Venus is an “unfriendly” planet. Because of its thick cloud, you can’t see the surface (表面). In many ways Venus is like the earth. It has active volcanoes (火山), mountains and valleys, too. But Venus is too hot for life. It has the hottest temperature of the planets in our solar system, about 480℃. Besides, the earth lets heat out through volcanoes, hot springs, but Venus lets heat out in a different way. Venus has no moons. Scientists call Venus the earth’s sister planet because Venus and the earth are almost the same size. For a long time, most scientists thought that Venus probably had plants, animals, and possibly even human beings. However, because Venus is so hot, it is impossible for anything to live there.

( )31. What is it like to live in space ( )32. What do astronauts do in space ( )33. How much air do astronauts need to survive in space ( )34. How do astronauts eat in space ( )35. How do I become NASA astronaut A. Today astronauts spend months living and working in space aboard space stations. They spend their days exercising, doing experiments on equipment, growing plants and studying the effects of space on the human body. B. Living in space is not the same as living on Earth. In space, astronauts' bodies change. On Earth, our lower body and legs carry our weight(体重). This helps keep our bones and muscles strong. In space, astronauts float(漂浮). C. Astronauts need about 2.6 kilograms of air a day while on the International Space Station (ISS), and when they do a spacewalk they must take their air with them. Astronauts don’t bring all the air with them when they leave Earth. D. Right now, we know that it's possible for the astronauts to eat, chew and swallow in outer space, even in zero gravity(零重力), just like the same way we do it on earth. The only difference is that the food flies in outer space. E. Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin were the first of 12 human beings to walk on the Moon. Four of America's moonwalkers are still alive: Aldrin (Apollo 11), David Scott (Apollo 15), Charles Duke (Apollo 16), and Harrison Schmitt (Apollo 17). In all, 24 American astronauts made the trip from Earth to the Moon between 1968 and 1972. F. In order to become a NASA astronaut, someone needs to be a U.S. citizen(市民) and must get a master's degree in biological science, physical science, computer science, engineering or math. G. Sally Ride was the first woman astronaut from the US to go into space. She flew into space twice. Sally Ride was born in 1951 in Los Angeles, California. As a little girl, she loved to play tennis and wanted to be a tennis player in the future. Later she changed her mind. She went to Stanford University and studied science. While Dr Ride was at university, she read an ad (广告) in the newspaper looking for students interested in the space programme. She applied (申请) at once and became an astronaut in NASA in 1978. In 1983, Dr Ride flew on the space shuttle (航天飞机) Challenger and became the first American woman in space. She spent six days there. Later she said, “The thing that I'll remember most about the mission (任务) is that it was fun. In fact, I'm sure it was the most fun I'll ever have in my life.” She flew again on Challenger in 1984. At the end of her second mission, Dr Ride had spent 343 hours in space, which was over 14 days. In 1986, Dr Ride was getting ready for a third mission when Challenger exploded (爆炸). She then studied what had gone wrong with the shuttle. Later, she became part of a group at NASA to make plans for future space missions. In 1987, Dr Ride left NASA and began working and teaching at Stanford University. She died in her home in 2012. Although she was famous as the first American woman in space, she said she always thought of herself just one way: as an astronaut.
