Lara and Tara are twins. They look like each other, but they are very different in everything
else. They always argued that the opposite one was wrong. For years, their arguments continued. To
put an end to their fights, their parents decided to create a small game. They wanted the girls to
understand that they were both correct from their own point of view. They were taken into the dining room. In the room, a big board was placed in the middle. Lara was asked to stand on one side of the board and Tara on the other side. They couldn’t see the other side of it. Now, their father asked Lara,
“What’s the color of the board ” She replied, “It’s black!” Their mother asked Tara the same
question. She replied, “It’s white!” The two girls began to argue again. While Lara was confident it
was black, Tara was sure it was white. Then, they were asked to exchange(交换) their places. They
couldn’t believe their eyes. Tara, who insisted it was a whiteboard, saw a black one. Similarly, Lara, who argued the board was black, was shocked to see a white one. They understood that each of them

Looking inside our planet
You may have learned from your textbook that Earth is made up of four layers: the crust( 地 壳),the mantle(地幔), the outer core(外地核), and the inner core(内地核). But according to a new
study, there maybe a fifth layer inside Earth.
Scientists at the Australian National University(ANU) found this new layer within Earth’s inner
core. They call it the “inner-inner core”.
The inner core, at 5,100 to 6,371 kilometers below Earth’s surface(表面), is hard. It’s made of
iron alloy(铁合金). But starting from 5,800 km below the Earth’s surface, scientists have found
some changes. They found there are iron crystals(晶体) pointing in an east-west direction. But other iron crystals in the inner core point in a north-south direction. This difference makes the inner-inner
core a new layer.
Earth used to be very hot before it cooled down. According to Joanne Stephenson, one of the researchers, this new finding suggests another cooling event in Earth’s history. It can help us
understand more about how Earth formed.

We do eye exercise. We wear sunglasses. We do lots of things to protect our eyes. But we
usually forget another important part of our body—the ears.
Ears help us hear the world. But manythings, such as loud noises, can cause hearing loss( 听 力丧失). Once this happens, it’shard to get your hearing back. So how can we protect our ears
Let’s take a look together.
Keep your ears dry and warm
Dry your ears with a towel( 毛巾) after swimming or taking a bath. If you feel water in yourear,
shake(摇晃) your head a little bit. This can help you get the water out of yourear.
Also, when the sun is shining, wear some sunscreen on your ears. During the winter, protect your
ears with a hat or a scarf.
How to clean your ears
Usually, our ears clean themselves. The earwax( 耳屎) builds up,dries out, and then comes out of
the ear along with some dirt(污垢).
Don’t clean your ears with anything sharp(尖锐的), or it can make the earwax go too deep into your
ears and hurt them. But if your ears start to hurt, you can goto a doctor for help.
How to use headphones
Don’t listen to loud music on your headphones(耳机) for along time. Follow the 60:60 rule: listen
to music at 60 percent of your headphones’ maximum volume(最大音量) for no more than 60
minutes a day.

X 书面表达
Should friends be different or the same Last week Yuying High school asked this question
among 500 students. Here are the results.
40% of the students thought friends should be the same, while 25% said friends should be different and the rest 35% didn’t care if friends are the same or different. For me, I also don’t mind the differences between friends. But I think a true friend should reach for your hand and touch your
heart.
My best friend Lily is as tall as me but I am heavier than her. We both like talking with others,
but Lily is more outgoing and friendlier than me. We both like sports, but I only like watching sports
on TV. Lily likes to play it every day, because she says it is healthy for the body and themind. She
also likes to eat healthy food while I enjoy fast food , so I think Lily is much healthier than me. I
should learn from her.
