I like an organized, clean house. I am, however, often in the minority in the house.
Every time I walk in the front door and make the turn to hang my coat in the mudroom(A mudroom is a space set aside in a house where people can take off their outdoor clothing, remove their soiled shoes, store equipment), I f row n at the mess that meets my eyes. Lots of shoes littered all over the floor, along with slippers(拖鞋) and anything you can imagine. No matter how many times I attempt to restore the scene, this room immediately ends up back in mess.
The other day I started to think about why the mudroom is the most challenging room to keep in order. I came to the realization that it is because the mudroom is both the beginning and the end, it is the jumping off point to the adventures of our day and it is the storage ground when the sun sets. In turn, those four walls have become a holder of memories, and a museum of my family's treasures, as each item tells a story of those that I love most.
The bright white Nike high tops cast off on the floor belong to my oldest son, nearing12, presenting his emerging fashion sense. The worn black and blue runners introduce my youngest, a lively tornado in a 10-year-old's body.
The slippers belong to my husband. They were a Christmas present from the boys and me many years ago. During the colder months, it is the first thing that my husband does when he return s home from work, he slips on those grey wool slippers and continues to settle in. He loves and wears them so much that the initial pair wore right through the toe. He won't part with those treasures but now has a second pair; the exact same make and model.
Recently it occurred to me that my annoyance at the mudroom chaos is temporary. This disorder will last only a few years. The boys are getting older, and the toys and mess will move on... as will my sons eventually. This makes me sad for what I know will feel like a big loss. Each day that I see that collection of goods means that my house is full of love, energy, passion and family.

Reunions offer a chance to reflect on how much has changed. One happened in Hollywood when Here premiered(首映), bringing together the actors, director and writer behind Forrest Gump 40 years later for a new film. The stars were “de-aged” using new AI tools, making them more youthful in some scenes and enabling the filmmakers to see the transformation in real time while shooting.
With the use of generative AI in film making come things worth watching. The first is how AI will be used to tell new types of stories, as storytelling becomes more personalised and interactive. No one is quite sure how the nature of storytelling will change, but it is sure to. David Thomson, a film historian, compares generative AI to the advent of sound. When movies were no longer silent, it changed the way plot points were made and how deeply viewers could connect with characters. Cristbba l Valenzuela, who runs a company providing AI-enhanced software, says AI is like a “new kind of camera”, offering a fresh “opportunity to reimagine what stories are like”. Both are right.
Another big development to watch is how AI will be used as a time-saving tool. Generative AI will automate and simplify complex tasks like film-editing and special effects. For a glimpse of the future, watch Everything Everywhere All at Once, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2023. It featured a scene that used a “rotoscoping” tool to edit out the green-screen background and make a talking rock more believable. It shortened into hours what might have otherwise taken days of video-editing.
What is also noticeable is more dramatic conflicts between creators and those running AI platforms. This year is likely to bring floods of lawsuits (诉讼) from authors, musicians and actors about how their works have been used to train AI systems without permission or payment. Perhaps they can agree on some sort of licensing arrangement, in which AI companies start paying copyright-holders.
It will probably be a few years before a full-length film is produced entirely by AI, but it is just a matter of time.
28. What can we learn about the film Here
A. It relates a story about youth. B. The theme of the film is reunion.
C. AI tools are employed in the film. D. It is adapted from Forrest Gump.
29. What does David think of AI's application in film making
A. Transformative. B. Destructive. C. Representative. D. Irreplaceable.
30. Why does the author mention the film Everything Everywhere All at Once
A. To show the high efficiency of AI tools.
B. To demonstrate the influence of the film.
C. To analyse a novel way of video-editing.
D. To praise the hard work behind the scenes.
31. What is the article mainly about
A. Conflicts between man and machine. B. AI's huge effects on film production.
C. Drawbacks of dependence on AI tools. D. Hot debate on the use of technology.
D
Women interpret emoji s differently to men, research suggests. Scientists say this is because these small digital pictographs can be ambiguous and be perceived differently by different people. The researchers surveyed 523 adults (49% men and 51% women) to review 24 different emojis. Each emoji --taken from Apple, Windows and WeChat platforms --represented one of the six emotional states labelled by the team: happy. disgusted, fearful, sad, surprised, and angry.
They found women were able to more accurately interpret happy, fearful, sad and angry emoji labels compared to men. No gender differences were observed for surprised or disgusted emoji, the team said. Dr Ruth Filik, associate professor in the School of Psychology at The University of Nottingham, said: “What I found most interesting and surprising is that there are so many individual differences in how people interpret these emojis.”
“It is important to note that the results reflect how often participants labelled the emoji in the same way as the researchers. So, we should think of the results in terms of there being differences across people in how they interpret emojis, rather than some people being better at it than others. We should keep these differences in mind when using emojis in our messages.” He added.
The researchers said that stylised images of faces expressing different emotions can add both nuance as well as potential ambiguity(歧义) to message s sent via texts, emails or even social media. To understand more about how emojis are interpreted, the team recruited270 people from the UK and 253 from China, who were aged between 18 to 84 years old.
Each emoji was assigned an emotion label by the researchers, which they say may not correspond exactly with the emoji as used in real life. In addition to gender, the team also found age to play a role in how emoji are interpreted, with younger adults faring better than the older ones in matching the emoji with their assigned labels. The researchers say ambiguity of emoji s is worth further research, “especially when communicating across gender, age, or cultures”.
32. Why are emojis interpreted differently according to paragraph 1
A. Emojis are taken from different platforms.
B. People's perception on emoji s may vary differently.
C. Varied emotional states are labelled to an emoji by itself.
D. The number of women involved in the study is more than that of men.
33. Which statement would Dr Ruth Filik most likely agree with
A. Women are better at interpreting emojis than men.
B. The meaning of the emoji s should be defined by researchers.
C. We should pay attention to individual differences in interpretation when using emojis.
D. Those interpreted the emojis in the same way as the researchers have done correctly.
34. What does the word “nuance” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Difference B. Similarity C. Familiarity D. Details
35. What's the author's purpose in introducing the study
A. To introduce an interesting phenomenon of online chatting.
B. To show that different emoji s have different meanings.
C. To prove that ambiguity of emojis is determined by one's gender, age and culture.
D. To remind people to pay special attention to the ambiguity of emojis.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出最佳选项,选项中的两项为多余选项。
Emotions play a critical part in our lives and are easy to spread among people unless you know how to actually control them. In order to grow and thrive, you must learn to be emotionally intelligent. 36
Focus Your Efforts On Self-evolution
Just like you, it is completely normal for everyone else to have their own beliefs and opinions. Keeping that in mind, it's better to understand that you cannot change others, no matter how hard you try. Even if you try changing others, you could be hurting yourself in the process. 37
Try Using “I” Statements
38 Use “I” statements like “I feel miserable and heartbroken” instead of “You make me feel miserable and heartbroken.” This approach conveys your emotions effectively without aggression, showcasing emotional maturity.
39
People sometimes interact with us as if we are mind readers, especially in relationships. Your partner may expect you to understand their desires, which can be challenging. Just as you aren't a mind reader, others aren't either. You need to communicate your needs to other people, and they need to do the same with you. Share your needs with your loved ones and observe the positive changes.
Avoid Negative People
You are known by the company you keep, and this is always true. 40 If surrounded by negative people that only bring others down, then you will always feel miserable. In order to be emotionally intelligent, you must have a good and supporting company by your side. Steer clear of people who emotionally manipulate others. Whenever you feel something like that, cut ties with them immediately.
A. Express Your Needs
B. Always Be A Mind Reader
C. If surrounded by happy and motivated people, you will always be happy.
D. When upset, express your feelings openly but in a non-aggressive manner.
E. The strategy in this stressful situation is to focus on others instead of yours.
F. Taking full responsibility for your action s is how you become emotionally mature.
G. Therefore, to enhance emotional maturity, self-development is the best course of action.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文,
The peaceful little town Cherrywood Dale was made up of colorful houses, each one home to a warm-hearted family. The neighbors were the salt of the earth, always ready to lend a helping hand to one another. However, among them was an exception, an old man named Mr. Johnson, who lived alone in a small cottage.
Mr. Johnson was known for his excellent gardening skills. His gift for gardening had turned his backyard into a beautiful rose garden. However, his passionate devotion to gardening had left him with little time for personal life. His only company was his beloved roses.
Not far from Mr. Johnson's cottage lived a young couple, Tom and Emily. They were the complete opposite of Mr. Johnson ——lively and sociable, always up to something new and exciting. Their home was always filled with the sound of laughter and good cheer. They
had a young son named Charlie, who was Mr. Johnson's favorite neighbor. Charlie's infectious laughter and boundless energy brought some life to Mr. Johnson's quiet existence.
One day, Charlie decided to surprise Mr. Johnson by decorating his front yard for the upcoming Harvest Festival. He knew how much Mr. Johnson loved autumn and the changing of the leaves. Charlie enlisted the help of his parents and set to work, painting pumpkins(南瓜) and hanging decorations. They were so caught up in their creation that they ended up accidentally stepping on Mr. Johnson's prize-winning roses.
The next morning, Mr. Johnson came out of his cottage and saw the beautiful display, his face shining with delight. But his smile quickly turned into a frown when he saw the destroyed roses. He called over Tom and Emily, who were equally displeased by what had happened. They apologized sincerely, promising to replace the roses, but Mr. Johnson was unmoved. The once friendly neighbors became locked in an uneasy standoff(僵局). Charlie was heartbroken, not understanding why Mr. Johnson wouldn't accept their apology.

Dear David.
I'm thrilled to tell you that I won first prize in our school's “Capture Spring on Campus” photography competition, whose aim was to motivate students to appreciate the beauty of nature and capture unforgettable moments of spring on campus.
My winning photo was taken in front of the library, where a cherry blossom tree was blooming. Pink petals were falling gently onto the ground while students sat on the grass reading or chatting. Not only did the winning boost my confidence in pursuing photography as a hobby, but it also inspired me to embrace the hidden beauty in school.
What about the spring on your campus Looking forward to your reply.
Best regards,
Li Hua
读后续写:
Then one afternoon, Emily decided to make the first move. She went to a local flower shop and asked around for the roses that looked like Mr. Johnson's. Immediately she managed to replace the destroyed roses and tended the delicate flowers cautiously with the help of Tom and Charlie. Seeing the thoughtful acts, Mr.Johnson finally realized that he overreacted that day and made an apology for his misbehavior. However, what the family cared most was whether what they did could make for his loss and cheered him up.
Mr. Johnson was moved by the three's sincere understanding. He made up his mind to take care of the roses together with the family. As the Harvest Festival approached, the flowers unfolded smiles gradually, which revived his garden. Mr.Johnson expressed how he loved the works of art Charlie created. He even invited the whole family to dinner in his cottage where laughter and happiness had never existed before. The roses, though once destroyed, brought Mr. Johnson something more precious—kindness and genuineness as well as an open heart.

W: Anna's only been here a year. I'm sure Jane will get the post. She's been here five years. She's also well liked
M: Rachel is too, but she's fairly new....
W: Perhaps she and Anna will be promoted next time.
(Text 2)
M: Did you see that new play at the Odeon Theater
W: I saw about half of it. It was so boring and strange. I got up and left
M: If I didn't know better, I'd say we saw different plays.
(Text 3)
W: Which hotel shall we book
M: Well, the Westgate's close to us but it is too expensive.
W: But the Laurel's far away from the office. And we stopped using the Crown.
M: So let's choose the nearest one.
(Text 4)
M:Sam got a car, so he'll be able to pick you up to the evening show.
W:Oh, that would be good. I don't like taking the bus at night, and walking seems a little dangerous.
(Text 5)
M: Excuse me. I'm looking for a textbook by Professor Herrick for the science course.
W: Let me check... I'm sorry, it's sold out
(Text 6)
W: You haven't forgotten Sylvia's party tonight, have you
M: Of course not. There's plenty of time.
W:No, there isn't. The invitation says drinks are at 7:30 and it's 7:00 now. Even if we hurry we'll never get there on time. M: Relax. I've already told Sylvia we won't be there for drinks. Dinner won't start before ten and we only need to arrive half an hour before that, so there's no hurry.
W. I know, but we have to pick up our children from your parents' house on the way.
M: Yeah. Even so, there is no need to start right away.
(Text 7)
W:My sister Lisa finally got married with Henry last month.
M: Really That's really great news. Well, how long have they been seeing each other
W: Oh, it's been over one year. The funny part is how it happened.
M: Yeah
W: Listen. They were on holiday and one night while they were sitting on the ship, looking at the stars...
M: Ah,… let me guess. He pulled out a ring and asked her to marry him
W: No. The other way around. She asked him. Of course he immediately said "Yes". They are going to France for their honeymoon.
(Text 8)
M: Hi, Susan. This is Mike. Listen, could you do me a favor
W: Well, I'll try. What is it
M:I have an appointment with a new customer this afternoon, but I can't make it. Could you do it for me My sister Lily who lives in England has come to see me and I will pick her up at the airport, I really have to be out of the office this afternoon.
W: Well, in that case, of course I'll be happy to take over for you. I'll ask Rebecca to make a report and tell you how it goes.
M: That's OK. Thank you.
(Text 9)
M:Can I help you
W: Yes. My politics teacher asked us to read a book called Toward the World. According to the database, the book is in the library But I haven't been able to find it.
M: Let me see. Oh yes. Your professor has placed this book on reserve. That means, you can not find it on the shelves in its usual place. You need to go to a special room called the reserve room.
W:I'm sorry-I still don't understand what you mean by "on reserve".
M:When a book is on reserve, a student can go to the reserve room and ask the reserve librarian for the book. The student can have the book for a few hours, and he or she must read it in the library during that time. That way, the book stays in the library, and all the students can read it.
W: OK. Thank you. I understand now. By the way, how can I go to the reserve room
M: It's on the fourth floor, between the reading room and the study room. You'd better go up by the stairs, as the lift is under repair.
W: OK. Thank you.
(Text 10)
W: Hi. Well, it's great to see you all. When I suggested this class, they said women don't need a carpentry class. But when I saw it would cost six-month wages to employ someone to fix my kitchen cupboards, I decided to learn. That was 18 months ago. I've spent the past two months working on a desk, which I finished last week, I've decided to put it in the sitting room or perhaps the hall, although actually, my original plan was to use it in my bedroom, but now it looks so good that I don't want to hide it away! So, you see it's not too difficult.
First of all, I want to say a bit about equipment. Usually it's a good idea to buy the best quality you can afford. That doesn't mean you have to get lots of expensive electric tools. Hand tools are fine, they're slower of course, but you have more control at a slower speed. However, if you aren't very strong, the power of electric tools can be a real help.
The next point is, don't expect to make anything very big or difficult for the first few months at least. You need to develop your skills fairly slowly, If you don't, you'll make furniture which doesn't work well.
Now imagine you want to put up a shelf in the bathroom. Think carefully about what you'll need, and then we'll look at the lists together and see what you've forgotten! OK
