We often think the Arctic(北极) only has snow and ice. But in fact, it has far more than that! The Arctic is on the top of the Earth. The Arctic Ocean makes up two-thirds of the Arctic, while one-third is made up of land
in eight countries, including Russian, Canada, and the US.
The Arctic lands have many various lives that can grow in very cold temperatures. In fact, the Arctic is home to more than 21,000 kinds of lives. There are whales, Arctic foxes and many more. The polar bear(北极 熊) is the most famous Arctic animal, body length of up to 2.5 meters, 1.6 meters high, weighing 500 kg. Polar
bears are not only good at swimming in cool water, but also good at quick jump on the ice.
You might think that the Arctic is too cold for people to live in. But surprisingly, there are about 4 million
people living there. That’s the same population as the city of Taiyuan in Shanxi, China. About 10 percent are
local people. They have been there for thousands of years. The Arctic offers many activities for them, from dog
sledding to ice fishing. However, it is a challenge for people to make a living there.
A group of scientists recently came back from a one-year-long study in the Arctic. They have bad news: the Arctic ice is melting at a dangerous speed and may completely disappear by the end of this century. An area five times larger than the UK has disappeared since 1978 and the melting is getting faster. Less sea ice means
the Earth cannot reflect the sun rays or cool itself.
Warmer seas then melt more ice. What does this mean for us Many animals, such as polarbears, hunt for
their food on the ice. If they can’t do this anymore, they will die of hunger.

“Mum, there’s something I have to tell you.” Ula’s eyes were wide with distress(苦恼)as she spoke tome.
“What is it, sweetie ” I reached over and pushed her hair behind her ear.
“I know we weren’t supposed to do it,” she began, before telling me she’d been playing with one of her
friends.
The friend had wanted to practise the CPR(心肺复苏术)they had learned in swimming class on her.
Ula started to cry. “I told her I didn’t want to do it. But she really wanted to, and I didn’t want to make her
mad.” I sent anote to the other girl’s parents so they could talk to their daughter.
But something Ula had said worried me. Ula knew that what the other kid wanted to do wasn’t right. But
she didn’t stand up for herself, and that frightened me.
For the rest of the day, Ula and I talked about boundaries that help us, when necessary, to deal with our needs before the needs of others. Boundaries can protect us from being overworked; they can protect our belongings(物品)or health. Sometimes, they simply buy us the time to be alone or with a friend, to be away
from the chaos(混乱)of life, to rest and to enjoy ourselves.
Ula and I imagined different friends in different situations, crying and threatening(威胁)to tell on(告发)her,
and I taught her to say “no”, even in these situations. I told her that I trust her to do what is right, no matter how
angry that may make someone. And I told her that I will always be there to back her up.
Now, Ula realizes that it doesn’t matter if we are 7 or 47: Learning to protect our personal boundaries is a never-ending story, filled with errors(错误) in judgment(判断) . With each day of our lives, we have to learn
where the line is. We have to decide whether and how, on that day, we will defend(捍卫)it.
I stayed with Ula until she said, “You need to go eat.” And in that moment, she reminded me of the next great lesson in boundaries: It is not enough to lookout for(留意) our own limits(界限)-we must also honor(尊
重)them in others.
37 .After hearing Ula’s story, the writer felt worried mainly because .
A .Ula’s friend had a bad influence on her
B .there was something wrong with her heart
C .Ula had trouble getting along with her friend
D .Ula couldn’trefuse others
38 .By creating boundaries, we can according to the passage.
A .manage to deal with the chaos of life B .protect ourselves from extra work
C .build better friendships with others D .understand others’ needs better
39 .What does the writer advise her daughter to do when she is asked to do what she dislikes
A .Say no to her friends no matter how they feel.
B .Refuse her friends’ requests as long as(只要)they don’t get angry.
C .Speak to her friends’ parents when she feels threatened.
D .Talk with her friends about how she truly feels.
40 .Which of the following would the writer agree with
A .We should respect others’ limits while defending our own.
B .Boundaries are more important for children than adults.
C .It is selfish to put our needs before others’ needs.
D .People who take no notice of our feelings are unworthy of our friendship.

The world is always full of surprising things. Everyone expects to see the beautiful eye-pleasing flowers and plants. It is reported that there are about 390,900 plants in the world. The following may not be so
eye-pleasing, but are certainly eye-catching.
Baseball Plant
This ball-shaped plant used to be only found in South Africa. It is thought to be endangered(濒临灭绝 的)in the natural environment in which it lives, yet it’s commonly planted around the world. Luckily, some special gardens have started to grow this plant to make sure that it no longer needs to be got from the wild so
that it does not die out.
African Starfish Flower
Don’t fall for its beautiful flowers. It smells like bad meat, and its colors and hairs really look like those from a dead animal. This works wonders for attracting insects, even from a great distance. This is also a plant in danger as the result of less and less living space. This has been a problem for collectors hoping to have the plant
at their home, as well as the Zulus, a group of people in Africa who use the plant as medicine.
Bat Flower
The black bat flower is an unusual flower that grows in the wild of Yunnan Province in China. It needs a special environment to grow. This is the reason why it is an endangered plant. As a result, the bat flower attracts
a lot of attention from collectors and gardeners. It is famous for its bat-shaped black flowers. Its leaves look
like the wings of a bat. There’s no question how the plant got its name.
Venus Flytrap
Venus flytrap can be easily found in many places. It lives mainly on meat. It survives like other plants by getting energy from gases in the air and the soil. However, it also eats insects. It opens its mouth wide and the hairs inside try to attract any insect that might land. As soon as it senses an insect, it shuts the mouth and begins
to enjoy the food.
Plants take in CO◆ from the air and make oxygen. They help keep soil in their place. Many of them are
commonly used for making our environment look better, and some of them are also used as medicine, food and
so on. You are lucky if you see one of the plants mentioned above.

Underage (未成年的) driving is common in many parts of India.
Parents of 10 teenagers have been sentenced to a day in prison for letting their c 66 drive in the
southern Indian city, Hyderabad.
The police said 35 parents served a one-day jail term last month for the samer 67 . The parents told
the BBC they were not aware of the rule which says they would be responsible for a 68 a child to drive.
“This is part of the city’s f 69 to reduce underage driving,” the police said.
“I was unaware of the underage driving rule. My 17-year-old son took his bike to go for his tutorial. And
we were s 70 to prison,” said Shakeel Ahmed.
A senior police officer said he hoped spending a day or two days in jail would make parents think
t 71 before letting children use their vehicles.
“In the l 72 two months, four children died in the city because they drove vehicles. To s 73
similar cases, we have charged over 1,000 people for underage driving,” the senior police officer told the BBC .
A 74 city in southern India, Bangalore, also tried to promote (促进) safe driving on its roads last
year.
The city’s police tracked down five teenagers who performed risky stunts (特技) on the road. Since they
were under 18 years old, the police arrested their parents i 75 .
Road accidents are common in India, often due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles. Experts blame poorly designed roads. More that 15,000 people were killed on India’s roads in 2016, according
to the figures released by the government.
