When you’re going through a period of anxiety or depression it can be difficult to make decisions, whether those are significant life changes or everyday choices. Those with generalized anxiety disorder or mood disorders often report feeling uncomfortable with or being troubled by feelings of uncertainty --- which doesn’t help when you need to make a decision, big or small.
Now in a new study, researchers find that people with higher levels of anxiety and depression are less able to adapt to fast-changing situations. But with the right intervention there may be ways to help those with anxiety or depression make better decisions in the moment.
Participants were aged between 18 and 55; some had symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder or major depressive disorder while others had no history of mental illness at all.
In the study, after filling in measures related to anxiety, depression, and worry, participants took part in a video game. In each round, they were asked to choose between two shapes: picking one shape resulted in a reward, while the other delivered an electric shock.
The task took place in two blocks --- one stable, in which one shape was associated with a reward 75% of the time and the other 25% of the time, and the other unstable, in which the shape with a higher probability of resulting in reward switched every twenty trials. In the unstable block, therefore, the participants had to keep adjusting their responses as the probabilities change.
Those participants with symptoms of anxiety or depression were slower to adjust their responses to the changes in probabilities. This suggests that mood disorders are associated with difficulty making decisions in changing circumstances.
Senior author Sonia Bishop argues that those participants who adapted quickly did so because of their emotional resilience (适应力). “Emotionally resilient people tend to focus on what gave them a good outcome, and in many real-world situations that might be key to learning to make good decisions,” she says.
Sonia Bishop suggests that encouraging people to focus on past successes rather than failures could be a useful behavioral intervention, making those difficult decisions a bit less tricky.

Ever fought with a problem Picked up a new skill Encountered a difficult concept The language of learning is full of references to parts of the body outside the brain. Perhaps that’s because these phrases suggest something deeper. Researchers are detecting that learning is easier, quicker and more long-lasting if it involves the body.
“In the past, people have argued that as we grow, we become more able to think abstractly (抽象地),” says Andrew Manches, a psychologist at the University of Edinburgh in the UK. Conventional (传统的) thinking might suggest that teachers should help prevent children from using body gestures to prepare them for the adult world. But in truth, the physical world never really leaves our thinking. For example, when we process verbs such as lick, kick and pick, medical scanners show that the parts of our brain that control the muscles in our face, legs and hands, respectively, light up with activity.
Science is beginning to back up the idea that actions really might speak louder than words in the classroom. Spencer Kelly, a psychologist at Colgate University in New York, has found that people spend three times as much time gesturing when they think the message they get across is remarkably important, suggesting that even if only at the subconscious (潜意识的) level, we appreciate the communicative value of our body language. Kelly has also found evidence that a
teacher is more appealing to students when he or she uses arm and hand movements to stress points.
Also, some studies indicate that young children obtain more if their teacher uses gestures when explaining a concept. Meanwhile, Sunsan Wagner Cook, a psychologist at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, has found that children pick up new concepts more effectively, if they are taught to mirror and repeat gestures their teacher uses.
32. How did people in the past understand learning
A. The older a student grows, the less likely he will think abstractly.
B. Teachers are advised to encourage students to use body gestures.
C. The physical world never really leaves our thinking.
D. Body gestures should be removed to promote adult-like thinking.
33. What can we learn from Spencer Kelly’s study
A. Body movements can increase a teacher’s popularity.
B. People use gestures every time they convey the messages.
C. Young students like to mirror their teacher’s gestures.
D. Body language is more powerful than spoken language.
34. How did the author make us believe the truth of the discovery
A. By explaining some rules. B. By presenting different researches.
C. By making some predictions. D. By analyzing the theory.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. The Language of Learning: A Vital Approach
B.Thinking Abstractly: A Symbol of Adult World
C. Body Language: A Universal Language Signal
D. Body Gestures: A Sharp Tool for Fast Learning

Screen time includes all those hours you spend in front of your computer at work, and the time you spend playing with your cell phone or watching TV. 36 According to some research, there are some convincing reasons to make the effort to look at something else other than a screen.
It's bad for your health. Being in front of a screen is almost always sedentary (久坐的) behavior, which relates to things like lower fitness levels. Turn this around by choosing something active. You do not have to do exercise at the gym. 37 They can help you keep healthy.
It messes up your sleep. When teenagers have more than four hours of screen time per day, and especially when they use their screens before going to bed, they have trouble falling asleep. If you're not sleeping well, it will not only make you feel tired the next day, but it can also affect your performance at work or in school. 38
It hinders (妨碍) your brain’s performance. 39 Researchers aren't yet sure why this is true, but it probably has to do with the ways that technology teaches the brain to function. If kids want to perform well in situations that involve memorization or problem solving, limit their screen time.
40 People who spend more time online, especially young people, are more likely to struggle with communication. If interpersonal communication is important to you or part of your job, you will likely get benefits if you spend less time in front of your screen.
A.It all adds up.
B.Here comes a solution.
C.If you should use a screen, try to do just that.
D.It’s not good for developing communication skills.
E.You can take a walk, or work on a project at home.

One day, my elder brother and I were coming back from the islands where we often risked going with other fishermen. All at once, the sky over our heads was covered with dark clouds and in less than a minute we were in a terrible storm. Strangely, it seemed that the storm struck us only. I could clearly see that the sun shone brightly in the area not far away.
With the wind and waves, we were going in the direction of the whirlpool (旋涡). Other fishermen were in a very distant area without noticing what we were experiencing. We shouted for help but in vain. We were hopeless. Nothing could save us. I felt sick, as if I was falling from a mountain top in a dream. We went round and round, nearer and nearer to the horrible edge of the whirlpool. It may appear strange, but at that moment, when we were on the edge of the whirlpool, I felt calmer than when we were moving towards it. I began to think how amazing a thing it was to die in such a way, and how wonderful it was to see the power of nature. Suddenly, we went over the edge. I thought my life was over. But moment after moment passed, and I was still safe.
The boat was on the inside of the huge whirlpool and we were going round in circles at great speed. I saw clearly that there were other objects in the whirlpool---trees and barrels (桶子). After a while, I became curious about the whirlpool itself. I then made three important observations. The first, the larger the bodies were, the more rapidly they fell; the second, between two objects of equal extent, round objects fell down less rapidly; and the third, between two objects of the same size, objects shaped like a tube fell down more slowly.

根据文章第二段中“In the past, people have argued that as we
grow, we become more able to think abstractly(抽象地)(过去,人们认为,随着我们的成长,我们越来越能够抽象地思考)”以及“Conventional(传统的)thinking might suggest that teachers should help prevent children from using body gestures to prepare them for the adult world.(传统的想法可能表明,教师应该帮助防止孩子们使用身体姿势来为成人世界做准备)”可知,过去的人们认为学习应该去掉身体姿势,以促进成年人的思维。
根据文章倒数第二段中“Kelly has also found evidence that a
teacher is more appealing to students when he or she uses arm and hand movements to stress points.(凯利还发现证据表明,当老师用手臂和手的动作来强调重点时,他或她对学生更有吸引力。)”
根据文章最后一段中“Also, some studies indicate that young
children obtain more if their teacher uses gestures when explaining a concept.(此外,一些研究表明,如果老师在解释一个概念时使用手势,幼儿会获得更多。)”
根据文章第一段中“Researchers are detecting that learning is
easier, quicker and more long-lasting if it involves the body.(研究人员发现,如果涉及身体,学习更容易、更快速、更持久。)”
39 Researchers aren't yet sure why this is true, but it probably has to do with the ways that technology teaches the brain to
function.
F.Kids do better in school when they have less screen time.
G.So it’s worth the effort to use your screen less and get more rest.
36.A【解析】根据空格处前一句“Screen time includes all those hours you spend in front of your computer at work, and the time you spend playing with your cell phone or watching TV.(屏幕时间包括你在电脑前工作的所有时间,以及你玩手机或看电视的时间。)”
37.E【解析】根据空格处前一句“You do not have to do exercise at the gym.(你不必非得在健身房锻炼。)”可知,E项“You can take a walk, or work on a project at home.(你可以散散步或者在家里运动。)”
38.G【解析】根据空格处前一句“If you're not sleeping well, it will not only make you feel tired the next day, but it can also affect your performance at work or in school.(如果你睡不好,不仅会让你第二天感到疲倦,还会影响你在工作或学校的表现。)”
39.F【解析】根据下文“If kids want to perform well in situations that involve memorization or
problem solving, limit their screen time.(如果孩子们想在涉及记忆或解决问题的情况下表现良好,就要限制他们在屏幕上的时间。)”可知,如果减少面对屏幕的时间,孩子们的表现就会更好,与F项“Kids do better in school when they have less screen time.(当孩子们有更少的屏幕时间时,他们在学校表现更好。)”
40.D【解析】根据空格处后一句“People who spend more time online, especially young people, are more likely to struggle with communication.(花更多时间上网的人,尤其是年轻人,更有可能难以与人沟通。)”可知,本段主要讲的是面对屏幕时间过长对沟通方面的影响,因此D项“It’s not good for developing communication skills.(这不利于培养沟通技巧。)”

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
So I tied myself to a barrel and jumped into the sea._______________________________

So I tied myself to a barrel and jumped into the sea. Seeing what I did, my brother also found a barrel. After he finished tying, I shouted to him, "Jump!" Without waiting, he jumped into the sea and we tried hard to escape. We couldn't see anything in the sea. The only thing we could do is try our best to swim away from the whirlpool. Some time after we left the boat, it was pulled into the bottom of the whirlpool. Soon after that, the whirlpool became less wild.
Then the sky was clear, the wind calmer, and the sun was shining. We were still tied to the barrels and the waves soon carried us to an area where the other fishermen were. In the end, a boat picked us up. We were very tired. The fishermen were our old friends, but they were unable to recognize us. When we told them our story, they looked astonished and in disbelief. Then I told them what observations I made. They all praised my calmness and carefulness. From this experience, I learned that no matter how dangerous the situation is, stay calm and observe carefully, then we can find the solution.
