A Letter from Willa Cather to President Tomas Masaryk
Honored sir,
Your letter, sent to me through your Legation at Washington, confers upon me great honor and gives me great pleasure. I am glad to have carried a message from the
Bohemian (波希米亚) neighbors, whom I grew up with, to their home country of the Czech Republic. I have just returned to New York, where I had the pleasure of taking Annie Pavelka, the living “Antonia” in my book My Antonia, and six of her children to the first screening of A Lost Lady. I have the good fortune to preserve relations with most of my characters. “Antonia” and her splendid children are flesh and blood realities. Every time I go back to them, I feel how much more interesting and lovable they are than my picture of them. I wish I could present them to you in person.
I regret that I cannot satisfactorily meet your kind request for biographical (传记的) material. I avoid biographers, asking them to wait until I get my work further along. My first novel was published in 1912, and a period of twelve years is hardly long enough for a writer to find the form best suited for writing. I was not young when I began to write, and though living is a good preparation for writing, I do need more time to acquire a simple and modest way of presenting my work, however well I know what I wish to present.
I am able to send you a very good photograph taken recently. I enclose a short biographical account which my publishers use for publicity purposes, and some casual reviews. Biographies usually begin to come along just about the time a writer has no more to say, and Ido not feel that time has yet come to me.
I beg you, President Masaryk, to believe in my grateful appreciation of your letter.
Respectfully yours,
Willa Cather

In Takoma Park, Maryland, in suburban Washington, people, adults or students, lined up at a pay phone outside a restaurant several times a week.
“Once I put the phone out there, it just took off,” said David Schulman, a Takoma Park violinist who created the Bird Calls Phone. Listeners push 1 to hear a yellow-crowned night heron (夜鹭), 7 to hear a pileated (红冠) woodpecker’s call and 9 for the distinct scream of a red-tailed hawk. Instructions about how to use the phone are in three languages: English, Spanish and Amharic — a reflection of Takoma Park’s Ethiopian community. In all, 10 birds native to the Takoma Park area are featured.
In addition to being fun, listening to Bird songs can reduce stress and anxiety, studies show. Even hearing recordings of birds can relieve negative emotions.
After noticing an abandoned, nonworking pay phone in town, Schulman wondered if he could turn it into something appealing. He said, “I really like the old technology of just picking up a receiver, pressing one button and having something happen.” Schulman thought bringing birds sounds to the abandoned phone was a way to add a bit of nature to the neighborhood.
Takoma Park city officials agreed, and they budgeted $5, 000 to complete the project. Schulman reached out to The McCaulay Library in Ithaca, New York, which agreed to send him a few dozen recordings of native birds. He then managed to gain the help of software engineer and artist Branden Hall to rewire the phone to play different bird calls. Schulman said he persuaded several of his friends to record short descriptions of each bird to go with the calls.
“One thing I like about the Bird Calls Phone is that it’s the opposite of a loud broadcast,” Schulman said. “Only one person can listen at a time, and each person will take away their own unique experience.”
20.What will listeners hear if they press buttons on the pay phone
A.The calls of native birds. B.Songs in different languages.
C.Descriptions of local creatures. D.Instructions on reducing stress.
21.Which of the following best describes David Schulman
A.Observant and nature-loving. B.Diligent and easy-going.
C.Serious and public-spirited. D.Ambitious and kind-hearted.
22.What can be inferred about the project
A.It encourages art appreciation. B.It presents the harmony among birds.
C.It turns loud broadcasts into private phones. D.It receives broad support from the community.
23.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.A Violinist Specializes in Ecology B.Pick up the Phone, Hear Bird songs
C.Close to Nature, Far From Depression D.Turn Trash into Treasure in Washington
【答案】20.A 21.A 22.D 23.B
根据第二段中“Listeners push 1 to hear a yellow-crowned night heron (夜鹭), 7 to hear a pileated (红冠) woodpecker’s call and 9 for the distinct scream of a red-tailed hawk.(听众按1键听黄冠夜鹭的叫声,按7键听红冠啄木鸟的叫声,按9键听红尾鹰的独特叫声)”和“In all, 10 birds native to the Takoma Park area are featured.(总共有10种生活在塔科马帕克地区的鸟类)”可知,如果听众按下公用电话的按钮,他们会听到本地鸟类的叫声。故选A项。
根据第四段中“After noticing an abandoned, nonworking pay phone in town, Schulman wondered if he could turn it into something appealing.(在注意到镇上一个废弃的、不能使用的付费电话后,舒尔曼想知道他是否可以把它变成一个吸引人的东西)”和“Schulman thought bringing birds sounds to the abandoned phone was a way to add a bit of nature to the neighborhood.(舒尔曼认为,把鸟的声音带到废弃的电话里是一种为社区增添自然气息的方式)”可知,David Schulman注意到废弃的公用电话,并把它变成“鸟鸣电话”,让人们可以听到当地鸟类的叫声,为社区增添了自然气息。 故选A项。
根据第五段中“Takoma Park city officials agreed, and they budgeted $5, 000 to complete the project. Schulman reached out to The McCaulay Library in Ithaca, New York, which agreed to send him a few dozen recordings of native birds. He then managed to gain the help of software engineer and artist Branden Hall to rewire the phone to play different bird calls. Schulman said he persuaded several of his friends to record short descriptions of each bird to go with the calls.(塔科马帕克的官员同意了,他们预算了5000美元来完成这个项目。
通读全文,结合第二段中“Listeners push 1 to hear a yellow-crowned night heron (夜鹭), 7 to hear a pileated (红冠) woodpecker’s call and 9 for the distinct scream of a red-tailed hawk. Instructions about how to use the phone are in three languages: English, Spanish and Amharic — a reflection of Takoma Park’s Ethiopian community. In all, 10 birds native to the Takoma Park area are featured.(听众按1来听黄冠夜鹭,按7来听红冠啄木鸟的叫声,按9来听红尾鹰的独特叫声。手机的使用说明有三种语言:英语、西班牙语和阿姆哈拉语——反映了塔科马帕克的埃塞俄比亚社区。总共有10种生活在塔科马帕克地区的鸟类)”可知,文章报道了音乐家David Schulman创作了“鸟鸣电话”,让人们可以通过电话听到夜鹭、红冠啄木鸟和红尾鹰等10种当地鸟类的叫声,,为社区增添了自然气息。由此推知,“Pick up the Phone, Hear Bird songs(拿起电话,听鸟儿的歌声)”是文章最佳标题。故选B项。
C
We often think about relationships on a scale from positive to negative. We are drawn to loving family members, caring classmates and supportive mentors. We do our best to avoid the cruel uncle, the playground bully and the jerk boss.
But the most harmful relationships aren’t the purely negative ones. They’re the ones that are a mix of positive and negative. We often call them frenemies, supposed friends who sometimes help you and sometimes hurt you. But it’s not just friends. It’s the in-laws who volunteer to watch your kids but devalue your parenting. The manager who praises your work but denies you a promotion.
Groundbreaking research led by the psychologists Bert Uchino and Julianne Holt-Lunstad shows that ambivalent (矛盾情绪的) relationships can be damaging to your health — even more than purely negative relationships.
Even a single ambivalent interaction can cause harm. In one experiment, people talked about controversial (具有争议性的) topics in front of a friend who offered feedback. The researchers had randomly assigned the friend to give ambivalent or negative comments. Receiving mixed feedback caused higher blood pressure than pure criticism. “I would have gone about the topic differently, but you’re doing fine” proved to be more distressing than “I totally disagree with everything you’ve said.”
The evidence that ambivalent relationships can be bad for us is obvious, but the reasons can be harder to read — just like the relationships themselves.
One reason is that ambivalent relationships are unpredictable. With a clear enemy, you put up a shield when you cross paths. With a frenemy, you never know whether Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde is going to show up. Feeling unsure can break the body’s calming system and activate a fight-or-flight response. It’s unsettling to hope for a hug while also preparing for a likely quarrel.
Another factor is that unpleasant interactions are more painful in an ambivalent relationship. It’s more distressing to be let down by people you like sometimes than by people you dislike all the time. When someone stabs you in the back, it stings more if he’s been friendly to your face.
24.Which of the following can be considered as a frenemy
A.Your neighbor’s kid who advises you to study hard but kill his own time.
B.Your classmate who admires your hard work at first, but doubts your intelligence later.
C.Your mother’s friend who encourages you to spend more time on homework but less on smart phones.
D.Your father’s colleague who proposes you to do a reasonable amount of homework while ensuring enough sleep.
25.What does the underlined word “distressing” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Upsetting. B.Satisfying. C.Inspiring. D.Confusing.
26.Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage
A.The negative impact of ambivalent interactions is strong.
B.Ambivalent relationships have a long-lasting effect on your well-being.
C.The common cause of high blood pressure is ambivalent relationship.
D.Interactions in ambivalent relationships are more painful than those in negative ones.
27.What is the passage mainly about
A.Negative relationships are bad for health.
B.Ambivalent relationships are unpredictable.
C.Ambivalent Relationships are the most harmful.
D.Positive relationships are better than negative ones.
【答案】24.B 25.A 26.A 27.C
根据第二段中“They’re the ones that are a mix of positive and negative. We often call them frenemies, supposed friends who sometimes help you and sometimes hurt you. But it’s not just friends. It’s the in-laws who volunteer to watch your kids but devalue your parenting. The manager who praises your work but denies you a promotion. (它们是积极和消极的混合体。我们经常称它们为亦敌亦友,所谓的朋友有时帮助你,有时伤害你。但这不仅仅是朋友。是姻亲自愿照顾你的孩子,却贬低了你的育儿价值。那个赞扬你工作却拒绝提拔你的经理)”可知,“亦敌亦友”的人有时候帮助你,有时候伤害你,B“Your classmate who admires your hard work at first, but doubts your intelligence later. (你的同学,一开始钦佩你的勤奋,但后来怀疑你的智力。)”符合这一表述。故选B项。
25.词句猜测题。根据第四段中“Receiving mixed feedback caused higher blood pressure than pure criticism. “I would have gone about the topic differently, but you’re doing fine” proved to be more distressing than “I totally disagree with everything you’ve said.”(接受褒贬不一的反馈比接受纯粹的批评更容易导致高血压。事实证明,“我本来可以换个方式来讨论这个话题,但你做得很好”比“我完全不同意你所说的一切”更distressing)”可知,“我本来可以换个方式来讨论这个话题,但你做得很好”是褒贬不一的反馈,即“亦敌亦友”,与纯粹的批评“我完全不同意你所说的一切”相比,它会导致人更高的血压,让人感到苦恼,划线词意为“令人苦恼的(Upsetting)”。故选A项。
根据第三段“Groundbreaking research led by the psychologists Bert Uchino and Julianne Holt-Lunstad shows that ambivalent (矛盾情绪的) relationships can be damaging to your health — even more than purely negative relationships. (心理学家Bert Uchino和Julianne Holt-Lunstad领导的开创性研究表明,矛盾的关系会对你的健康造成损害,甚至比纯粹的负面关系更严重)”以及第四段“Even a single ambivalent interaction can cause harm. In one experiment, people talked about controversial (具有争议性的) topics in front of a friend who offered feedback. The researchers had randomly assigned the friend to give ambivalent or negative comments. Receiving mixed feedback caused higher blood pressure than pure criticism. “I would have gone about the topic differently, but you’re doing fine” proved to be more distressing than “I totally disagree with everything you’ve said.””(即使是一个矛盾的相互作用也会造成伤害。 故选A项。
根据第二段中“But the most harmful relationships aren’t the purely negative ones. They’re the ones that are a mix of positive and negative. (但最有害的关系并不是纯粹的消极关系。它们是积极和消极的混合体友)”和第三段“Groundbreaking research led by the psychologists Bert Uchino and Julianne Holt-Lunstad shows that ambivalent (矛盾情绪的) relationships can be damaging to your health — even more than purely negative relationships. (心理学家Bert Uchino和Julianne Holt-Lunstad领导的开创性研究表明,矛盾的关系会对你的健康造成损害,甚至比纯粹的负面关系更严重)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讲述的是矛盾的关系才是最有害的,C“矛盾的关系是最有害的”符合文意。故选C项。
三、翻译
28.Not until Mary arrived home did she realize she had left the key in her office.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
29.The telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
结合语境可知本句陈述事实,故时态用一般现在时,且主语为The telephone,故谓语用第三人称单数形式allows,allow sb. to do sth. beyond的宾语our own lives“我们的生活”。
30.In order to save this species from extinction, the Chinese government placed it under national protection.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

31.I’m also reminded of the danger they are in.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

32.This is why we’re here — to observe Tibetan antelopes.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

My fellow students,
In a bid to raise our awareness of volunteer service, an activity themed “Volunteers to Serve the Community” is scheduled to be held next week.
All the participants will be divided into two groups, who are to complete two tasks, namely cleaning public facilities and visiting elderly people, under the instructions of the local community directors. Volunteer service, as its name suggests, means making contributions to the world with nothing in return. It improves community cohesion and even contributes to the development of the whole society. Meanwhile, we students can enhance the team spirit, interpersonal skills and organizational ability, by actively engaging in volunteer work.
Therefore, volunteer service is of great significance to oneself and society. I appeal to every one of you to get passionately involved in this activity.

A.It encourages art appreciation. B.It presents the harmony among birds.
C.It turns loud broadcasts into private phones. D.It receives broad support from the community.
23.What can be a suitable title for the text
