一、阅读理解
First day at school
It was my first day at school in London and I was half-excited and half-frightened. On my way to school I wondered, what questions the other boys would ask me and practiced all the answers, “I am nine years old. I was born here but I haven’t lived here since I was two. I was living in Farley. It’s about thirty miles away. I came back to London two months ago.” I also wondered if it was the rule for boys to fight strangers like me, but I was tall for my age. I hoped they would decide not to risk it.
No one took any notice of me before school. I stood in the centre of the playground, expecting someone to say “hello”, but no one spoke to me.
My teacher was called Mr Jones. There were 42 boys in the class, so I didn’t stand out there, either, until the first lesson of the afternoon. Mr Jones was very fond of Charles Dickens, so he asked several boys if they knew Dickens’ birthplace, but no one guessed right. A boy called Brian, the biggest in the class, said, “Timbuktu”,and Mr Jones went red in the face. Then he asked me. I said, “Portsmouth”,and everyone stared at me because Mr Jones said I was right. This didn’t make me very popular, of course. “He thinks he’s clever,” I heard Brian say.
After that, we went out to the playground to play football. I was in Brian’s team, and he obviously had Dickens in mind because he told me to go in goal. No one ever wanted to be the goalkeeper.
“He’s big enough and useless enough,” Brian said when someone asked him why he had chosen me.
As the boy kicked the ball hard along the ground to my right, I threw myself down quickly and saved it. All my team crowded round me. My bare knees were grazed and bleeding. Brian took out a handkerchief and offered it to me.
“Do you want to join my gang (team) ” he said.
At the end of the day, I was no longer a stranger.

The human body is designed to move. But modern lifestyles and office jobs rarely give us the chance to move around. As we know, we sit while we’re eating, we sit in the car and we sit while we're watching TV. And many of us sit for many hours at work.
New research shows that sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years. Peter Katzmarzyk, a scientist at the University of Louisiana in the southern United States, says that sitting is ubiquitous in our lives, meaning it is something we do all the time, everywhere.
However, Mr.Katzmarzyk says even that does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours. He also says you may exercise often. “We can’t throw away physical activity. It’s extremely important. We have 60 years of research showing us that.”
Mr.Katzmarzyk and his colleagues are part of a new generation of researchers studying how sitting all day affects length of life. “Studies that have assessed the relationship between sitting and mortality (死亡率)or television viewing and mortality are very rare. There have only been a few of them, actually five or six now,in the last four or five years.” They found that cutting television time to less than two hours a day could add one-point four years to life.
Luckily, change is already coming to some offices, especially in the design of desks. A “standing desk” lets people stand while they are working. Another new design is called the “treadmill desk”. A treadmill is an exercise machine that lets you walk in one place. Even some U.S. schools are beginning to experiment with desks that are part bicycle to keep children moving, That’s one of the strategies that many companies are using now.
Mr. Katzmarzyk also says studying this problem has inspired his team to make a few changes in their own lives.
4.The underlined word “ubiquitous” is the closest .
A.危险的 B.尴尬的
C.舒适的 D.普遍的

7.Why are the desks of all kinds designed for those who sit more

C.To offer them the chance to exercise.
D.To seek pleasure while working.
In the summer between my first year and second year in college, I was invited to be an instructor at a high school camp. On the first day, when we were dancing and playing games, I noticed a boy under the tree who was small and thin. His shyness made him appear weak. I walked towards him, introduced myself and invited him to join in the activities and meet some new people. He quietly replied, "No, I really don't want to do this." I could understand that he was in a new world but I knew it wouldn't be right to force him, either. Actually, the boy didn't need a close talk but a friend.
At lunch the next day, I was leading camp songs when 1 saw the boy under the tree sitting alone. I tried again with the same invitation, but he refused once again. That evening I was told the boy's name was Tommy. Then I asked the campers to pay special attention to the boy and spend time with him when they could.
The days went by and the time came when we had to leave. We held a big, warm party to celebrate the closing of the camp. All the campers shared their wonderful moments. To my surprise. 1 found the boy from under the tree dancing joyfully with two girls. I couldn't believe it was the same person.
In October of my second year, I received a phone call from Tommy's mother. She told me that Tommy was hit by a car and killed. I offered my deep sadness. The mother said: “'Tommy mentioned you so many times. I want you to know that he went back to school and made new friends with confidence. You made a difference for Tommy during his last months.”
At that moment, I realized how easy it was to give a bit of yourself every day. You may never know how much each gesture may mean to someone else. I hope that everyone can pay attention to their own “boy under the tree”.

阅读理解
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Even if you know some new students, you still feel nervous that you don’t know any upperclassmen (高年级学生) and teachers. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces
Most high schools welcome new students before school actually starts. These are helpful not only because you learn your way around the buildings and get to meet some of your teachers, but also because you get to meet new students. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.
When you talk to people, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.
The work in high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. The work in high school builds on what you learned in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging (有挑战性的). If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
High school also has more activities after class than middle school, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
Middle school taught you the basics of academics, time management, and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. High school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent (独立的) and responsible (有责任的).
12.When new students come to school on the first day they usually feel _________.
A.proud B.nervous C.excited D.happy
13.What are new students probably worried about
A.The learning tasks.
B.The difficulty in communication.
C.The way they deal with teachers.
D.The training in time management.
14.The passage is written for _________.
A.new students in high school
B.new students’ parents
C.middle school teachers
D.upperclassmen in high school
15.The last paragraph is mainly about _________.
A.what you’ll learn in high school
B.what you learned in middle school
C.the differences between middle school and high school
D.the importance of being more independent and responsible
How to Handle Being the New Kid at School
Being the new kid at school can be a terrible experience! It might seem like everybody else knows exactly how to act. But remember you aren’t alone. Actually, everybody is nervous on their first day and you can fit right in with the help of the following tips.
Plan ahead the night before. 16 Lay out your first day outfit (全套服装), pack a lunch, and make sure you have all your school supplies ready to go. Planning ahead can help you get a good night’s sleep and feel less nervous about your first day.
17 Make sure your clothes are cleaned and pressed and that you’ve showered, brushed your teeth. If you’re hoping to attract friends with similar interests, try wearing a shirt with your favorite show, musician, or sports team on it. 18
Do your best to stay calm and positive. It’s normal to feel nervous or anxious when you’re the new kid at school. If you feel nervous, start by taking some deep breaths. 19 You can listen to music that makes you feel calm or happy. Try imagining a good first day in your mind instead of keeping thinking about things that could go wrong.
20 Don’t come in on the first day with your head hanging down, your shoulders lowered, and your eyes on the floor. Walk with your head held up, your back straight, and a bright expression on your face. Make eye contact with other people, and smile if they look at you or speak to you.
A.Use your body language to show confidence.

One day, my brother and I were in our apartment. My parents had both gone for a party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching TV. All of a sudden, the doorbell rang. Ding dong! Ding dong! My younger brother had rushed to the door before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the door and opened it.
Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different from other people and said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he could talk with them.
Without thinking, my brother said,“No.” He asked if we would like to buy some comic books (漫画书), which he was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents’ permission. However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention to enter our house.
Then, I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house. He forced me to tie up my brother’s hands with the rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but tied it in a special way so my brother could untie (解开) it himself as we often did. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen.

And as a result, the man was caught.
Just at the same time our parents came back home. The police asked my family to go to the police station. At the police station the police told us that the man was a wanted robber, who pretended to sell comic books and they had been looking for him for a long time. The police praised my brother and me for our bravery. After we went back home, I told my parents the whole story. They were thankful that we didn’t get hurt but they scolded me for not stopping my brother from opening the door to strangers. I learned a lesson on safety and responsibility.
