In 1916, two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn, N.Y.—Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood—traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise. Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff's granddaughter.
Why did they go then Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken.
They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.
In Wickenden's book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls' decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed(牵涉) drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy's return to Auburn.
Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism(坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top: "When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter."

C. To write a book. D. To do sightseeing.
12.What can we learn about the girls from paragraph 3

Born in 1898 to middle-class parents in Bavaria, Bertolt Brecht grew up in a comfortable environment. In elementary school, he met Caspar Nehar, who became a life-long friend and designed sets for many of Brecht's plays. As a student at Munich University during World War I, the dramatist studied theater and became interested in German cabaret performances (a form of entertainment with singing and dancing that was performed in restaurants or clubs).
Brecht began writing works for the stage around this time, which won some words of praise. He also spent time studying the work of political theorist Karl Marx and socialism. He began to form his theory of "epic theater." This theater, different from the traditional aims of drama as described by Aristotle, was not meant to be an imitation of reality or a way to entertain people.
Epic theater is meant to present an argument and invite the audience to make judgments on it. Traditional conventions, like not looking directly at the audience, are ignored, Brecht tried to prevent audiences from sympathizing with his characters, and wanted them to care about the issues being discussed.
In 1927, Bertolt Brecht began working with a composer named Kurt Weill. Together they wrote several plays, the most famous of which being The Three penny Opera. The play opened in 1928 and starred Wil's wife, Lotte Lenya. Although this musical adaptation of an 18th century opera by John Gay initially was attacked by critics, it grew in popularity and was performed over 400 times over the next two years.
As a Marxist, Bertolt Brecht fled Germany in 1933 because of the Nazi terror and moved around Europe. Still under the shadow of Adolf Hitler, Brecht left Europe for America in 1941. During this time, he wrote several plays protesting the rule of Hitler, including Moher Courage and Her Children, The Good Peron of Sezuan, Caucasian Chalk Circle, and The Misery of the Third Reich In 1949 Brecht moved to East Berlin. Seven years later he died from a heart attack.

Food poems, like love poems, have the potential to be vague(朦胧的) and sad. The New York Times' description of a book of food poetry refers to Winston Churchill's supposed declaration, "Takeaway this pudding. It has no theme." This, of course, is a sad comment on food. Yes, eating can be mere gluttony(暴食) at times—we've all had late-night chocolate or thoroughly enjoyed McDonald's breakfast hash browns. In reality, writers like Daniel Orozco paint a poetic picture of these sorts of food—the thrill and shame of junk food.
Food poetry can be unbelievably described, inspiring feelings of pleasure and homesickness in the same way as eating does. It can also be straightforward or playful—just like food itself. Shell Silverstein's Italian Food starts off with "Oh, how I love Italian food/I eat it all the time/Not just cause how good it tastes'/But cause how good it rhymes" and continues in rhyming couplets for the remainder of the poem.
Other food poems—certainly the best ones—have layers of complexity that are slowly revealed, like having a perfectly assembled sandwich or skillfully mixed drink. Henrick Ibsen's Tea—A Comparison from Love's Comedy begins with a pleasant garden gathering but quickly delves into the scenery and politics of Eastern nations, from which the tea has been imported.
Still other food poems are simple collections of the poet's most beloved meal, like Carlos Williams' loyalty to caviar(鱼子酱), For Viola: De Gustibus. He writes, "Beloved you are/Caviar of Caviar/Of all I love you best". Similarly, Jonathan Swift declares his love of mutton in the emotional cooking poem: How I Shall Dine.
Kevin Young, the editor of The Hungry Ear, a collection of food poetry, explains poets' love of food: "One of the things I think poets enjoy about a great meal is that it goes away...that you make a terrific meal for friends and family, and if you succeed, it's gone."
11.What can be inferred from the first paragraph
A.Winston Churchill doesn't like puddings.
B.Eating is a bad subject in terms of poetry.
C.Many people like junk food despite its harm.
D.Food poems and love poems are the same.
12.Why does the author refer to Shell Silverstein's poem
A.To suggest that Shell Silverstein is the best poet.
B.To show how Shell Silverstein likes Italian food.
C.To prove that food poems have some complexity.
D.To show that food poetry can be straightforward or playful.
13.What do we know about Henrick Ibsen's poem in the third paragraph
A.It slowly reveals some complexity.
B.It is referred to as the best food poem.
C.It talks about a pleasant garden gathering.
D.It introduces where tea has been imported.
14.Who writes about his favorite meal
A.Henrick Ibsen. B.Carlos Williams.
C.Kevin Young. D.Shell Silverstein.

1.答案:to get
故填to get。
Before you quit your job是时间状语从句,逗号后面的句子是主句,主句无主语,可判定为祈使句。
7.答案:be abandoned
且abandon与主语Bad customs and laws之间是动宾关系,应使用被动语态be abandoned。故填be abandoned。
8.答案:to lose
故填to lose。
10.答案:will realize
本句考查"祈使句+and/or+含有一般将来时的陈述句"结构,其中陈述句结构为sb.+will +do sth.。will do 在句中作谓语。故填will realize。
根据第一段中的“we've all had late-night chocolate or thoroughly enjoyed McDonald's breakfast hash browns... the thrill and shame of junk food”可推测,虽然垃圾食品对健康有害,但是很多人喜欢垃圾食品。故选C。
根据第二段中的“It can also be straightforward or playful-just like food itself. Shell Silverstein...of the poem.”
13.答案:A
根据第三段第一句“Other food poems... have layers of complexity that are slowly revealed...” 故选A。
根据第四段第一句“Still other food poems are simple collections of the poet's most beloved meal, like Carlos Williams’ loyalty to caviar...”
解析:①根据段首句“Pick a specific theme or idea.”和设空处上文“You can start your poem by focusing on a specific theme or idea that you find fascinating.”可推测,B项承接上文,进一步说明这样做的目的,符合语境,B项中的“This”指代上文中的“focusing on a specific theme or idea”。故选B。
②根据段首句“Choose a poetic form.” Choose one poetic form and stick to that structure so your poem feels coherent to your readers.”
和设空处下文“Using concrete imagery will immerse... and make images come alive for them.”
④根据上文“Literary devices like metaphor and simile add variety and depth to your poetry.”
⑤下文“Keep a pen close by so you can mark any lines or words that sound awkward or jumbled.” 故选A。
