When Rachel Ratelle saw a news video of a burned koala trying to climb a tree to safety in fire-ravaged (火灾肆虐的) Australia, she decided to do something about it.
She looked up wildlife rescue and relief agencies in Australia to find out what they needed most. Besides donations, many organizations asked for hand-sewn (手缝的) and knitted pouches (袋子) and wraps for koalas and other animals that were burned or had lost their homes and parents in the fires.
This idea attracted Ratelle, but there was just one problem.
“I’d never sewn in my life,” said Ratelle, 17, a senior at Rancho Buena Vista High School in Vista, US. “Giving money seemed like something too simple. But I wanted to directly help these animals by doing something myself, so I decided to learn how to sew.”
Over the next few months, Ratelle bought her own sewing machine and taught herself how to sew via videos online. Then she purchased 18 yards of fabric and sewed 25 pouches of different sizes and shipped them off to For Australian Wildlife Needing Aid (FAWNA), one of several relief organizations that have rushed to rescue koalas, kangaroos and other species suffering from burns.
A week later, she received a photo from FAWNA with a young joey (幼兽) in one of her larger pouches. “It made me feel like I contributed to the world and it showed how a simple act of kindness can go a long way,” said Ratelle, who hopes to study biology for a future career as a nurse practitioner.
“I plan to use my new sewing skills to help animals and people devastated (蹂躏) by natural disasters,” she said.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, it estimated that 1.2 billion animals have died, as a result of the bushfires, which have burned more than 26 million acres in Australia.
Several craft guild (手工业行会) websites around the world have mobilized (动员) for Australian relief by making the animal pouches. Karen Newberry and her two daughters Madison, 12 and Rochelle, 8, from San Diego also offered their help in such a way. For Newberry, “it was a big push that made we crafters, sewers to realize there’s something more we can do than just make things for ourselves,” she said.
24.What do the first two paragraphs mainly talk about
A.What inspired Ratelle to learn to sew.
B.What is needed to save koalas and other species.
C.The poor living conditions of wild animals in Australia.
D.Different ways to help koalas and other animals in Australia.
25.How did Ratelle feel when she received a photo from FAWNA according to the text

C.Surprised. D.Disappointed.
26.The statistics (统计数字) in Paragraph 8 are used to show ______.
A.how frequent the bushfires are in Australia
B.how harmful the bushfires are in Australia
C.the great varieties of wild animals in Australia
D.the difficulties facing relief organizations in Australia
27.What do Newberry’s words in the last paragraph suggest
A.People should stay united through difficult times.
B.Life is not easy for crafters and sewers in Australia.
C.It is challenging for crafters and sewers to do relief work.
D.Crafters and sewers can do more to help animals.

Black taxis have been a common sight in London for decades. Now these taxis and their drivers have become the focus of a new exploration into Alzheimer’s (阿兹海默症). For those on the outside, it may seem that behind the wheel of these black taxis are just regular people who help move us to our destinations. But within their brains is a map of London’s streets that has put GPS technology to shame for decades.
“The Knowledge”, the test for London’s taxi drivers, stands among the hardest mental examinations one could ever undergo. It involves recalling information repeatedly from the memory of minute details about 56,0000 streets in London, from Trafalgar Square to the tiniest residential lanes.
Normally, the hippocampus (海马体) feels the effects of Alzheimer’s most. University College London and Alzheimer’s Research UK are studying these taxi drivers’ brains, as it has been found that the hippocampus controlling the brain’s short-term memory and spatial (空间的) memory systems is enlarged in their brains. Moreover, the taxi drivers’ hippocampi continue to enlarge as they go on doing the job for more years, suggesting that perhaps there’s something we can do to reproduce the effect in the general population.
Lead researcher Hugo Spiers was part of the team which 20 years ago found that, like birds and squirrels, the taxi drivers’ hippocampi gradually got bigger. Indeed, research has found for years that any animal that requires a detailed spatial knowledge of their territory experiences growth in the hippocampus.
Spiers’ team hopes to deal with Alzheimer’s by studying the taxi drivers’ brains. To collect more information on the mechanisms (机制) that cause the “brain gain”, Spiers has asked thirty of London’s taxi drivers connected to an MRI machine to drive around on their routes. The machine will allow the researchers to gather real time observations of the workings of the hippocampus. “It’s been a joy to help scientists fight with the disease,” said taxi driver Robert Lordan.
28.What can we say about “The Knowledge”
A.It lasts for a few minutes only.
B.It is usually held in London’s busy streets.
C.It is a great challenge to people’s memory.
D.It invites some residents in London to be judges.
29.What has been found about the taxi drivers’ hippocampi
A.They are more likely to be harmed.
B.They grow in the taxi drivers’ careers.
C.They benefit from daily communication most.
D.They are poor at controlling short-term memory.
30.Why does the author mention the research on animals
A.To imply the new study benefits the animal kingdom as well.
B.To point out that more studies on animals’ brains are needed.
C.To show animals’ hippocampi are very different from humans’.
D.To prove the use of certain knowledge influences brain development.
31.Why do the researchers observe the taxi drivers with an MRI machine
A.To figure out who has the largest hippocampus.
B.To know how Alzheimer’s develops in their brains.
C.To find out how their hippocampi perform at work.
D.To test whether the special machine is effective.

For most ordinary purposes, machine translation (MT) has got a lot better in the past years. The biggest source of improvement has been the adoption of “deep learning” in training translating systems. But improvement has also come about through the expansion of clever companies solving individual tasks. Some have created specialist dictionaries so that important terms can be translated accurately and consistently. Other inventions combine MT with a human translator’s editing tools, which means translators spend most of their time checking and perfecting MT output, rather than doing the work of the translating themselves.
For some translators, being a machine’s editor may sound depressing. This can be seen the other way around, however. A human repeatedly translating identical formulae can get bored. Allowing the machine to do these boring jobs frees the translator to apply specialized knowledge, solving more intellectually satisfying problems.
What are those problems One Madrid-based translator for a big law firm describes a recent task. It involved making a critical distinction in a legal document: a Spanish word (dolo) that’s properly translated as “wilful misconduct” was translated only as “misconduct” by software. Since the law requires considerably severer punishment when the misconduct is “wilful”, the omission (省略) was potentially disastrous.
Today, many translation firms are proud of using MT, not as a crutch (依赖) but as a means to cut costs and turnaround times. Part of their job becomes knowing what can be automated and what cannot. Instruction manuals can be left to MT while others like a novel legal argument cannot.
The bad news for some translators is that a tap of repeatable, easy work is being turned off. The good news is that what remains will be brain-challenging stuff for people who know a language and something else. Tales of artificial intelligence usually test humans against machines. But the translators of the future will be neither entirely human nor machine. They will be human beings with mechanical enhancements.
32.What can we learn about machine translation from paragraph 1
A.It has been mostly used by specialists.
B.Lots of efforts have been made to improve it.
C.Some clever companies have made a fortune from it.
D.It has replaced human translators in some simple tasks.
33.What can be inferred from the case mentioned by the Madrid-based translator
A.Experienced translators are hard to find.
B.Machine translation can be inaccurate.
C.Machine translation has led to many misjudgments.
D.It is difficult for translators to tell“wilful misconduct”from“misconduct”.
34.What is many translation firms’ attitude towards using machine translation today
A.Positive. B.Critical. C.Uninterested. D.Doubtful.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Technology contributes to productive translators
B.Translation is faced with a great technical challenge
C.The translator of the future is a human-machine hybrid
D.Career opportunities in the field of translation are increasing

Being sensitive means that you are observant, careful, and thoughtful. It can also mean you sometimes overinterpret or overreact to perceived criticism or judgment. If you tend to be a highly sensitive person, you are more likely to misread signals from others, sense social threats, and struggle to adapt to new circumstances. 36
The power of insensitivity can be interpreted as “sluggish (迟钝的) power” . 37 For example, those working on complex research projects with “sluggish power” persist with focus and determination in the face of challenges such as tight deadlines and limited resources. Their resilience facilitates effective problem-solving, ensuring the successful completion of tasks despite obstacles.
38 That is one of the important reasons why insensitivity allows a person to better survive and adapt in a competitive environment. Knowing oneself is difficult, but knowing oneself correctly is undoubtedly an excellent ability — a trait shared by many successful people, who all clearly know where their strengths are, what they can do, what they want, and what direction to go.
Practicing insensitivity involves several key strategies. Firstly, be assertive. Express our needs and opinions positively and with confidence. Secondly, adopt a forward-looking mindset. 39 Additionally,
detach from external influences. Avoid excessive concern over others’ opinions and speculation on others’ thoughts. Lastly, manage relationships. Recognize our personal responsibilities while respecting others’ boundaries. Don’t interfere with other people’s subjects and don’t let others interfere with ours either.
40 Once you become a bit “blunt” and slow down the pace, you will feel more comfortable.
A.Learn to view the problem as two parts.
B.That’s where the need to be insensitive comes from.
C.I hope everyone can obtain the ability to be insensitive.
D.Behind insensitivity is a strong sense of self-awareness.
E.Being a highly sensitive person can come with many challenges.
F.It implies the ability to calmly face the setbacks and firmly move forward.
G.Focus on long-term goals rather than the ups and downs of life at the moment.

One of my teachers once asked my class what our favourite memory was. She was asking for the moment in which “you felt the best, you felt that you had the world in the palm of your hand. ” Some described grand awards; others described winning a tournament. But I felt the best when I first learned how to ride my bike at thirteen. I didn’t mind my classmate’s stares and snickering, because I knew there was more to the story.
My brother and I shared a typical brotherly relationship: we couldn’t stand each other. Or, to be honest, he couldn’t stand me. I hero-worshipped him. My clothes mysteriously looked like his, and even my words tended to mimic those I heard from him. Many times, I even wanted to literally follow my brother, sobbing every time I was prevented from hanging around with him. Needless to say, I was an annoyance to him. Any sort of conversation we had usually degraded to fighting, and try as I might, my brother usually won.
After a while, I stopped trying to impress him and learned to be totally indifferent; perhaps the silent treatment would get more approval. I was wrong. We soon fell into a sad pattern—I avoided him, he ignored me, and deep inside, it hurt. Indifferent or hostile, he was only a brother in name. So that’s how it was between us. I believed we would forever be apart, two housemates without conversation, two strangers without warmth. And nothing more.
I still remember the day I learned to ride a bike. I had received it that Christmas, which was great, until I realized I had no idea how to ride it. My mom was too busy and had long since abandoned any attempt to teach me. I decided to teach myself to ride, a little bit each day, but in vain. On that fateful day, it was no different. I was coming to the end of my daily one-hour torture, and I was so frustrated that I threw my bike aside and began to cry.

But in the end we decided to keep to the same plan as last year.
M: But, as I understand, last year’s course wasn’t a complete success, was it
W: Well, we were actually very surprised by the number of people interested in the course. We didn’t actually have enough assistants to look after all the children. Besides, there was such a lot of rain that we couldn’t go outside as often as we wanted to.
M: So, what activities can the children look forward to this year
W: Well, once again there’ll be artists and musicians who will lead creative classes. We also considered providing some more exciting adventure sports. But we decided not to, in the end. Instead we’re introducing some fun programs. I think it’ll be good fun for children.
Text 10
Pleased to be here today. My name’s Joan and I’d like to share with you something about my French learning. I still remember when I first started to learn the language I didn’t really have a problem with the pronunciation. I just had a hard time memorizing words. But I made a great effort and soon I was scoring ten out of ten in all of the tests. By the time I got to university, I could do some writing and translations without much difficulty, and I actually enjoyed learning the grammar rules. Then as part of my university course I had to go and live in France for a year. As soon as I arrived, I realized I didn’t know how to order the type of coffee I liked, and trying to find somewhere to live or stay was something difficult to deal with. I called people about information in the paper, but I had to keep putting the phone down because I couldn’t understand a word they were saying — they all spoke so quickly! I could see then that there’s no point in just knowing words if you can’t hold a conversation with a native speaker. The ability to speak freely is what helps you get a job, hold a conversation or just buy things you need.

The event was lled with meaningful activities. The voluntary work started from nine o’clock, lasting for three hours. Upon our arrival at the local community center, we began to conduct different tasks. Not only did we clean public spaces, but also we assisted the elderly with their daily tasks. Additionally, we organized a health awareness campaign, educating residents on healthy living habits.
All the students involved participated with great enthusiasm. I deeply realized the significance of community engagement and the ful llment voluntary work brings.

I guess that was what caused my brother to come outside. I turned my face away, fearing he would tease me. Unexpectedly, he gently picked my bike up and gestured me over, “Get on it.” His determined look smoothed away my doubts. As he gripped the back seat, I got on the bike, took a deep breath and started to pedal, holding tightly onto the handlebars. During the whole process, we didn’t talk much. He simply offered a few necessary instructions at times. But never once did he shout at me, nor did he let me fall. His patient teaching proved efficient and I gradually got the hang of riding.
An hour later, I was showing off my riding skill to my mom. She was amazed to see me riding steadily around the yard. While sharing my learning experience with her in excitement, I noticed my brother standing at a distance smiling at me. I cast him a grateful look and he nodded and then walked back into the house. From that day on, the sad pattern between us began to change. There were occasional conversations between us, filled with less embarrassment but increasing concern. I could feel a different kind of brotherly relationship slowly developing between us. I would always treasure that day as my favourite memory, the moment when I felt the best.
