I learned to carry my master on my back and pull a coach. I learned to wear reins (缰绳) and a bit in my mouth. I did not like them but all the horses had to wear them.
My master had two horses. One of them was Ginger. She was not friendly. She bit and kicked people.
Ginger and I pulled a coach together. The coachman’s name was John. Ginger and I worked very hard. We became friends.
Ginger told me about her life when she was young. She told me, “My master was not kind to me. My reins and bit hurt me. My master did not care.”
Squire Gordon and his men felt sorry for Ginger. They were always kind to her. She stopped biting and kicking people. She became a happy horse.
One day in autumn Squire Gordon went on a long journey. John went with him and I pulled the coach. The weather was rainy and windy. Mr. Gordon and John could not see well in the rain. Then John said, “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”
When we returned home, Squire Gordon told his wife, “We are all safe, thanks to Black Beauty.”

A lot of animals travel from one place to another. We call this migration.
In Africa, large animals, like elephants and zebras, migrate to find food and water. They usually follow the same ways every year.
A lot of birds migrate to find food and better weather, too. They are usually birds that eat insects. They spend the summer in northern Europe, because there are lots of insects there. In the winter there aren't any insects, so the birds fly south to southern Europe and Africa.

Zhang Guimei, who founded a high school for girls to study for free in Lijiang, Yunnan province in 2008, has helped about 1, 200 girls go to college in the past 13 years.
She came up with the idea of setting up a high school especially for girls after she visited the homes of the girls who gave up studying. She learned that most of the dropouts (辍学生) would get married. Poor families couldn’t pay the tuition fees (学费). Some girls had to do chores at home.
