(2024陕西汉中期中校际联考)
If you think English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a new language
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter density(灰质密度). This is the area of the brain which processes(加工)information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the younger people learn a second language, the greater the effect is.
A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London (UCL), took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals(能说两种语言的人)” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was.
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible,” he said. “You are actually going beyond the language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings matched a study of native Italian speakers who had learnt English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.

B.To suggest language learning is also a kind of physical labor.
C.To prove that one needs more resources when he/she is learning a language.
D.To tell us that learning a language can train your brain effectively.
2.What can we know from the scientific findings
A.The ability of learning a second language is changing all the time.
B.The earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density is.
C.The experience of learning a second language has a bad effect on the brain.
D.There is no difference between a later second language learner and one without a second language.
3.What does the author try to tell us in the last two paragraphs
A.Early learning of a second language helps in studying other subjects.
B.Learning a second language is the same as studying maths.
C.Italian is the best choice for you to learn as a second language.
D.You'd better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language.
4.What is mainly talked about in this passage

Ⅳ.七选五
(2024黑龙江齐齐哈尔五校联考)
If you are like most international students, you are probably pretty comfortable with reading and writing in English. 1 Below are some tips on helping you improve your conversational skills.
Make friends with native students. Many international students end up making friends with a lot of, or only other international students instead of native speakers. 2 In fact, hanging out with natives not only naturally pushes you to improve your spoken English, but also helps you pick up cultural and social information. So you should contact them as much as possible.
Learn from native friends. Tell your native friends that you are trying to improve your listening and speaking skills, and would like them to help you. If you pronounce a word incorrectly, or misuse an idiom, you ask them to remind you. 3
Increase your knowledge. 4 If you have been exposed to topics that are likely to be discussed in conversation, you have a much better chance of understanding people when they talk, and of being able to express yourself well.
5 If you have to explain something to someone, you are eager to pronounce everything as well as you can to explain yourself. Finally, this becomes a good habit. Many people have asked me how I learned to speak English fluently, and I owe most of it to my years of being a math teacher in college.
A.If possible, become a teacher at your school.
B.Explaining everything in a different way counts.
C.You are likely to make great progress in this way.
D.It's a win-win opportunity for international students.
E.It has a bad impact on improving your spoken English.
F.Keep up with the latest news and watch popular shows and movies.
G.However, you may come across many difficulties with listening and speaking.

But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was.”可知,双语者大脑中的灰质密度高于没有学第二语言的人,但一个人在掌握一门新语言之前等待的时间越长,差异就越小。由此可推知,学习第二语言会增加灰质密度,而且越早学习,效果就越好,越晚学习,灰质密度的变化就越小。故选B。
3.A 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段第一句可知,威尔士大学的Dylan Vaughan Jones教授研究双语与数学技能之间的联系。根据他说的话“Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(拥有两种语言可以给你打开两扇世界之窗,让大脑更加灵活)”和“You are actually going beyond the language and have a better understanding of different ideas.(实际上,你正在超越语言,更好地理解不同的想法。)”可推知,学习第二门语言的好处不单单局限于语言,它让我们的大脑更加灵活,有助于学习其他学科,故选A。
