When I was six years old, Grandpa sent me into the woods to gather pecans (山核桃). Pecan picking was quite difficult for me and my little basket was only half full. Just then, something caught my eyes. A large squirrel (松鼠) was a few feet away. I watched as he picked up a pecan, hurried to a tree and disappeared in a large hole in the tree. A moment later, he jumped out and climbed down to the ground to pick up another nut. Once again, he took the pecan back to his hiding place.
I ran to the tree and looked into the hole. It was filled with pecans! Golden pecans were right there for taking. I scooped (抱起) all of them into my basket. Now it was full! I was so proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all the pecans. He looked into the basket and said, “Well, how did you find so many ” I told him the truth.
Grandpa congratulated me on how smart I’d been in observing (观察) the squirrel and his habits. Then he did something that surprised me. He handed the basket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders.
“That squirrel worked very hard to gather his winter supply of food,” he said, “Now that all of his pecans are gone, don’t you think that little squirrel will survive the cold winter ”
“I didn’t think about that.” I said.
“I know,” Grandpa said, “But a good person should never take advantage of someone else’s hard work.”
I understood. After supper, I did the right thing.

One night, John came into the stable, calling, “Wake up. Beauty!”
He put my saddle and bridle on and rode up to the front door of the house. The Squire was there.
“John,” he said, “Mrs Gordon is very ill. Ride to the doctor’s and give him this note.”
“Now, Beauty, do your best.” said John. I went as fast as possible. When we arrived at Dr White’s house, John told him: “Mrs Gordon is very ill. Squire Gordon thinks she is going to die Please go to her immediately.” “Yes,” said the doctor, “but my son has my horse. Can I have yours ” he asked.

Every morning you get up, wash your face, brush your teeth, eat breakfast and get ready for your day. The daily actions are so common that you don’t think about them much. But what if you were in space
When astronauts (宇航员) are in space, they eat, sleep, wash, work and play. They do the same things as us, but they do them differently.
On Earth, we put food on a plate and water in a glass. Gravity (引力) holds the food down and keeps the water in the glass. But in space, there is almost no gravity. So food can move slowly in the air, and astronauts must eat and drink carefully. They have special plates so that their food doesn’t float away. They use special bags for drinks so that the drink stays inside.
Sleeping is very difficult in space. Some astronauts like to move in the air, but most like to be in a sleeping bag. They tie the bags to a wall so that they don’t fly in the air at night. The sun rises and sets so often that the astronauts use a clock or music to wake them up.
Exercise is very important in space. On Earth, your legs carry your body, but in space, astronauts fly in the air, so they do not use their legs. This is very bad for their legs. So they must exercise for thirty minutes every day. They often use an exercise bicycle for this.
After a day’s work, astronauts relax. They may listen to music, read, watch films, play games, or talk to their friends and families on radio. The most popular pastime is looking out of the window, looking at the space and watching the earth.

For several years, Americans have enjoyed teleshopping — watching TV and buying things by phone. Now, teleshopping is starting in Europe. In a number of European countries, people can turn on their TVs and shop for clothes, jewelry, food, toys and many other things.
Teleshopping is becoming popular in Sweden. For example, the biggest Swedish teleshopping company sells different kinds of things on TV in 15 European countries, and in one year it made $100 million. In France, there are two teleshopping channels (频道), and the French spend $20 million a year buying things through those channels. In Germany, until last year, teleshopping was on one channel for one hour every day. Then the government allowed more teleshopping. Other channels can now open for telebusiness, including teleshopping, because it allows people to do their shopping without leaving their homes. With all the problems of traffic in the cities, this is an important reason to allow more teleshopping.
But at the same time, other Europeans do not like this new way of shopping. They call teleshopping “junk on the air” . Many Europeans worry about the quality of the things for sale on TV. Good quality is important to them, and they believe they can’t be sure about the quality of the things they see on TV. The need for high quality means that European teleshopping companies will have to be different from American companies. They will have to be more careful about the quality of the things they sell. They will also have to work harder to sell things that the buyers can’t touch or see in person.

42.In which countries can people teleshop
43.What is an important reason for Germany to allow more teleshopping

My two little daughters and I usually go out and help others on Thankful Thursday.
Last Thursday we were going to buy lunch for the beggars(乞丐) in the street. Then we went to the nearest McDonald’s.
I ordered 15 lunches from it and drove my car to hand them out. We gave the lunches to the beggars. They were excited. We were happy to see that. Then we noticed a small, old woman, asking for pocket money. We gave her our last lunch bag. Before we got into the car, she started to speak to us, “No one has ever done anything like this for me before,” she said with a smile. “Well, I’m glad that we were the first,” I answered. “So when will you eat your lunch,” I asked. She just looked at me with her big, tired brown eyes and said, “Oh, dear, I’m not going to eat this lunch. You see, I have a little daughter. I usually can’t buy her favorite food, but today she will be so happy!”

Ryrkaypiy, a village with about 700 people, is located in the northeast of Russia. Standing on the coast of the Arctic Ocean, it has to brave both the Arctic’s cold weather and wild animals like polar bears. Most of the area’s polar bears live a few miles away from Ryrkaypiy. Only a few bears come near to the village now and then.
But last winter, over 50 polar bears went to Ryrkaypiy in search of food. The villagers were told to stay indoors to avoid danger. Now polar bears come to the village more often and in larger numbers than ever.
Although polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their life on the sea ice. The ice gives them a place where they can have a rest and catch fish. But as the temperature rises because of global warming, the bears have started to find their home disappearing.
Polar bears normally go onto dry land in summer, and return to the ice when the ocean freezes again in autumn. But over the past few years, the ocean has frozen later and later, and the ice area has become smaller and smaller. Unable to live on the ice, hungry polar bears have to look for food on land, including villages like Ryrkaypiy.
In some countries, polar bears are considered as endangered animals. If the earth becomes so warm that there is no longer enough ice for the bears to live on, there will probably be no polar bears.
Immediate action must be taken to protect both polar bears and humans.
66.Why did polar bears go to Ryrkaypiy last winter
67.What can polar bears do on the sea ice
68.When do polar bears normally go onto dry land
69.What will probably happen to polar bears if there is not enough ice

Du Fu (712-770), one of the greatest poets in China, is familiar to most of us. However, Du has remained largely unknown in the Western world.
The BBC’s one-hour documentary Du Fu: China’s Greatest Poet introduces the great poet to Western people. As the first English-language documentary about Du, it compares him to Dante and Shakespeare, two of the greatest masters of literature of the West.
In the film, British historian, Michael Wood explores the poet’s life. He visits a number of places, such as the poet’s birthplace Gongyi, Henan Province and the Du Fu Thatched Cottage(杜甫草堂) in Chengdu, Sichuan, where Du used to live. Along the way, he meets and talks to people who help to tell the stories of the poet.
The documentary explains why Du’s works have been popular for centuries. “Chinese people really value the recording of history and Du is better than anyone at reflecting(反映) history in his poetry. That’s because historical events are mirrored in his own life and spiritual(精神的) journey,” said Zeng Xiangbo, a professor at Renmin University of China.
Du was a civil servant(文职人员) in the country. But as the An Lushan Rebellion of 755 floored the empire, he escaped, took his family on the road as refugees(难民), and endured starvation(饥俄) and poverty(贫穷). Through ups and downs, the poet never stopped writing, pouring out his concern for his country and people, as well as celebrating the simple joys of life. Known as China’s “saint of poetry”, he wrote about 1,500 poems that are still with us today.

One day, a farmer’s donkey fell into a dry well. The poor animal cried for hours before his owner finally found him. The farmer tried hard to pull him out from the well but failed. He felt very sorry for the donkey but after carefully thinking about the situation, he decided that he would not save the donkey. Since the donkey was too old and it was not worth the trouble of saving. So he invited his neighbours to help him bury(埋葬) the old donkey in the well so that it would make him end his pain.
Hearing many people coming to help, the old donkey was excited at first. As they began to scoop the dirt into the well with shovels (铲子), he soon realized what was happening. He felt very upset and cried sadly again. As the farmer and his neighbours continued throwing the dirt on his back, he suddenly had a good idea. Some time later, when the farmer finally looked down into the well, he was surprised at what he saw: every time the dirt landed on his back, he would shake it off and take a step up!
Soon, everyone was amazed when the donkey stepped proudly over the edge of the well and ran away quickly! It seemed that it would bury him at first, but it actually helped him later because of the manner in which he faced his trouble.
That is life! Just like the donkey, life is going to throw dirt on us, all kinds of dirt. As long as we face our problems in an active way, and refuse to give in to any trouble, each dirt is like a stepping stone with which we get out of the deepest wells. Never stop and never give up. They are popular among many Chinese people because they help solve “last mile problems” in cities. For example, many people find it difficult to get to the hotel when they get off trains or to travel around the city.
However, the plans have also led to problems such as illegal(非法的) parking, vandalism(故意毁坏) and theft(偷窥). In February this year, two nurses in Beijing were placed under administrative detention(行政拘留) for five days for putting locks on two shared bikes.
In fact, these problems are also shared by bike-sharing plans abroad. Started in 2007, Velib is the largest public bike sharing company in Paris. At its early period, it also mat with problems of vandalism and theft. To solve the problem, the company came up with the idea of encouraging people to return the bikes to stations by providing free time for their next rides.
Now, Chinese bike-shared companies are also trying to solve these problems. For example, Mobike sets a 100-point credit score(信用分数) for each user, but the points will be taken because of his or her bad behavior. Once a score drops below 80, the bike rental(租金) will be increased(增加) from 1 yuan to 100 yuan per 30 minutes.

Wang Lin, a Chinese student, and Mary, an American student studying Chinese in China, were in a supermarket. They saw a young man walking down the stairs. In his hurry, he missed the last two steps and fell onto the ground. He tried to stand up while people around him laughed. Luckily, he seemed to be OK.
Mary found Wang Lin smiling a little and was unhappy about it. “Tell me, Lin, how could people laugh when someone fell like that Why didn’t they go to ask him if he was hurt ”
Wang Lin said, “Because they knew he wasn’t hurt too much.”
“But I still don’t understand. A fall is a fall. In my culture, people would never laugh!”
This is an example. The Chinese and the Westerners will think and act differently when seeing such a thing. Chinese people are used to laughing or smiling. Very often the person who is in an embarrassing situation will also laugh or smile to get out of it. However, if someone gets hurt seriously, it will not be a laughing matter any more. People will help him or her instead.
But in that case, a Westerner will rush over and help the person get up. If a Westerner falls, he or she, like a Chinese person, may try to make a joke if he or she is not hurt. If two close friends are walking together, and one falls but clearly isn’t hurt, a common joke is to say “Have a nice trip”.
So different people have different habits and different countries have different cultures.

Have you ever been to Thailand It is a country in Southeast Asia. I’ve been in Thailand for a few days with my parents. We are here for a holiday.
Now we are staying in Bangkok. It is the capital of Thailand and it is a very interesting place to visit. Yesterday we visited some places of interest in the city. They are great! This morning we went shopping. Bangkok is a wonderful place to shop for jewelry(珠宝)and clothes. My mother bought a nice necklace(项链). My father and I bought some fashionable T-shirts.
Thailand is called “Land of Smiles” because people here are very friendly. And it’s true! When we eat in the restaurants in Bangkok, the waiters are really nice and they are always smiling. Thai food is delicious, but it is sometimes a little spicy(辛辣的)for me. You can also get Chinese food here because a lot of Chinese people came to live in Bangkok many years ago. Chinese food is very good, and it isn’t as spicy as Thai food. Our American food can also be found in Bangkok. However, I don’t eat it. You know, I’d like to try new things when I travel.

I was very nervous as I waited to interview one of the most successful women of our times: Kathy Howe. I was just a young reporter and she was not only a popular singer but also a famous actress, staring in many movies.
As soon as the door opened, however, and her slim figure appeared, I immediately relaxed. She looked great, with her kind brown eyes, her excellent black hair, and her beautiful smile. I looked for bags under her eyes, but there were none. “How do you manage to look so good and live life in the fast lane at the same time ” I asked her.
She laughed, and her whole face shone. “It’s tiring to be famous. You have to work hard, be on time, and take care of yourself. Also, you have to go to Hollywood parties, be taken photos for magazines, and give interviews!”
As we talked, I found out that Kathy is a very warm and kind person, and that her family is more important to her than being a star. At the same time, she wants to do everything as well as she can, so she can sometimes seem to be hard.
When I asked her if she thought of herself as lucky, she didn’t answer immediately. Then she said. “Well, perhaps I’m lucky, but I also work very hard, and being famous has weak points, too. In fact, I’ve missed out on lots of things I really enjoy doing, like spending time with my daughter.”

My favorite movie star is Wu Jing. He is a great actor. He looks handsome. He had a film called the Battle at Lake Changjin《长津湖》recently. It’s a wonderful war film. And it is very popular these days. I think it’s moving.
But Li Ming likes Shen Teng best. He thinks his movies are funny. He will laugh loudly when he watches them. One of Shen Teng’s movies is Crazy Alien《疯狂的外星人》. But I don’t think it’s great. In fact, it’s boring. What’s more, Li Ming also likes watching Beijing Opera. He even hopes to be a Beijing Opera artist. I don’t like Beijing Opera very much, but my father likes it a lot. In October 2021, I left New York to study alone in London. My parents didn’t have enough money for my school, so I found three part-time jobs to pay for my studies. I worked early mornings and late nights, so I was tired all the time. After two week’s hard work, I got a cold and had a very high fever. Because I was new in London, I had no friends. Besides(而且), I was too shy to talk with others and ask others for help. After sleeping on the bed for two days, I went out to get some food in a small shop nearby.
I picked some food and gave it to the shopkeeper, who asked me, “You look terrible, my boy! You are not feeling well, right ” I said yes in a low voice.
She pointed at the food I was buying and offered, “I can make you a sandwich, so you don’t have to do it yourself.” I nodded(点头)without saying a word.
She went into the back room and came again with a bowl of hot soup and a sandwich.
“The soup will warm you up,” she said with a friendly smile.
What really warmed me up was not the soup. It was her smile that told me she cared me.
And the shopkeeper teaches me about the power(力量)of being kind.
From that day on, I did not let shyness stop me from talking with and being kind to others.

The game of Go is one of the four most popular games in Chinese culture. It is not only a competitive(竞争的) event of the mind, but also a board game of entertainment(娱乐).
Go was created in China more than 4,000 years ago. Now many people around the world have shown great interest in it, too. Moreover, Go is still used as a way of cultural exchange among the people in many Eastern and Western countries today.
The game of Go has many meanings for real life. It represents a square world of round pieces in black and white. While the board is fixed, the pieces can be placed in millions of different ways, just as life in the real world may take many turns. The proper placement of each tiny Go piece is the same as how one might solve a difficult problem in life.
Go carries deeper cultural and competitive meanings. In the game of Go, the players do not wipe out(消灭) each other’s pieces. Instead, they simply try to win a larger share of space while allowing the other side some space. The one who makes the other side into a dead corner wins the game.

A few years ago, my husband and I were on an island for a weekend with our 3- and 4-year-old daughters. As we went back and thought about what to do next, our girls jumped in and told us exactly what they wanted to do. “We want to go to the butterfly museum,” said Ariella and Eliana.
As soon as we walked into the main area of the museum, we saw thousands or beautiful butterflies all flapping (拍打) their coloful wings.
My girls were jumping up and down and I knew we had made the right decision to come to the museum. They were having so much fun. I turned to our museum tour guide because I was curious and asked, “How long do butterflies live ” She said, “About ten days.” “What can butterflies do in ten days ” I asked. The guide sopped, looked at me and said, “They make the world a more beautiful place.” “Wow,” I said, “I never thought about butterflies like that. Thank you.”
After we said goodbye, I couldn’t stop thinking about what the guide had said. She was right. We all have something to offer the world with the time we have. When we focus our gifts on taking care of each other every day, we can make a difference.

The proper greeting(问候)will make customers(顾客)feel welcome. Knowing how to greet can help your work succeed.

Smile when you greet your customers. You want your customers to feel welcome, and that starts with your body language. Smile, and walk to them in a right way. Everything you do should show “I’m glad you’re here!”.
Remember what customers prefer(更喜欢). It is good to remember customers’ likes and dislikes. If you work at a clothes store, remembering a customer’s favorite color will make her feel like you care about her. This is a great way to let customers come again.
Show customers to the thing they want. Don’t just tell them where to look for what they want. They will thank you if you lead them to get the thing they want.
Give space after the greeting if necessary. Usually, greet an arriving customer as soon as you see her. However, if her face looks like “don’t talk to me, leave me alone”, you’d better give her space. But let her know she can find you if she needs help.
