三、阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)
(A)
Have you ever had the strange feeling that you were being watched You turn around and sure enough, someone was looking right at you!
Parapsychologists(灵学家) say that humans have a natural ability to sense when someone is looking at them. To research whether such a“ six sense” really exists, Robert Baker, a psychologist(心理学家) at the University of Kentucky, did two experiments.
In the first one, Baker sat behind unknowing people in public places and looked at the backs of their heads for 5 to 15 minutes. The subjects were eating, drinking, reading, studying, watching TV, or working at a computer. Baker made sure that the people could not tell that he was sitting behind them during those periods. Later when he questioned the subjects, almost all of them said they had no feeling that someone was looking at them.
For the second experiment, Baker told the subjects that they would be looked at from time to time from behind in a lab setting. The people had to write down when they felt when they were looked at and when they weren't. Baker found the subjects were no better at telling when they were looked at and when they weren't.
Baker says that people do not have the ability to feel when they are being looked at. If people don't believe the result of his two experiments, said Baker,“I suggest they repeat the experiments and see for themselves.”

The world has a plastics problem. And not just with bottles. Straws(吸管), toothbrushes, toys— all kinds of plastics are placed in landfills. There are 5 billion tons of plastic waste in the world. Landfills have a large part of it. By 2050, they could have 13 billion tons.
Much of plastic rubbish finds its way into the ocean. Scientists say 165 million tons of plastic pieces are floating around out there. And most plastic won't disappear itself. It will remain in the ocean forever. Whales get caught in plastic fishing nets. Birds die because of eating plastic straws and bottle caps. It endangers ocean life. Plastic rubbish even ends up in the food we eat.
Governments are realizing that recycling may not be enough. They are taking more actions. Though it is hard work, it is still a solvable problem. In Britain, people are not allowed to use plastic bags except in hospitals. Scotland and several coastal cities in the US stop people from using plastic straws as well. The US alone throws away some 500 million plastic straws a day. That's enough to circle the Earth twice.“ Saying no to a plastic straw is an easy way to make a big difference,”Dana Loffl in who started www.strawfree.org said.“ Do we really want to pass on to our children a world harmed by plastic ”
People have found some tasty ways to reduce waste. A company in India made the first- ever spoon that people can eat. You don't have to eat the spoon. You can throw it away. It decomposes(分解) in just a few days. David Edwards, a scientist at Harvard University, designed an eatable bag which can protect the food or drink inside. It is a delicious replacement for plastic ones.

We were going to play against a team from a country school.
They didn’t come until the last minute. They looked worse than we had thought. They were wearing dirty blue trousers and looked like farm boys.
We sat down for a rest. We felt that we didn't need any practice against a team like that.
The game began. One of us got the ball and he shot a long pass to our forward. From out of nowhere a boy in an old T- shirt stopped the ball and with the beautiful style he shot and got two points. Then another two points in a minute. Soon the game was all over. We were beaten by the country team.
After that, we thought a lot. We certainly learned that even though your team is very good, you can't look down upon the others and still need to do your best. And the most important lesson we learned was: One can't judge a person or a team only by their clothes.

A survey has been published which shows that British people don't like their neighbours very much. 80% of the people who took part in the survey feel that their neighbours hardly pay attention to others' feelings. 25% don't talk to the people who live next door and 10% don't even know their names. In fact, one million people in Britain would like to move because they don't get along well with their neighbours.
According to the survey, the biggest problem is noise. Many of the complaints(抱怨) about noise came from people who live in flats and old houses. These places often have thin walls which can't stop the noise from next door.
The other main problems are disagreements(不和) about car parking spaces, and old people complaining about the young. Some disagreements last a long time. In one case, people who live in the same building haven't talked to each other for fifteen years. Sometimes the disagreements end in violence. In one of the worst cases, a man killed a neighbour because he kept parking in“ his space”.
Another survey shows that 90% of the neighbours never share a meal, 80% have never had a drink together and 20% have never even spoken. However, when neighbours become each other's friends, they are often ready to offer help, as we can see in many parts of the world.
One solution(解决办法) to such problems is to talk about them with a professional(专业的) organisation and if necessary, to sign a written agreement. Now people can get this service in more and more towns.
