Shyness can be an unhappy feeling. But the good news is, you're not alone. Scientists say that more than 40 percent of teenagers and adults consider themselves shy. Shyness is feeling a little nervous or as if you want to hide when you're around other people or in a new situation.
______ Scientists say such things as genetics(遗传), life experiences, and environment can influence whether a person is shy. For example, in some families, everybody seems to be shy.
What happens if you are shy Well, being shy may cause you to avoid or miss opportunities you would enjoy.
How do people overcome(克服) shyness This is what Gilbert tells us. "When I started off trying to get over being shy, I decided to do little steps at a time, including practicing smiling and saying hi to people. And it worked for me."
But shyness is not the kind of thing that most people can get over overnight. Overcoming shyness takes time and needs practice.
Here are some tips given by scientists.
Think of what to talk about before you leave home. Prepare things to talk about before you're in a social situation. For example, if you know your classmates are interested in an upcoming event, learn about it so you can join in the conversations.
Let people know you're shy. If you're shy, just show it. Instead of letting people guess, tell them the truth. Explain that you are shy and feel nervous but enjoy talking to people.
Make things easy for the other person. Remember, you're not the only shy person around. Do what you think might help others feel good—for example, say hello or smile.
Pick one social skill to practice at a time. Start simply. For example, smile or be the first person to say hi. Choose skills you feel comfortable enough with to practice for a day, a week, a month, or even a year.

A. Correctly. B. Suddenly. C. Slowly. D. Finally.
4.Which of the following is the right way to overcome shyness
A. Don't let others know that you are shy.
B. Wait for others to say hello to you first.
C. Choose several skills to practice at a time.
D. Get ready before you join in a social situation.

Think about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources, as well as one of the oldest. Something shows that windmills (风车) began to be used in ancient Iran (伊朗) back in the seventh century BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power.
For many centuries, people used windmills to make wheat (小麦) into flour (面粉) or get water from deep underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in faraway areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by the 1940s when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were hardly used.
During the 1970s, people started becoming more cared about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity. People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would run out one day. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher costs. Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind.
5.From the first paragraph, what can we know about wind and windmills
A. Wind is the cleanest, richest and newest power source.
B. Windmills were first introduced to Middle East during 1100s.
C. Windmills were used in ancient Iran in the 7th Century BC.
D. Armies used windmills in Europe and the Middle East.
6.What did people use windmills to do for many centuries
A. To help make flour from wheat.
B. To help get water from the river.
C. To help make electric lights.
D. To help dig wells in faraway areas.
7.Why was wind rediscovered during the 1970s
A. Because coal and gas had been used up.
B. Because it was cheaper to produce electricity.
C. Because it's cleaner than other sources.
D. Because it could only be used in faraway areas.
C
What will man be like in the future—in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now We can only make a guess, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today. For man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an obvious(明显的)example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average(平均), men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time, so we may guess that man will continue to grow taller.
Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brains abilities. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and finally we shall need larger ones. This is likely to bring about a physical change—the head, especially the forehead, will grow larger.
Nowadays our eyes are in constant(不断地)use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over very long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive(敏感的)because they are used a great deal in modern life.
But what about hair It will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both men and women are likely to be bald(秃头的).
Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive(有吸引力的)creature to look at. This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.
8.The passage tells us about ________.
A. how man’s life will be in the future
B. how future man will look like
C. the fact that man’s organs will function differently in the future
D. the fact that man is growing uglier as time passes
9.There is evidence(证据)that man is changing, ________.
A. he has been growing taller over the past 500 years
B. he has got stronger eyes than he ever had
C. his hair is getting thinner and thinner
D. his limbs are getting weaker because he tends to make less use of them
10.Future man will probably ________.
A. have smaller eyes B. have larger eyes
C. see better D. have to wear better glasses
11.The reason for believing that future man will be different is that he ________.
A. will grow stronger B. never stops changing
C. hopes for a change D. will live a different life
