Last Christmas, my family spent the holiday in a cabin in the mountains. We were busy following all the holiday plans: preparing the Christmas tree, sending and receiving 21 , and cooking big meals. One night, something unexpected (出乎意料的) 22 .
As we sat by the fire, my little sister asked, “ ls Santa Claus real " She was at that age when things become less 23 , and the magic (魔力)of childhood begins to fade (消逝).
My mom asked, “Well, do you believe in Santa ” “ I want to," my sister answered. “ 24 people say it's all made up (编造的). ”
My dad thought for a while and said, “You know, it could be true that Santa Claus will not visit your room. But he is actually 25 than just that." He continued in a more gentle voice, “Even if (即使) we can't meet Santa in real person, he can 26 bring us hope and joy and his legend also teaches people to 27 and to love. And that is very real, isn't it ”
Thinking about his words, we all sat 28 . I realized that I might have. 29 the magic of the season —the warmth of company, the joy of sharing, and the love from our family. My sister looked up at my parents' eyes and nodded with a big smile.
Days went by and we had so much fun making snowmen, singing songs and cooking meals together. On the 30 night, my sister put a note on the Christmas tree. It was written to Santa. She didn't ask for 31 this time. She wrote, “Thank you for the magic.” At that moment, I 32 something important again: We are easily lost in all those gifts and plans but Christmas is more about believing in the 33 of people--in the small acts of kindness and love.
As we left the second day, I carried the lesson with me. Belief does not really lie in legends but in the choices we make—to doubt 34 to believe in hope, love, and the beauty of the human spirit. I knew that the 35 of the holiday wasn't just for children. It was for all of us, if we chose to believe.

There are so many great films about space that combine the wonderful special effects (特效) with the powerful human imagination. I'm suggesting a few of my favorite space films that can take you somewhere you've never been before without getting you off your sofa.
Apollo 13 (1995)
When Tom Hanks announced “ Houston, we have a problem", you know you are in for a thrilling journey. This film is based on the true story of the Apollo 13 mission (任务) to the moon. The spaceship is broken and the astronauts have to fight against all the difficulties to bring themselves home. Of course, we know they succeed in the end but that doesn't make it any less exciting to watch.
WALL-E (2008)
The environment of the Earth is destructed (破坏) because of humans' greed(贪婪). They have flown off into outer space, leaving robots to clean the rubbish so that humans can return one day. WALL-E is one of the robots but his work is interrupted (打扰) by the arrival of EVE, a robot sent to see the progress. WALL-E falls in love and EVE returns his love. Together, they offer hope to humans.
Avatar (2009)
James Cameron's films are wonderful, and Avatar is one of them. Mankind has attacked the planet Pandora for its natural resources, and the aliens who live on the planet are fighting back. Cameron's Pandora is breathtaking and the eco- message reminds us of how important it is to take care of our planet.
The Martian (2015)
Matt Damon plays an astronaut who is part of a space mission to explore Mars. He meets a
huge storm and now he must face everything the planet can throw at him and try to find a way of sending messages back to the Earth. Two things set this film apart from the others: its amazing special effects and Damon's memorable performance.

When I was 16, my teacher had us write letters to ourselves and promised to send us our letters then. Mine arrived 10 years later when I was living in Paris. My mom forwarded (转寄) it to me, and I remember sitting in my rented room, reading the letter, and marveling (惊叹) at my teenage writing.
Much of that letter was advice on my future life, things like “ Don't work just for money. Don't forget to do what makes you happy." I remember looking around that room, which was dark and small--all that I could afford with what I was making by working at a café . The second half of the letter was parenting advice. “ Be the kind of parent who doesn't stress about little things, like whether they clean their room. Be a cool mom.”
I thought about this letter again the other evening. My 15-year-old daughter shouted at me to get out of her room, the room which 1 did make her clean. For years, I was proud of myself for being the kind of mom who my kids really talked to. We had jokes, parties, and all the laughing.
But now , most of this feels like past tense.
The change in my daughter makes me look back at that letter. Was I also a“demon ” (魔鬼) child with my mother at 16 Was my mom as annoyed with me as I am with my daughter I didn't say much about my mom in the letter, except hoping she would stop smoking. Was my mom not even a thought to me at that age And, is that what is happening now
As a single mom, I am an important person in my daughter's life. She needed me for everything, and honestly, I loved that. Now, there are still needs, but I can't meet many of them.
This is what I should have told my future self: Don't take it personally. Your teenage daughter
will push you away, and it's just normal. You just need to keep loving her... even when it's hard.
I am learning to grow into this new place as a parent. And it' s not about being a “cool"
mom unless (除非), in the end, that's what being a “cool " mom is.
41. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage
A. The writer's mom lives with her in Paris.

D. The writer and her husband can only afford a rented room.

C. Hold more family parties to surprise her daughter.
D. Give her daughter advice but still respect her decision.

Self-driving cars are coming. They will make getting from one place to another safer. They can also reduce traffic accidents and pollution. But how should driverless cars act in emergencies (紧急情况) People disagree on the answer and that might stop the technology according to a new study.
To understand the challenge, imagine a car that suddenly (突然地) meets pedestrians (行人) on the road. It can be too late to stop the car and the car's artificial intelligence(人工智能) must decide whether to take a sudden turn. To save the pedestrians, should the car run off the road or into the coming traffic What if such choices would probably kill the passengers in the car
Researchers studied what people would think of such situations. They found that people mostly agreed that driverless cars should be designed to protect the most people. That included running into walls, which would kill their passengers, to save a larger number of pedestrians. But there is a dilemma(困境).The same group of people want to ride in cars that protect passengers — even if the pedestrians would die. Jean Bonnefon, a researcher at the Toulouse School of Economics, reported the findings in Science.
"Driverless cars can completely change things", says the cowriter Iyad Rahwan. But, he adds, the dilemma they create may slow the coming of this change.
“ Makers of driverless cars are in a difficult situation," Bonnefon's group says. Most buyers want their cars to be programmed to protect themselves. However, it will probably be realized one day that the cars must act for the greater good--they must save the most people. The scientists think this could push away buyers.
Kurt Gray, another researcher at the University of North Carolina, thinks that even if all driverless cars are programmed to protect their passengers in emergencies , traffic accidents could be reduced. Those cars might rarely be dangerous to pedestrians. They “won't speed, won't
drive drunk, and won't text while driving, which would be a win for society."
46. The underlined word “challenge" in Paragraph 2 refers to .
A. the way self-driving cars act in emergencies
B. the pollution that self-driving cars will make
C. the disagreement about self-driving cars' acts
D. self-driving cars’ ability to reduce traffic accidents
47.What can the researchers' study tell us

D. Most people think self-driving cars should protect passengers.
48. What might happen if driverless cars act for the greater good
A. Worse situations for the most people.
B. Fewer buyers of driverless cars.
C. Less danger for passengers.
D. Fewer traffic accidents.
49. According to Kurt Gray, what change might driverless cars bring to society
A. Nobody will drive drunk.
B. All the cars will slow down.
C. Pedestrians will not be harmed.
D. Roads will be safer for pedestrians.
50. What does the writer think of self-driving cars
A. The writer thinks their future is not very clear.
