The more you meditate and achieve mindfulness, the better you’ll feel. There are many free meditation apps that offer guided sessions, calming playlists.
Headspace
This app is simple and approachable for meditation beginners. Most of the free sessions focus on teaching the users how to meditate and easing them into the practice, while also acknowledging that meditation can be difficult. Yet to get into the really good stuff, you need to pay for the full membership.
Insight Timer
The app offers a multitude of meditation bells and calming musical notes during self-guided meditations. Featuring a variety of professional instructors and courses, Insight Timer also offers more contents for free users than other apps. Although the free option is extensive, the premium version(高级版)offers courses, downloadable meditations, night mode, and daily insights.
Meditation Studio
The app groups all its free meditations together, so it’s easy to use it without paying. These meditations run from 5 to 30 minutes and are available for download, a feature that other apps typically reserve for premium members. The number of free contents, however, is limited and included mostly basics. The design of the app is also relatively plain.
Breethe: Meditation & Sleep
A nice feature about Breethe is the calming background music that plays while the app is open, even without opening a meditation or music. Breethe offers a lot of sleep contents, including visualizations and bedtime stories. The app does offer a few 7-day courses for free, but the majority (1,000-plus meditations)is locked behind the paywall.

Aspirin has long been believed to help prevent heart attacks and strokes (中风). Some studies have shown that it also has a protective effect against certain types of cancer. As a result, some people religiously pop a low-dose(低剂量的)aspirin after breakfast every day (never take one on an empty stomach). But now its status as a wonder drug has come into question, following a meta-analysis of trial evidence.
A meta-analysis reviews the results of a large number of trials and can therefore come to more certain conclusions. This latest review was published this May in The Journal of the American Medical Association. It focused on the connect ion between aspirin use and cardiovascular (心血管的)and bleeding events. It found that the well-known risk that aspirin can cause internal bleeding is as great as the benefits of preventing heart attacks and strokes. In some cases, the risk even outweighs the benefits.
Aspirin thins the blood, thus helping to prevent blood clots(血栓). For his reason, it is a good drug for protecting people who have already had a heart attack or stroke from having another. However, the 164,225 people in these trials had no history of cardiovascular disease. They were monitored for an average of six years, during which time they took a daily aspirin or placebo(安慰剂). Among those who took aspirin, there were about 11% fewer heart attacks and strokes but 43%higher likelihood of a major bleeding episode in the stomach, brain or intestine (肠道).
Dr Sean Zheng, a cardiology(心脏病学)researcher at King’s College London, said that taking a daily aspirin couldn’t be recommended for healthy people. But there might still be a case for people with a higher risk of a heart attack or stroke, he added. However, it would be important to consider the bleeding risk.
“Aspirin use requires discussion between the patient and their physician, with the knowledge that any small potential cardiovascular benefits are weighed up against the real risk of severe bleeding.” he said.
The findings reflect the average likelihood of bleeds or heart attacks among the patients in all the trials. There will be people among them who would be better off taking aspirin and those who will be worse. It’s yet another situation where we need to weigh up our individual risk and benefit —maybe with the help of an understanding GP.
24. Which of the following is NOT a reason why some people take an aspirin every day
A. They want to lower their risk of having a heart attack
B. They hope to protect themselves against some cancers
C. They want to ensure they don’t have a sick stomach
D. They aim to make sure they won’t suffer another stroke
25. What can be concluded from the recent meta-analysis
A. That aspirin does more harm than good to the human body
B. That aspirin frequently causes internal bleeding because it thins the blood
C. That previous research into the effects of aspirin on the human body was unreliable.
D. That taking aspirin is not worth the risk or those with no history of heart tacks or strokes.
26. What should people do before taking aspirin, according to the article
A. To have a thorough physical examination.
B. To ask for others’ opinions on the internet.
C. To read the findings of new studies on aspirin.
D. To talk with a doctor familiar with their condition.
27. The article was probably written by ________.
A. the director of a hospital
B. a public health journalist
C. the CEO of a medical company
D. a representative for an insurance company
C
The steam engine, electric lighting, refrigeration. If you’re wondering what these things have in common, they’re examples of transformative technologies that lifted worker productivity. Does generative AI belong on that list
Hardly a day passes without some news of the great things that so-called large language models (LLMs)can do—from writing academic papers to designing buildings—along with projections on how many jobs will be wipe d out as companies figure out ways to apply the new technology. But economists are divided on whether the likes of Open AI’s Chat GPT or Google’s Bard have the potential to jump-start productivity growth worldwide.
Researchers in a consulting firm project AI will deliver $4.4 trillion in economic benefits annually to the global economy, equal to 4.4% of global output in 2022. Harvard professor Neeley likens the birth of generative AI to the arrival of the Internet. “It is exactly that moment we are facing again—that vital moment that forever changes how we work, how we interact with one another, how we think, how we produce. We are at that moment again.”
There are plenty of reasons to be skeptical, though. Robert Gordon, a professor at Northwestern University and author of The Rise and Fall of American Growth, argues that the Internet and AI haven’t been as revolutionary as what economists call general-purpose technologies, such as electricity.
Worries about AI replacing workers have been at the center of a labor dispute in Hollywood writers and actors. A survey by Microsoft found that 49% of the people say they’re worried AI will replace their jobs.
On the flip side, blue-collar workers could benefit. “It won’t change blue-collar work, but it will change who can get out of blue-collar work and get into better jobs,” an economic historian at Cornell University says, “We are living through one of those turning point s in human history.”
28. Why does the author mention Open AI’s Chat GPT and Google’s Bard
A. To introduce a debate. B. To define a concept.
C. To make a prediction. D. To explain a technology.
29. What does the underlined word “likens” mean in paragraph 3
A. contributes. B. compares.
C. attaches. D. changes.
30. What can we know about Robert Gordon
A. He is in favor of AI.
B. He suspects AI’s revolutionary role.
C. He is an economist and author.
D. He acts as an electricity professor.
31. What does the economic historian think about blue-collar work in the AI-era
A. Doubtful. B. Worrying.
C. Fascinating. D. Promising.
D
High school students perform better on tests if they are in a classroom with a view of a green space, instead of a windowless room or a room with a view of built-up space, according to research from the University of Illinois Department of Landscape Architecture.
“It is the first to show a relationship between studying with a green view and students’ performance.” said William Sullivan, head of the research team. “It’s a substantial finding that if you have a green view outside your window, you’ll do better on tests.” Sullivan hopes the results of their research will lead to some changes. “Changes in school design, for example, would be a much better thing than any of the things we spend money on in secondary education today,” Sullivan said.
The research included 94 students at five central Illinois high schools. Students were randomly assigned to one of three kinds of classrooms — windowless, with a window looking out onto built-up space, or with a window looking out onto green space. Each kind of classroom had almost the same size and layout. The students took part in one-on-one experiments in which they did 30 minutes of activities that included a proofreading(勘校)exercise, a speech and a math exercise. Following the activities the students were given an attention test which asked them to repeat a series of numbers.
The findings: Students did better on both study activities and the attention test if they were in a classroom with a green view, Sullivan said.
The researchers suggest their findings can help planners and policymakers improve students’ health and learning. For example, planners can choose places for new schools that already have trees, or they can plant many trees on the site; architects can design classroom windows so they look onto green spaces.
32. What did the study find out about high school students
A. They like to have green plants in their classrooms.
B. They will get better grades when studying in different classrooms.
C. Changes in school design will influence their attitudes towards teachers.
D. A green view through a classroom window can improve their performance.
33. What does the underlined word “substantial” in paragraph 2mean
A. Early. B. Important.
C. Useless. D. Possible.
34. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. How the study was carried out.
B. The result of the study.
C. Why the study was different.
D. The purpose of the study.
35. What do the researchers think of the study
A. It has drawn public attention to education.
B. It can play a guiding role in school planning.
C. It has encouraged students to get close to nature.
D. It needs more support from high school teachers.

When Ken was in high school, he did well and had a strong sense of accomplishment. However, when he was in college, his grades were not so outstanding among academically gifted students much like himself, if not better.
Often he feels depressed and is withdrawing from people and activities. 36
The literature generally has found that many of us tend to let our self-worth be contingent upon external events (such as academics and physical attractiveness). 37 As a result, our feelings about ourselves can end up being in the hands of others.
Obviously, we all want to experience things that make us feel good. But when we have contingent self-worth, we might engage in activities that make us feel worthy while avoiding activities that make us feel unworthy. 38 Instead of working hard to meet our goals, we’ll try to avoid failure. And if we do fail one day, we might abandon our goals, lose motivation, or make excuses to help ourselves feel better.
39 If our self-worth is contingent upon being successful at work, we might only choose jobs that are easy. That way we never fail and ensure that we always know that we are worthy. Or, maybe we only think we’re worthy if we weigh less than 130 pounds. We might under eat or engage in unhealthy eating practices just to make sure that we feel good.
Self-worth is an important psychological construct that affects not only how we think about ourselves but it also has an impact on our psychological health and functioning. So, give up the idea of seeking approval from others. 40 Doing so reminds us to be fully aware of who we are.
A. That may pose potential dangers.
B. Unfortunately, he is no exception.
C. When our self-worth depends on those, it’s unstable.
D. Let’s cite some examples to further demonstrate that.
E. Let’s dive into the cause to learn more about self-worth.
F. Actually, he’s always been labeled as “other people’s child”.
G. Instead, learn to base your self-worth on internal contingencies like virtues and faiths.

第二节:读后续写
A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat. It was a dirty-looking restaurant. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she always had a sweet smile. After the meal, she paid with a one hundred dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change, but the old lady had slipped right out of the door by the time she came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed something written on the napkin, “You don’t owe me anything. Someone once helped me out the way I’m helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you.” Under the napkin were four more $100 bills. Totally touched, she failed to utter a single word, tears blurring her eyes.
There were tables to clear and people to serve, but the pregnant waitress felt a rush of warmth. That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard. She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, “Everything is going to be all right”. It is then that the waitress decided to pass the chain of love on.

听力录音稿
(Text 1)
W: Do you want to try an Indian restaurant tonight
M: OK. I’ve never had Indian food before, so you’ll have to choose the place.
W: I’ve never had it before either.
M: Let’s check out the reviews online.
(Text 2)
W: What success did you achieve
M: I don’t know if it matters to someone or not, but passing the entrance exam to university was a huge success for me. I’d been in university for four years before I graduated two years ago.
(Text 3)
M: Are you heading off to school now You’d better bring an umbrella.
W: An umbrella But dad, there isn’t a single cloud in the sky.
M: Right now, yeah. But the forecast is for rain. It’s supposed to start raining around lunchtime.
(Text 4)
W: Welcome sir, how can I help you
M: I’m looking for gym wear to participate in the school competition.
W: The gym wear is in the right section. We have everything which is in trend.
(Text 5)
W: Where did the idea of building it come from
M: I saw a similar one when I was staying in a cottage with my relatives back in my home country.
W: And was building this houseboat difficult
M: Not really, after a life designing city buildings!
(Text 6)
W: I’m trying to access a website for work, but I’m not having any luck.
M: Has the Wi-fi stopped working again, maybe
W: It can’t be that because I just checked my emails, and there was no problem there.
M: Have you changed your password or something
W: No. And I’m sure it’s right because I wrote it down when I created it.
M: Let me have a look. I know what’s wrong! It’s your anti-virus programme. You need to change the settings to allow this page to open.
(Text 7)
M: Let’s start the day with some breakfast! I’m in the mood for French toast.
W: I’m sorry. I have no idea what that is.
M: It’s not complicated at all. First, you mix two eggs and some milk together in a bowl. Then, you put the bread in the mixture, then take it out and fry it in a pan. Finally, cover it with butter.
W: That does sound fantastic, but we don’t have much time today. How about a refreshing yogurt bowl instead
M: Maybe we should just head to the breakfast shop down the street. I could really go for some cake.
W: That sounds good. I’m in the mood for a sandwich and some apple juice.
M: I completely forgot about drinks. I would love to have some black tea. We can always save the French toast for another occasion.
(Text 8)
W: We have tickets for the new modern art exhibition. You’ve been, haven’t you
M: Yes! I went to the preview.
W: And what did you think
M: There were some clever works by a young sculptor — lots of animals, like lions.
W: What about paintings I usually like them because I’m into painting.
M: There was a collection of some paintings of the artists themselves in different styles. Some are more impressive than others; I have to say. I actually found a fantastic exhibit outside on the museum grounds. There’s a statue of my favorite conductor. It looks so real.
W: That sounds interesting. Were there any interactive exhibits
M: Actually, yes! One of the activities allowed visitors to participate in creating their own paintings and designs. It was great to see everyone’s creativity.
W: That sounds like a fun way to engage visitors and make the exhibition more interactive.

M: I wish you liked the photos. As you can see, my job is quite interesting. I enjoy teaching here at the university, but it’s nice to travel, too.
W: In one of your photos, I see that you’re the only outsider there. How do you get people to allow you into their lives like that
M: Well, the most important thing is to make friends with them. Basically, if the local people do it, I do it, too. I eat the same foods as the local people eat.
W: But what if the food is very strange to you
M: Well, sometimes it is something new to me, but other people eat it, so I can eat it, too! I won’t avoid it.
W: What kinds of unusual foods have you eaten
M: Oh, a lot of things! Honey ants, for example. They have a sweet taste.
W: Ants You mean you eat insects
M: Yes, they’re delicious!

M: Hello, everyone. I am the Director of Studies here at Language International. Now, let’s see the weekly timetable. The lessons begin every weekday at nine a.m. The first class every Monday is grammar practice, followed at nine forty-five by a visit to the language lab. There is a break from ten thirty to eleven, and then you have a double lesson of speaking skills. Tuesday morning begins with presentation skills. This is important, as you will each give a presentation at the end of the course to your class. At nine forty-five you’ll have a reading skills lesson and after the break, vocabulary development. In the afternoon, starting at one thirty, you’ll have the library lesson. You can read, watch a video or practice grammar in the library. On Wednesday morning you have listening skills, where you’ll listen to the news on the radio and discuss what’s going on. Thursday begins with pronunciation, then after the break is grammar practice once again. Finally on Friday morning in the first lesson you will practice writing skills, followed by a lesson in the computer room. OK. That’s all about the timetable.
