Teen faints after skipping meals
A teenage girl fainted yesterday at Stonechester High School after skipping meals.
Jennifer Jones, 15, told friends in her class that she was feeling unwell. She then passed out in her morning PE lesson and was rushed to hospital.
Jennifer was found to have dangerously low blood sugar levels and was treated immediately. Her worried parents told the doctor that their daughter missed breakfast that day and 1 touched her dinner the night before. Fortunately, she is now out of danger. Her doctor says that she will make a full recovery in a day or two.
Jennifer’s classmates hope to see her back at school soon. They say that she has struggled with eating problems for a long time. “Jennifer thought that skipping meals would be a simple way to reach her target weight,” her friend Laura Williams told our reporter. “She has not eaten breakfast for the last few months. She told me she had trouble concentrating in class. I 2 her that skipping meals was unhealthy, but she wouldn’t listen.”
Jennifer’s case is a reminder of the 3 of the unhealthy weight-loss habits that have become common among teenagers of both sexes. In a society where being thin is often seen as being beautiful, teenagers sometimes turn to extreme methods to slim down quickly. According to a recent survey of senior high school students’ lifestyles, almost one fifth of teenagers regularly skip meals, one in ten over-exercise and four per cent even take weight-loss medicine. Health experts are 4 these figures. They are increasing their efforts to educate teenagers about the side effects of losing weight too quickly. They have also warned them against using such extreme methods.
“These so-called ‘quick-fix methods’ 5 to be harmful to teenagers. It is normal for teenagers to be slightly overweight and there is no reason why they should be worried. However, for those who are dangerously overweight, it is very important that they try to lose weight properly,” said an expert.
She pointed out that it is important to have a healthy balanced diet since teenagers are still growing and their bodies need a lot of nutrition to function well. If they do not take in enough food, they may feel weak and get ill easily. She added, “ 6 , they should keep regular hours and get plenty of exercise to stay energetic and fit. We strongly encourage all teenagers to follow these lifestyle tips, because living well is the safest and most effective way to get into shape.”

Having been rushing all day, I was very 19 and did not want to shop with crowds of other shoppers. But I told myself it was my last stop before going home to put my feet up and watch my husband make dinner. So I gritted my teeth, took a deep breath and 20 the market. People have also reported seeing chickens laying no eggs, bees leaving their homes, and big groups of fish 27 and floating here and there in the hours before a natural disaster hits. It’s hard to answer your question, since not all seismologists(地震学家) or animal experts agree that animals can predict earthquakes. On the other hand, many people who believe that animals can predict earthquakes often have 29 of very strange animal behavior right before the ground shakes. To them, this is evidence that animals can certainly predict earthquakes. In short, the truth is that we aren’t sure. You have waited 45 minutes for the valuable 10 minutes’ break between classes. But when the bell for the next class rings, you can’t believe how 43 time has passed.
If you are familiar with this scene, you’ll know how time flies when you are having fun. Now scientists have thought over a reason why this is the case.
Scans (扫描仪) have shown that patterns of activity in the brain 44 according to how we focus on a task. When we feel 45 , we concentrate (专心于) more on how time is passing. And this makes our brains think the clock is ticking more slowly.
In an experiment carried out by a French laboratory, 12 volunteers watched an image while researchers monitored their brain activity.
The volunteers were told to first concentrate on 46 an image appeared for, then focus on the colour of the image, and thirdly, study both duration and colour. The results showed that the 47 was more active when the volunteers paid attention to more subjects.
It is thought that if the brain is focusing on many aspects of a task, it has to spread its resources, and pays 48 attention to the clock. Therefore, time passes without us really noticing it, and seems to go quickly. If the brain is not so active, it concentrates its full energies on monitoring the passing of time. As a result, time seems to drag.
Next time you feel bored in class, perhaps you should pay more attention to what the teacher is saying!

At five p.m. I stopped at the market to pick up a few necessary things: cream for coffee, eggs for breakfast and pills for my terrible headache.
Having been rushing all day, I was very 19 and did not want to shop with crowds of other shoppers. But I told myself it was my last stop before going home to put my feet up and watch my husband make dinner. So I gritted my teeth, took a deep breath and 20 the market. That’s when I saw her, a baby sitting in a shopping cart, who looked around 9 months old, with blond hair and large blue eyes. We stared at each other. Then I did what I always do with children: I gave her my best smile. That’s a 21 I formed long ago when I became a mother. It started with my first child, in that unforgettable, life-changing moment when he was laid upon my chest and I watched him turn his tiny face up to find me.
At times, over the years, my 22 would fade into a look of fear or worry or anger. But it never let my face for long. It always came back, even on occasion through tears. It happened that same way with my second and third child.
And now, after all these years, I can’t resist smiling at children. I have learned that all children, young and old, need 23 to smile at them. Not just their parents and grandparents, but their teachers and coaches, family and friends. And, yes, even strangers at the market in a rush to get home.
The baby and I smiled at each other. That got a smile in return from every shopper I passed. I waved goodbye and she blew me a kiss.
I was still smiling when I got home and realized I’d forgotten to get the 24 . I didn`t need it, though. My headache was gone.

In fact, we can look 26 to what we know from the ancient Greeks. They noticed that animals acted strangely in the hours before earthquakes. Even now, people talk about dogs that won’t stop barking and cats that won’t come out of hiding before an earthquake. Furthermore, strange behavior like this before earthquakes isn’t limited to pets. Those that disagree say that we should think of other things that 28 animal behavior, such as hunger. On the other hand, many people who believe that animals can predict earthquakes often have 29 of very strange animal behavior right before the ground shakes. To them, this is evidence that animals can certainly predict earthquakes. In short, the truth is that we aren’t sure. Animals might be able to sense earthquakes before they happen, but there is no solid evidence that they can. However, one thing that most seismologists can agree on is that more research is needed. Animals may be the 30 to predicting earthquakes before they happen, and could help save many lives.

More than ten years ago, Hock travelled to his country of birth, Indonesia. He was adopted by Dutch parents at two months old. On the trip he learnt the poor conditions for Indonesian kids.
According to the World Bank, more than 28 million Indonesians still live below the poverty (贫困) line. This is also 31 to see in the country’s schools, which Hock noticed on his visit.
He 32 to start Face This to make a difference. He says, “Instead of focusing on the poor conditions of the schools, we wanted to make use of the optimism (乐观) of the kids at Duduk Atas, the first school we worked with.”
How did Face This start doing that After recognizing schools in need, they set up 33 classes and asked the kids to create drawings, which would then be sent to the Netherlands, and shared with artists all around the world. The artists would then re-imagine the drawings and printed them on T-shirts.
Artists were really interested in that way of drawing from kids. Being able to work together with a kid made them feel 34 . They tried to get back to that way of working.
Money from sales goes 35 back into improving the construction of schools. In the last ten years, the team has donated three schools on the Indonesian islands of Java, Lombok and Flores.
Hock says 36 for the next ten years include expanding the range (范围) beyond T-shirts, extending (扩展) to more Indonesia schools, and working together well with more artists.

Amy Purdy’s challenges began when she was 19. She was working, snowboarding as much as possible, feeling independent and happy. Then she developed a serious illness, bacterial meningitis (脑膜炎). At the hospital, doctors said she had a 2% chance of survival. When Amy 37 came home two and a half months later, she had lost both of her legs below the knee.
Soon Amy got her first pair of artificial (假的) legs. They were so painful and ugly. Amy wondered how she would ever be 38 again. She knew she had to figure out how to live with her new challenges. She asked herself this question: What if her life were a book, and she were the author How would she want her story to go
The question made her start daydreaming. She 39 herself walking, helping others, and snowboarding again. Having such a dream was the first step on her new journey. Four months later, Purdy was snowboarding again — with 40 . She needed better artificial feet and legs, but she couldn’t find anything that worked. In order to live her dream, she had to be creative: she decided to design a pair of legs herself.
Instead of trying to 41 what she calls the “borders” in her life, Amy pushed off them, using them to force herself to reach higher and farther. It’s a strategy(策略) that has worked very well. In 2011 and 2012, Purdy won back-to-back World Cup championships in snowboarding. And that same spring, she inspired millions with her performances on the TV show Dancing with the Stars. She made it all the way to the finals, and got a medal. 42 writing a book about her experiences, Amy has founded an organization to help others with disabilities enjoy sports. She gives talks encouraging people to meet challenges, just as she has done.

About a year ago, a couple with 3 children moved into the apartment next door to me. I never heard any noise from the children, but the parents were always 49 them, in a frightening way. We met often in the hallway when we were coming or going. I always spoke, but the only answer I ever got was a hello from the 4-year-old girl.
I usually go out for breakfast and one day when I returned, they were just coming from their apartment and the little girl was holding the door open for the others. I remained in the car doing unnecessary things 50 I wasn’t in a hurry. The parents were telling her to get in the car immediately. I looked up and saw the little girl was still holding the door open, waiting for me.
As a handicapped (有残疾的) man, I can’t hurry at anything, but I hurried as much as I could and thanked her. She was smiling like a lovely angle. I was so touched by her small act of 51 . That afternoon I was shopping at the K-mart and I saw a white bear. I thought of the girl and said to myself, “I believe she would like it”, so I bought it.
The next day there was a knock on the door and it was the little girl and her father. She was so proud of her bear and thanked me like I had never been thanked before. The mother and father both thanked me.
Now when we meet in the hall we all speak, and in a friendly manner I might add. As time passes, I don’t hear that shouting as often. 52 , hardly at all.
Last night we had about four inches of snow. I looked out at my car and wondered how I was going to keep my doctor’s appointment.
When I opened the outside door, there was my car with all the snow cleaned. I can’t express how I felt at that moment. The man next door was the only person I knew in the whole building, so when I saw him the next day, I asked him if he was the good man that cleaned my snow. He said 53 . He wanted to but his wife said she wanted to do it.
Isn’t it amazing how a 4-year-old girl can change so many things for the better My guardian angel (守护天使) says that good things usually come from the 54 .

“It’s time for Field Day again,” thought Carly as she started the last week of school. Carly was not looking forward to it. “Why does everybody make a big deal out of it ” Carly asked her mom. “Well, it’s supposed to be a fun day and a day to 67 yourself,” said Carly’s mom. “I’m not good at any of those games that are played, and I’m afraid the kids are going to laugh at me. Maybe I can stay home and 68 Field Day,” said Carly.
Mary was Carly’s closest friend, and they walked to school every day. “Aren’t you 69 Field Day ” Mary asked Carly. ”No, I don’t care about such a silly day. No one ever picks me for their team because I’m not good at those games,” answered Carly 70 .
Mary felt bad and she told her mom how unexcited Carly was and wondered what she could do to cheer her friend up. “See if you can get in a game that you know Carly is good at,” 71 Mary’s mom. Mary thought for a moment and said that she knew Carly loved to play horseshoes, and was really good at that game. She was also good at the water balloon toss (投掷) too.
Field Day finally arrived. Mary came by Carly’s house for their daily walk to school. Carly was very quiet on the way to school. “I hear they are going to have horseshoes this year and also a water balloon game,” Mary said. “Really I love horseshoes, and I am pretty good at catching those water balloons,” said Carly. Suddenly, Carly felt more excited about going to school and starting Field Day than she had ever been.
The games began, and Carly had the best Field Day ever! 72 Carly, her team won first place in the water balloon toss, and she got a ribbon (绶带) for second place in horseshoes. “What a great day!” Carly said to Mary. Carly is now looking forward to Field Day next year!

At the scene of a crime
It’s 5:30 a.m, and your phone rings. A police officer says someone broke into a store and took some expensive items. They need you right away because sometimes witnesses may be 73 while the clues(线索) at the scene will always tell the truth. It is your job to study the whole scene for clues that will help catch the thief. You are a crime scene investigator(调查员), and the game is on.
Outside the store, you see a broken window, but there is no glass on the street. There are shoeprints, and marks made by a vehicles’ tires(车辆轮胎). You look at the shoeprints. They’re large, so you’re likely to 74 a man. You photograph the shoe’s pattern. This can tell you the type of shoe. You then measure the space between the shoeprints. You now know how long the person’s steps were. This gives you an idea of the 75 of the thief.
As you follow the shoeprints over to the tire marks, the spaces between the steps get bigger. They lead to the passenger’s side of the vehicle. Now you know the thief probably didn’t work 76 . You photograph the tire marks. They can help you find out the type of vehicle and the direction it went. The most important clues will come from a person’s 77 . You find some fingerprints near the broken window. Using a computer, you can match them with millions of others. You also find a hair at the scene. You keep it, because you know hair contains a person’s DNA.You can 78 this with other people’s DNA.If you find a match for the fingerprint or the DNA, you will know who was in the store.
Will you find the thief You now have a lot of information, so it’s possible. For a crime scene investigator, it’s all in a day’s work.
