Every country in the world has a flag. A flag is a piece of cloth with a picture or pattern on it. The flag is a symbol that stands for the country. It is a custom in many places for people to fly or hang a flag. The flag tells something about the country and its culture. This may be about its land, its history, or the things that the people do there.
Many flags have patterns of stripes (条纹). The flag of Italy has a green stripe, a white stripe and a red stripe. Each stripe tells something about Italy. The white stripe is symbol of Italy’s snowy mountains. Some flags show pictures. The flag of Canada has a picture of a red maple (枫叶) leaf, which is a symbol of the maple trees in Canada. The Mexican flag has both a pattern of stripes and a picture. The picture shows an eagle eating a snake. This picture comes from a very old Mexican story.
A flag may also tell about a country’s past. The American flag is called the Stars and Stripes. It has pattern of fifty stars and thirteen stripes. The fifty stars are a symbol of the fifty states in the country, and the thirteen stripes are a symbol of the country’s first thirteen colonies (殖民地).
However, a flag may be a symbol of a group, a school, or an event like the Olympics. The flag of the Olympics shows five rings of different colors that connect. Each ring is a symbol for a part of the world that joins in the Olympics. The Red Cross is group that helps people who are in trouble. If a person sees the Red Cross flag, which has a red cross against a white background, he knows he can ask for help. People may fly a flag as a custom on a holiday. Children’s Day in Japan is a holiday when the country wishes for children’s happiness. It is a custom on this day to fly a flag with a picture of a fish.
Flags are also used as a way to talk. A flag with patterns can be very helpful to people who do not speak the same language. Sailors on ships use flags to talk to sailors on other ships. They may not speak the same language, but they know what the patterns mean. A flag with blue and white squares says “no.” A flag with five stripes that are blue, white, and red says “yes.”

Harbin, in northeastern China, is the site of the Harbin International Snow and Ice Festival, the biggest winter festival in the world. Some of the biggest and most beautiful ice sculptures (雕塑) can be seen in the festival.
Harbin’s location and freezing temperatures make it a 61 place to host a winter festival. The city centre sits on the banks of the Songhua River. The river freezes over in the winter and provides hundreds of thousands of cubic metres of ice. Ice artists from around the world turn the blocks of ice into buildings, animals, and other 62 .
The world’s largest winter festival grew out of a traditional ice lantern display and garden party that was 63 held in 1963. The snow and ice sculptures became part of the ice lantern festivities in 1985. In 2001, the celebration and Heilongjiang’s International Ski Festival joined together and started to use its current (现行的) name.
It’s hard to imagine that this grand display of ice and snow sculptures started as ice in a bucket. Traditional ice lanterns were created by freezing water in a bucket, 64 the ice, and making a hole into the block of ice. A candle was then placed inside the block to create a lantern.
Today’s creations are much more carefully 65 and take much more time to form. Although the basic materials are the same-water, light, and ice-the displays now include LED lights and a lot of details. From a 66 block of ice to the world’s largest ice and snow amusement park, the festival has made a dramatic change. No wonder it attracts millions of people each year.

We can easily and cheaply get all the wisdom of the ages and all the stories that have delighted mankind for centuries are easily and cheaply available to all of us within the covers of books. The most unlucky people in the world are those who have never discovered how satisfying it is to read good books.
Reading is the pleasure of the mind, which means that it is a little like a sport: your eagerness and knowledge and quickness make you a good reader. Reading is fun, not because the writer is telling you something, but because it makes your mind work. Your own imagination works along with the author’s or even goes beyond his. Your experience, compared with his, brings you to the same or different conclusions, and your ideas develop as you understand his.
Every book stands by itself, like a one—family house, but books in a library are like houses in a city. Although they are separate, together they all add up to something. They are connected with each other and with other cities. Books influence each other; they link the past, the present and the future and have their own generations, like families. Wherever you start reading, you connect yourself with one of the families or ideas, and in the long run, you not only find out about the world and the people in it but also you find out about yourself, too.
Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be. If you read books somebody tells you “you ought” to read, you probably won’t have fun. But if you put down a book you don’t like and try another till you find one that means something to you, and then relax yourself with it, you will almost certainly have a good time and if you become, as a result of reading, better, wiser, kinder, or more gentle, you won’t have suffered during the process.

80.例文
How to get on well with classmates My name is Li Hua, a 15-year-old middle school student. I’m glad that I can get on well with my classmates.
In my opinion, I think it is really important for every student to have a good relationship with our classmates. One of the main reasons is that it can give us a better learning environment. Besides, it can also improve our social skills.
However, how can we get on well with others First, we must be friendly to our classmates and try to help them when they are in trouble. Second, if we have different opinions, we should discuss them and try to find out solutions instead of quarreling. Third, we can take part in after-school activities together, which can help us understand each other better and improve our relationships.
In a word, getting on well with others makes us study and live better.
