Exciting new research suggests there could be living things in the clouds above Venus, whose orbit brings it closer to the Earth than any other planets. A study of Venus’ atmosphere shows a type of gas is in its atmosphere. The gas, on the Earth, is only produced by very small creatures. If such creatures are found on Venus, it might be the first evidence of life existing somewhere else in the universe.
Scientists found the gas in thick clouds about 35 miles above Venus’ equator. On the Earth, the gas is produced by special forms of life that live in airless environments such as swamps (沼泽). It can also be made in factories but neither explanation helps scientists to understand what the gas is doing on Venus.
To get to the bottom of the mystery, the scientists have now made their data public in the hope that others may be able to find a clue that they have missed. Professor Greaves explained that the gas might be produced by some non-living natural process that we haven’t yet discovered, but for now, the idea of life on Venus has to be considered. She added, “In my whole career, I have been interested in the search for life elsewhere in the universe, so I’m just blown away that this is even possible. We are sincerely encouraging other people to tell us what we might have missed. This is how science works.” If scientists on the Earth are unable to find an explanation, then a future mission to Venus might be needed to prove whether or not life exists there. The US space agency NASA is already planning an exploration that they would float on a balloon through the clouds of Venus, and this could be launched sometime in the 2030s.
24.What can we know about Venus according to Paragraph 1
A.The thickness of its clouds.
B.The existence of a kind of gas.
C.The distance from it to the Earth.
D.The exact temperature of its atmosphere.
25.Why have the scientists made their data public
A.To seek others’ help to find the truth.
B.To change the wrong conclusion before.
C.To prove the existence of life on Venus.
D.To announce their successful experience.
26.What does the underlined phrase “blown away” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Impressed. B.Upset. C.Grateful. D.Doubtful.
27.Where does the text probably come from
A.A travel brochure. B.A medical report.
C.A science magazine. D.A museum handbook.

Bactrian camels in the Gobi usually give birth to a baby camel every second year. But because of the terrible weather conditions, it is common for a mother or baby to die during or after delivery. The result is often lonely babies and sad mothers who need one another.
After centuries in the desert, the locals have developed a unique musical practice when they want a mother camel to accept a newborn baby camel. When the practice starts, a musician plays his instrument, usually a Mongolian flute. The mother and baby are tied together, and another musician begins to sing: “khuus, khuus, khuus.”
At first, the mother either pays no attention to the baby or treats it badly. The “coaxer (劝诱者),” at this point, changes the music based on the behavior. The singer begins to copy the sound of the camel’s walking, running and voices. After many hours of this, the mother and baby are in tears, and are joined for life.
However, each year fewer and fewer young people are willing to learn and pass on this tradition. In addition, more and more Mongolian families are sending their children away to study and live in cities, and those who leave almost never return. The young people who remain in the desert struggle then to raise families that can help raise camels and keep the traditions alive. On top of that, many have discovered that motorbikes are cheaper than camels. All of this are killing the traditional way of life.
A few Mongolians have turned to the United Nations to help save this practice. In 2015, they added it to their “List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding,” but it’s hard to know what influence this can have beyond recognizing the existence of the practice.
28.Why do the locals develop the Mongolian practice
A.To help baby camels get along with hosts.
B.To make mother camels give birth more often.
C.To calm down mother camels during delivery.
D.To strengthen mother and baby camels’ relationships.
29.What can be inferred about the coaxing practice
A.It requires great skill. B.It lasts for a few days.
C.The music is slow and sad. D.The practice is still popular today.
30.Why is the practice in danger
A.Because of the number of camels.
B.Because of the difficulty of the practice.
C.Because of the changes in locals’ lifestyle.
D.Because of the terrible weather in the desert.
31.What’s the attitude of the author towards the practice
A.Positive. B.Uncertain. C.Disappointed. D.Indifferent.

Humans have been living and working on the space station for over 20 years. Their meals are packaged, though sometimes astronauts receive fresh treats from resupply missions. The longer that packaged food is stored, the more it loses nutrients like vitamin C and vitamin K.
Astronauts have successfully grown 10 different crops on the space station since 2015 and had the chance to sample (品尝) each one. The International Space Station hosted a party for astronauts on Friday as they celebrated the harvest of the first chili peppers grown in space. The astronauts finally had a chance to taste the peppers after initially kicking off the plant experiment on the space station in July.
Plant Habitat-04 is one of the most complex plant experiments on the orbiting laboratory to date because peppers take much longer to grow than the previous experiment plants. After growing for four months, the peppers were harvested on Friday.
Peppers provide a great source of vitamin C, as well as other key nutrients. Pepper plants self-pollinate (自花授粉), so they are easy to grow, and they are a pick-and-eat crop that doesn’t have to be cooked. They are also safe to eat raw.
A side effect of life in zero gravity is that astronauts often lose some of their taste and smell, so spicy or well-seasoned foods are a favorite. Adding fresh greens or peppers to the menu allows astronauts to liven up their regular meals. But growing and lending to the plants can also produce other benefits.
Astronauts have described the joy from seeing—as well as smelling and caring for—leafy green plants on the space station that remind them of Earth.
“Growing colorful vegetables in space can have long-term benefits for physical and psychological health,” said Matt Romeyn, the principal investigator for the experiment. “We are discovering that growing plants and vegetables with colors and smells helps to improve astronauts’ well-being.”
32.How is the food astronauts eat on the space station
A.Always fresh. B.Lack of nutrients.
C.Never tasty. D.Full of vitamins.
33.What makes Plant Habitat-04 one of the most complex plant experiments
A.The technology. B.Growing process.
C.The varieties of plants. D.Growing time required.
34.Which is the most probable reason for adding peppers to food for astronauts
A.Peppers can restore appetite. B.Peppers can improve memory.
C.Peppers help prevent diseases. D.Peppers are delicious.
35.Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A.The Fun of Growing Chili Peppers in Space
B.The Agricultural Goal in the Space Mission
C.The First Chili Peppers Grown in Space
D.'The Chili Peppers Used in the Space Mission

Benefits of Space Exploration
On April 12, 1961, the Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to journey to outer space. 36 Why should we spend so much time and money to explore dangerous environments Well, the answer is simple. The benefits of space, including medical, technological and economic benefits, are more than the dangers of it.
● Medical benefits.
37 Analyzing the effects of zero-gravity on blood circulation led to many discoveries on how to prevent some types of heart failure. And the experiments and measurements of bone strength and bone loss in astronauts have helped doctors better understand bone diseases.
● 38
The space race has led to technological advancements in the shortest period of time, such a vacuum—sealed (真空密封的) food, fireproof materials and modern vacuum cleaners. Today, we still use them in our daily lives. Yet, we even don’t know that some NASA engineers originally developed them for he Apollo program that took humankind to the moon. 39 Who knows what kind of new technologies could be developed that will make our lives easier in the future.
● Creation of STEM jobs.
Space exploration is one of the industries that require the largest percentage of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) jobs. A lot of those jobs are positions for engineers, data analysts, doctors, biologists and so on. Although these positions require highly qualified people to fill them, they are some of the highest-paid jobs in the market. 40
A.Space tourism industry. B.Development of new technologies. C.Is exploring space a waste of time and money D.As you can see, it is important for us to keep pushing the limits of space exploration. E.So the growing space industry creates high-paid jobs. F.The medical benefits of space exploration reach every area of the human body. G.The age of space exploration started that day.

Michael was a 13-year-old boy who was very honest and diligent. Recently, he had transferred (转学) to another school, so he had no friends in the new school yet. On Monday morning, he was nearly late for school. The night before, his family attended his cousin’s wedding and reached home late, which was why he couldn’t get up on time as usual.
At school, Michael could not pay attention to anything but waited for the bell to ring so that he could buy something to eat. The moment the bell rang, he quickly opened his schoolbag to find his money, but just then he remembered that he had left for school in a hurry in the morning and forgotten to take money. He looked under his books, hoping to find some money but there was nothing.
Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench in front of the canteen (食堂). He saw a few of his classmates there, among whom was Steven. He was one of the richest kids in his class, but he was a very arrogant (傲慢的) boy who thought everyone else was a loser. But as Michael was new, he didn’t know much about Steven.
When he went towards Steven and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch, Steven laughed a lot and said, “I knew you were a loser, maybe a beggar ” Steven laughed out so loud that other kids also heard and made fun of the situation. He didn’t answer Steven, and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.
When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet. He picked it up and recognized it was Steven’s, as he remembered Steven showing it to his friends and telling that his uncle bought it for him from the UK. There was a lot of money inside for a kid.

At first, Michael wanted to keep it a secret and punished Steven. But it was not easy. Throwing a glance at Steven, who was chatting happily, Michael felt a bit sorry for the embarrassment he was going to face. Just at the moment Michael gasped and cried out in alarm, “Oh, where is my wallet ” Some gossips began. Overwhelmed by guilt, Michael quickly picked up the wallet and walked to Steven, “I found it over there, and I think it is yours.” Recalling what he had done to Michael, Steven suddenly hesitated to take the wallet.
“Why are you giving back ” Steven asked. What replied him was a sigh, “Because it belongs to you.” The air seemed still and it became weird that no one said a single word. Just at this moment, Michael’s stomach seemed to be the first to break the awkwardness by growling loud. To his astonishment, Steven reached out his hand, saying, “What about having lunch together Of course, my treat.” It was on that very day that Michael made his first friend in the new school, and he truly understood the value of sincerity and honesty in a relationship.

M: Yes, it is. My father would like me to go there. He and my grandpa both went there. But I’d like to get my own way. I like music, and I want to be a student of Berklee College of Music.
W: You did a pretty job on the school New Year party last year. You have a gift for that.
M: And I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately.

Good evening, viewers. Welcome to Star TV. Today’s news program will last longer than before as it will give details of national election results. We have had to cancel Play of the Month which was due to be shown tonight. It can now be seen tomorrow on Thursday evening and will be repeated on Saturday morning. Instead, tonight, we will be showing a recorded interview with the famous writer Doris Mooring. Despite being 90 years old, Doris has recently published a new novel, her 18th book so far. It tells the story of a family who have lived in the same small village for several centuries, and looks at the changes that have happened there over several lifetimes. Doris Mooring drew on her own experiences for the novel, and it is set to become another best-seller. The author was interviewed last month by Dennis Baker for the Sight and Sound series. But before we show the interview, here is the latest news and weather with Martin Ireland.
