《水浒传》). Every Spring Festival, they “come out” of the novel and dance in the street. This is Yingge dance.
Yingge dance, or “Song of Heroes”, is a kind of traditional Chinese folk dance (传统民间舞蹈) in Chaoshan, Guangdong. It is one of the symbols of Lingnan culture.
You can see dance, Chinese opera and kung fu in Yingge dance and it gets ideas from Outlaws of the Marsh and tells stories of the good fighting the bad. So Chaoshan people believe that Yingge dance at the beginning of the Chinese New Year can drive the bad away, welcome spring and bring good luck to them.
During the show, the dancers wear opera make-up (京剧妆容) and active clothing, with short
sticks (棍子) in their hands. When walking and dancing, they hit (击打) the sticks together. With the fast-beating drums and the dancers’ cool moves, the dance makes people excited. People of all ages in Guangdong like the dance.
Woman Yingge dance started later than the man dance. It mostly gets ideas from the stories of Mu Guiying and Hua Mulan. Zheng Zixin is one of a woman Yingge dance team in Shantou. Many people came to know her online when she was dancing during the Spring Festival. “Yingge dance is very cool,” she said. “Practicing the dance is hard work, but we will bring out our best.”
