I have three kids and I make them do housework. However, my mother doesn’t agree with me. She thinks I’m too strict. In her opinion, it is adults’ job to do housework.
Our family is made up of five family members. No one in the family is more important than another, so each member should help with chores. I don’t ask my kids to do the same chores, because their ages are different.
At the end of the day, after they finish playing with their toys, I ask them to put the toys away. If they don’t, they will have to say goodbye to their toys. I expect my kids to set the table at night and help fold their own clothes. I don’t think I’m asking too much.
I know they are tired after a long day’s study at school, but that’s life —harsh(严酷)but real. I don’t want to pay them for doing some chores. They live in the house, so they should help out with some things in the house. No one is going to pay them for cleaning up their rooms later in life and I’ll not start doing it now.
Some parents protect their kids to much from anything unpleasant(使人不愉快的)and make their kids’ lives too comfortable and safe, but I’m not interested in that way. I hope my kids are able to look after themselves and can be independent early.

A House of Memories
It was a fine afternoon. Eddie was putting his toys into boxes. His family were about to move to a new house, and they needed their home cleaned for the next family. Eddie looked around his big and empty house, feeling a little sad. He liked this house and his friends—he did not really want to move.
Eddie followed his mother to the attic(阁楼). Eddie’s father was already up there, looking through boxes of old photos. He handed Eddie one. It did not have much color left, but showed a young boy playing baseball in his backyard.
“Who is that ” Eddie asked.
“That is me, Eddie, when I was your age,” his father replied.
“Look! Here’s one of me,” Eddie’s mother said, handing Eddie another photo. In it, a young girl was playing hopscotch (跳房子).
“You guys were kids ” Eddie asked.
“We weren’t born this old,” Eddie’s mother said, laughing.
Eddie looked at the photos some more. He had never seen his dad or mom playing baseball or hopscotch or other games. They were always working, cooking, cleaning, and driving. It was hard to imagine them as kids playing in their backyards.
Looking out, Eddie could see his backyard. He did have a lot of fun there, but he was not a little kid anymore. At the new house, he would go to a new school. He wanted to try out for the school soccer team and join the drama club. Maybe it was a good time to move after all.
As the family went down from the attic, Eddie picked up their camera, took it to his parents and said, “Mom, Dad, please take a photo of me playing in our backyard!”

One day, when I finished raising money for a charity and was on the train back home, I put down my phone and started writing thank-you notes to people who helped.
When I got off the train, I felt amazingly good. The next day, I wrote more thank-yous and the same feeling of happiness hit me again. I suddenly had the idea: Why not keep on doing this for every day of the year
To keep on task, I decided to pick out a different theme for each month. January was charity. February would be neighbours. And many names came to my mind right away.
While writing the notes, I realized I spent too much time on the phone moving from app to app, enjoying other people’s lives. Writing thank-you notes allowed me the time to do something different, paying more attention to my own life.
In the following months, I wrote to my friends, doctors and teachers. In July, my “food” month, I wrote to Julie, who used to cook at my favorite restaurant. It went like this:
Dear Julie,
I find myself missing you lately. Thank you for hosting and cooking beautiful food. Jake and I will never forget the cake you made for our wedding. We talk about it every year.
Thank you. We miss you.
Love,
Gina
I was happy to receive a note back from her. Julie replied, “I don’t think I’ve ever received such a touching letter before. I’m going through a hard time right now, and this helps.”
On December 31, I wrote my last card—to Jake, my husband, and our two kids. And I took a picture of us, so I could remember the feeling coming up inside me. Gratitude.

A.writing thank-you notes B.taking the train back home
C.putting the phone away D.raising money for charities
88.How did Julie most probably feel after reading the note from Gina
A.Shy and surprised. B.Pleased and relaxed.
C.Nervous and excited. D.Moved and encouraged.
89.The theme of the December notes might be “________”.
A.charity B.neighbour C.family D.food
90.What did Gina get by doing her task according to the passage
A.Many thanks from her neighbors. B.More time to enjoy her own life.
C.More help from people around her. D.Happy moments to be with friends.
