“What are you doing, Tom ”
“The storm,” he says. “It’s the same storm as Thursday night. Let’s go to the tree. Maybe you can go home!”
Jan follows Tom down the road then she remembers something.
“The time capsule!”
Tom shows her the biscuit tin under his jacket. “I’ve got it.” And now maybe there’s the possibility she can return to the future. Soon they come to the river and then the old building.
They run up the path through the trees and arrive at the piece of land with the apple tree.
“Now what do we do ” asks Jan.

Tom uses his hands to dig a hole by the tree. He buries the time capsule and then stands up.

When people eat, western people are used to using knives and forks, but Chinese people are used to using chopsticks. More than 3000 years ago, Chinese people ate with chopsticks. Who invented the chopsticks
Long ago, Chinese people used to eat with their hands. In Shang Dynasty, the last king, Zhou was cruel(残酷的). He always killed people because the food was too hot or too cold. It made people afraid to serve him. His favorite Daji was also afraid.
One day Daji served King Zhou his meal. When she tried the dish for the king, she found that it was too hot. Daji felt very nervous because the king would be angry. Suddenly she had an idea and she used two pieces of her long hairpins(发簪)to put the food to the king’s mouth.
The King Zhou found it so interesting to eat with two long sticks that he forgot how hot the food was. After that, Daji thought it was a good way to solve this problem and asked people to make two long-thin gold sticks. People found it better to eat with sticks than with their hands. I came to the United States from Africa to live with my uncle Jim in Maryland. One year later, I lost my sight because of a serious illness.
Jim told me not to go out. He worried I would get lost or hit by a car. But I was dogged. I told him a pay attention. I believed I’d succeed. I must succeed. I must put my will into action. I dreamed of being a broadcaster.
Then a neighbor told me that a public library in Washington D.C. was offering a free course, specially designed for blind people. This was an important chance for me.
But how would I map my way I knew that the American singer Ray Charles, also blind, got around on his own without a cane (手杖). His secret was to count steps. But I couldn’t seem to do that way. Instead I developed my imagination (想象力), sensing the layout (布局) of places I visited and taking notes of landmarks in my mind.
At first, I would have to stop to imagine and map a new space in my mind. The next time I visited that place, I’d use that to find the way. Today, I am used to doing it. But I’ve still lost my way many times. I’d have to ask for help, not thinking what others think or say about me.
Sometimes I’d be down and I wanted to give up. Perhaps my uncle was right. Maybe I’d stay home and wait until someone came to help. On those days when I lost my way, I'd go to bed with a bad feeling. _________. I had a strong wish to beat blindness and be successful, and that was usually enough to get me out of bed the next day and try again.
Along the way I learned to be patient with myself and realized that asking for help didn’t beat me in any way. Instead, I’ve got a lot of success so far.
Today, I’m a reporter and broadcaster. I've made my dream come true.
Yes, I’ve lost my way many times and I found it again. Yes, I’ve come close to being hit by a car but never been hit by one. When people ask, “Aren’t you afraid to be out alone ” The answer to me is clear: I would face danger and find happiness instead of staying home and being unhappy.

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandma always took me to the orchard(果园)on the hill. At that time, we had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to the half way up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level(生产水平)of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about our difficulty. Later canals(管道)and other projects began to be built. “Who are they ” I asked. “They are lovely men from our government,” my grandma replied.
Later I moved to a city for my junior high school. One day, my parents and I made time to return to our village. We were surprised because everything in the village had changed. The canals ran past every orchard. Villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill to get water anymore. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some pears and apples. She told us that the water conservancy project(水利工程)was useful. The government made a policy(政策)to encourage more people to plant fruit trees with clean water in the river.

Don’t let your kids drag their feet over doing chores. Help them to make the boring chores enjoyable.
Work as a team. A simple and great way to make cleaning great fun is to do it together. If everyone shares a part, it will be much easier. Play some games while you are doing chores. You can also compete with each other to do the cleaning faster.
Turn “kitchen time” into a party. Let one child be a cook and another be a DJ. The cook chooses what to make for dinner. The DJ chooses to play some music. Everyone can dance in the kitchen while preparing dinner or cleaning up the kitchen.
Give some prizes. One of my friends was trying to get her kids to help put around the house, and someone advised her to give the kids some things like candies or toys as rewards. The advice worked like magic. But remember not to keep the kids doing the same chores all the time. Because kids will be bored.
Doing housework is an important life skill. Children should take part in almost all the chores. They will feel happier when they do something for the family. Many of us enjoy watching wild animals, and we can learn a lot from them. Wild geese, for example, tell us what is teamwork. In fall, they fly to the warm south to get away from cold winter. They fly in no order, but they can quickly form a V shape, with one bird leading.
This V shape helps wild geese save energy. When the front bird moves its wings (翅膀) up and down, the force of the air lifts the next one. The bird in the front has the hardest job. When it gets tired, it moves behind and another bird takes its place. By sharing the leading role, the group can travel very far. Wild geese flying in a V shape can fly 70% farther without a rest than the one flying alone.
During the long flying journey, wild geese communicate (交流) with one another. They honk (鸣叫) to cheer on each other to keep up the speed and work toward a common goal.

Mexico: In Mexico, dining is more than a meal. It’s a social (社会的) occasion—lunches are seldom quick and suppers can last for hours. You’d better look at the other people’s eyes when dining and say hello to them.
DRINKING MANNERS
America: If you empty a bottle into someone’s glass, it’ll make that person think you want more and the person will buy the next bottle. It’s polite to put the last drops into your own glass.

For Mandy Chan, it was a “long” walk from home to the subway station when she first put on Hanfu in public. “I made it by myself. It was a set with a cream—colored shirt, 3 brown jacket styled in China’s Ming dynasty (明朝) and a red skirt,” she recalled, almost 10 years later.

For Hanfu lovers like Chan, the piece of historical clothing has untold stories and philosophical (哲学上的) ideas in its every detail.
The sewing line (缝合线) in the middle part of Hanfu, Chan said, fits the human body and helps people to dress properly. This design is not just as decoration, but points to the qualities (品质) of the wearers. It stands for upright and soft personality.

Rose is my good friend. She told me that she would come to Japan for vacation in July. But she was very anxious. She said she didn’t know what to do in Japanese restaurants. I had to ask her to understand these table manners and tell her what to do in the restaurant.
Some restaurants in Japan have tatami floor(榻榻米地板). When you step in a restaurant, you must take off your shoes. When you sit at the table, you will receive a small wet cloth at most Japanese restaurants. Use this to wash your hands before eating, then carefully fold it and set it aside on the table. Don’t use it as a napkin, or to touch any part of your face.
Before and after a meal, it is important to say traditional thank-you words. You can make a little noise when you eat. For example, it is common to make some slurping noises while eating noodles. Japanese can say it tastes better if you slurp. For sushi, you should eat up. It is polite to lift small bowls of rice or soup when you eat. After you finish your meal, it is good manners to restore all your dishes to the way they were at the beginning of the meal. For example, you can put chopsticks back on the chopsticks shelf. I think these manners are helpful to her.

Everybody enjoys acts of kindness. But can you explain why Some people think kindness is something out of love and care, while others believe it is just a tool that we use to become more popular. But research shows that being kind can be good for an area of the brain called Striatum. Research also shows that kindness improves people’s mood (情绪). But why and how does it happen Here are a number of different ways.
Being kind can make someone smile. If you see yourself smile in a public place, people around may be smiling, too. This is specially true for your close friends and family. A kind act makes someone who is sad feel better. It can also make ourselves feel good.
Secondly, being kind develops a good start with others. Kind acts like buying someone a present make friendships stronger. Research has shown that spending money on others may help you get a stronger feeling of happiness than spending it on yourself.
Thirdly, being kind also lifts everyone’s mind. In another recent research, even children in their first year of secondary school know how being kind makes them feel happy. If one person is kind, he or she makes others in the group kind. Imagine that you make cakes for the office and it makes others do it each month. Then you’re getting a lot more cakes.
Finally, being kind may improve your mood. Many researches have also shown that if you’re in a good mood, you can act much more kindly. This makes it a wonderful two-way relationship, doesn’t it So the story doesn’t end here.

Numbers in different culture may have different meanings. In China, some people think that some numbers bring them good luck. Take “8” for example. The Chinese pronunciation of the number “8” has almost the same sound as that of the Chinese character “发[ fa;]”, which means making a fortune (发财). So, many Chinese people spend a lot of money on getting their telephone numbers or car numbers to include this number “8”. They believe that the number will bring them money.
However, others don’t believe that numbers have anything to do with good luck. They think such an idea is only an ignorant (愚昧的) and superstitious (迷信的) belief. A number is one thing, and good luck is another. They will ask “How can you ever have any good luck simply because of some lucky numbers, even if you don’t work hard, don’t have good opportunities (机会) or don’t get along well with the people around you ”
As for me, I agree with the latter (后者). Clearly, lucky numbers are only a kind of superstition. Perhaps it holds true for some cases, but often it does not. Who can help you Maybe you think your parents, teachers or others can help you. But in fact, all these people only help you to help yourself.
There have been many great men in history. They had few people to help them. They could not get good education, either. But they tried their best to learn and never gave up. One famous teacher in England once told his students, “I can not make you great men, but I can help you make men of yourselves.”
However, some young people do nothing and they depend on others. If these young people can see their weak points(弱点) and change their ways, they can be successful. Young people these days have to take part in more and more after-school classes. They are much busier than they have ever been before. How much is too much Should there be a limit (限定) to the number of after-school classes that a young person takes part in Personally, I think there should be a limit. I am an overtired and worried parent of three. We have been working to cut out as many unnecessary after-school activities as we can. There are many reasons for my worry.
One of the reasons is that we just don’t have enough time as a family. We often sat around the table and discussed something at the dinner table in the past. We are lucky now if we even get dinner, let alone eat it as a family.
Another reason for the worry is that my kids’ grades are falling. These kids who used to be ‘A’ and ‘B’ students are now trying very hard to keep a ‘C’ in most classes. There just isn’t enough time for homework. School education should be the most important—not the after-school classes.
The final reason I feel worried is that we are all so tired. Everyone is running three different places to take different classes. The kids are so tired that they are even falling asleep in class. Kids need time to rest, play, imagine, and create (创造). After-school classes claim (声称) to create well-round kids, but as a result, they actually take away the happiness and free time of the kids.
129.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage (①=Paragraph 1)

①“I will think of it.” It is easy to say this, but do you know what great things have come from thinking Though we can not see, or hear, or feel our thoughts, they have great power (力量) !
②Isaac Newton was seated in his garden on a summer evening when he saw an apple fall from a tree. He began to think, and tried to find out why the apple fell. Then he discovered how the earth, sun, moon, and stars are kept in their places.
③James Ferguson once saw the inside of his father’s watch, and he wondered, “Why should not I make a watch ” This set him thinking and it led to a wooden clock which kept good time.
④Walt Disney, the famous American film-maker, was often thinking of new ideas. One day, when he was in a meeting, he suddenly stopped talking, deep in thought. He looked and looked at a place high up in the room. This continued for a long time, and then he got an idea for a new cartoon.
⑤Ideas come at any time, and the important thing is to think. When you meet with any difficulty, don’t lose heart. Try to think of it before asking someone to help you. Think and by thinking you will learn how to think creatively.
133.From the passage we can learn that _________.
