I have never taken cooking classes. I learned cooking from my mother because she was interested in teaching me how to cook. The main reason was that when my mother grew up, she didn’t know how to cook. My grandmother never let her stay in the kitchen when she was cooking.
My mother didn’t start to cook until she was 25 years old. In the beginning, it was very hard for her. She had to take cooking classes to prepare meals. Later she decided to teach me how to cook, because she didn’t want me to have the same experience as her.
I remember when I was seven years old, I often helped my mother cook in the kitchen. I was glad to stay with my mother. Sometimes we prepared meals that my mother knew how to make, and sometimes we prepared them from cookbooks. Now, I am really thankful for that experience.
I will do the same with my children because I don’t want them to have the same experience as my mother. If one day I am not with them, I hope that they can be independent and carry on their lives easily.

Different from other children, Hana began to look after her family when she was young. She washed clothes, cleaned the house and cooked meals.
There’s a sad but touching story behind Hana. Hana’s mother, Chie, was ill for a long time. Chie loved her family a lot. In her free time, she loved to write something about her family in her diary. Unluckily, her illness got worse when Hana was nine months old. Chie hoped that she could be lucky to become better. And she wanted to teach Hana to do something. “I expect my daughter to do as much as she can by herself. I just want to help her so that one day she can take care of herself,” Chie wrote in her diary.
And she did. She gave Hana an apron (围裙) as a birthday gift when Hana was four. And Chie taught Hana to cook. She also taught Hana to do other chores. A year later, Chie left Hana and her husband (丈夫), Shingo.
Hana remembered everything that her mother taught her. She once wrote a letter to her mother. She said, “I want to tell you something. I can make noodles now. Aren’t you surprised I’m trying to do my best.”
