One possible version :
When they tried in vain to rescue the brothers and Tabatha, a risky idea came to them. To keep themselves from losing their footing in the rip current, they began holding on to one another to form a human chain extending from the beach all the way out to the struggling boys and Tabatha. They stayed linked closely and managed to ensure they were safe by making their feet firmly planted in the sand. However, that required more links. Shaun spotted other swimmers on the beach and shouted," Don ' t just stand there! Come and help."
By then, more swimmers had also noticed the group in trouble and rushed to join the human chain. One by one, link by link, total strangers walked into the waves and grasped one another by the hands, determined that no one would die on that beach. At last, they made it and Tabatha and the two brothers were saved!" Those people on the beach are angels on the Earth," said Roberta." Whether it is the first person or the last person in the chain, they are all our heroes, who helped get our family out of trouble."

Picking the right hotel for your trip is very important for tourists in Athens as it’s a fairly sprawling city with a
lot of different neighborhoods to choose from. To help you choose, here’s my list of the best hotels in Athens:
1. Athens Center Square Hotel
In Plaka, this hotel has a minimalist design with welcoming pastel colors throughout, and most rooms have a
view of the Acropolis(雅典卫城). Rooms are simple but decently sized, with flat-screen TVs, desks, mini fridges,
air conditioning. The delicious buffet breakfast is complimentary and quite expansive, featuring Greek and
American cuisine. There’s also free coffee and tea in the lobby all day long.
2. Athensdot
This newer property is in Psyrri, has a cool, pop-art design throughout, with large scale drawings on the walls
and bright bursts of red everywhere. Rooms vary from internal rooms with no window to rooms with a balcony and
views of the Acropolis. While there’s no breakfast served at the property, there’s a cute 24-hour café just a few
doors down that serves food at all hours.
3. Coco-Mat Hotel
This design-forward 4-star hotel, run by the mattress company Coco-Mat, is in the heart of Kolonaki, a quiet
neighborhood renowned for its upscale boutiques and art galleries. All rooms are equipped with high-quality
mattresses, and you can even choose your pillow from a menu with 12 different pillow types. There’s a fantastic
Greek breakfast buffet in the mornings.
4. Plaka Hotel
Comfortable and friendly, Plaka Hotel is (you guessed it) in the heart of Plaka. You’ll find the majority of
ruins and tourist attractions here. This simply decorated hotel boasts the starry scenery of the Acropolis from both
in-room balconies and the rooftop terrace bar/restaurant. There’s also a complimentary (and huge) buffet breakfast
featuring local specialties.
21. Which one can provide a variety of pillows
A. Athens Center Square Hotel B. Athensdot

It’s been three decades since The Color Purple (1985) brought Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel to
life. The 1985 film earned 11 Academy Award nominations with its heart-wrenching yet inspiring story of a young
Black woman getting through the hardships of rural Georgia in the early 1900s. The Color Purple 2023 film is a
musical adaptation with a different vibe, though according to award-winning filmmaker Dawn Porter, it’s still “a
timeless story of love, friendship and power.”
Oprah Winfrey—the film’s producer—has encouraged viewers to wear purple when seeing the movie,
referring to its holiday release as a “purple Christmas.” In a video posted to her Instagram account in May, she said,
“OK, y’all have seen the trailer, and I’m giving you six months to get your outfit together for opening day. All
things purple. What you gonna wear Color purple.” And she’s led the way to promote the movie at press events,
award shows, talk shows and early screenings.
But beyond pure marketing, purple holds a greater meaning here. According to cultural critics, it’s a symbol of
power, ambition and luxury, as well as creativity, independence and peace—things the movie’s main character,
Celie, does not have due to years of domestic violence. Thus, it’s very much a cultural moment when people wear
purple in solidarity(团结一致) to support the movie and embrace this theme of empowerment, just like wearing
pink to see Barbie (and black to see Oppenheimer, for that matter).
Thirty-three years later, The Color Purple continues to attract audiences, especially Black women. It’s these
themes of sisterhood, spirituality and self-discovery that make the book and its adaptations so timeless.
“Shakespeare can be performed so many times and in so many forms,” Porter says. “This is a classic text that has
the same power.”
24. What is the difference between the old and new film versions of The Color Purple
A. The old attracts more audience.
B. Only the old is a timeless story.
C. The new is adapted freely with a vibe.
D. A different art style is brought into the new.
27. Which of the statements below is wrong
A. The film’s first screening is on Christmas day.
B. The film tells a story of a woman without suffering.
C. Oprah Winfrey urges people to wear purple.
D. Oprah Winfrey tries every means to advertise her film.
26. Why do people wear purple to theaters
A. Because people respond to Oprah Winfrey’s post to wear purple.
B. Because people back up the film and accept its theme.
C. Because people get misled by the marketing campaign.
D. Because people always wear different colors to watch films.
27. What is the main purpose of the last paragraph
A. To explain the permanence of The Color Purple
B. To stress the achievement of The Color Purple

Inside a fishbowl, the goldfish — a species of carp native to East Asia, bred for aesthetic delight and
traditionally believed to bring good fortune — is among the easiest of pets to keep. But released into the wild, the
seemingly humble goldfish, freed from glass boundaries, can grow to large proportions. They can even kill off
native marine wildlife and help destroy fragile and economically valuable ecosystems.
“They can eat anything and everything,” said Christine Boston, an aquatic research biologist with Fisheries
and Oceans Canada. Over the past several years, Ms. Boston and her colleagues have been tracking invasive
goldfish in Hamilton Harbour, which is on the western tip of Lake Ontario(安大略湖), about 35 miles southwest of
Toronto.
Their study, published last month in the Journal of Great Lakes Research, could help pinpoint goldfish
populations for culling, said Ms. Boston, who is the lead author. “We found out where they are before they start
spawning(产卵),” she said. “That’s a good opportunity to get rid of them.”
The fast-growing female goldfish, Ms. Boston noted, can also reproduce several times in one season. “They
have the resources,” she added, “and they can take advantage of them.” Their football-shaped bodies can swell to a
size that makes them too large a meal for predators(捕食者) — up to about 16 inches long. The feral goldfish are
also destructive, uprooting and consuming plants that are home to native species.
Nicholas Mandrak, a professor of biological sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough, studies in the
“dramatically increase” of the wild population in the past two decades. Their spawning explosion, he said, resulted
partly from people in densely-populated areas releasing pets in urban ponds. He added, environmental managers
tend to forget the goldfish. “They just assume, ‘It’s been there for 150 years — there’s nothing we can do about
it.’”
The problem is not unique to Canada. In Australia, a handful of unwanted pet goldfish and their offspring took
over a river in the country’s southwest. And the discovery of football-size creatures in a lake in 2021 even led
British officials to beg their citizens: “Please don’t release your pet goldfish into ponds and lakes!”
People wrongly believe that because goldfish are “small and cute” they won’t pose a problem when released
into the wild, said Anthony Ricciardi, a professor of invasion ecology at McGill University in Montreal.
Goldfish, he added, are just a small part of a vast invasion of non-native species whose outcomes can be
unpredictable, and in some cases, are worsened by climate change.
“Under human influence, beasts are moving faster farther in greater numbers, reaching parts of the planet they
could never reach before,” he said. “We’re talking about the redistribution of life on Earth.”
28. Which of the statements about the goldfish is correct
A. Their place of origin is Canada.
B. They are capable of reproducing.
C. They will grow well over 16 inches.
D. They only invade Lake Ontario.
29. What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 mean
A. Killing B. Controlling C. Catching D. Observing
30. All of the following statements are the reasons for the spawning explosion Except:
A. Citizens wrongly set free the fish.
B. Climate change has a negative impact.
C. The environmental management is absent.
D. The food increases in habitats.
31. What is the best title for the text

Last week, I sent the same request to ChatGPT, the latest artificial-intelligence chatbot from OpenAI. “Upon
the Firth of Forth, a bridge doth stand,” it began. In less than a minute, the program had created in full a rhyming
Shakespearean sonnet(莎士比亚十四行诗). Tools like ChatGPT seem poised to change the world of poetry — and
so much else — but poets also have a lot to teach us about artificial intelligence. If algorithms(算法) are getting
good at writing poetry, it’s partially because poetry was always an algorithmic business.
Even the most rebellious(叛逆的) poets follow more rules than they might like to admit. When schoolchildren
are taught to imitate the structure of sonnet, they are effectively learning to follow algorithmic constraints. Should it
surprise us that computers can do so, too
But considering how ChatGPT works, its ability to follow the rules for sonnets seems a little more impressive.
No one taught it these rules. It is based on a newer kind of AI known as a large language model (LLM). To put it
simply, LLMs analyze large amounts of human writing and learn to predict what the next word in a string of text
should be, based on context. One frequent criticism of LLMs is that they do not understand what they write; they
just do a great job of guessing the next word.
When a private verse by Dickinson makes us feel like the poet speaks directly to us, we are experiencing the
effects of a technology called language. Poems are made of paper and ink — or, these days, electricity and light.
There is no one “inside” a Dickinson poem any more than one by ChatGPT. Of course, every Dickinson poem
reflects her intention to create meaning. When ChatGPT puts words together, it does not intend anything. Some
argue that writings by LLMs therefore have no meaning, only the appearance of it. If I see a cloud in the sky that
looks like a giraffe, I recognize it as an accidental similarity. In the same way, this argument goes, we should
regard the writings of ChatGPT as merely imitating real language, meaningless and random as cloud shapes.
When I showed my friends the sonnet by ChatGPT, they called it “soulless and barren.” Despite following all
the rules for sonnets, the poem is predictable. But is the average sonnet by a human any better If we now expect
computers to write not just poems but good poems, then we have set a much higher bar.
32. What is the main idea of paragraph 1 and paragraph 2
A. ChatGPT will make a difference to poetry based on algorithms.
B. There is no doubt that AI can copy the grammatical rules of poetry.
C. Poetry guidelines provide a possibility for AI’s poetry writing.
D. There is a similarity between algorithms and poetry.
33. How does ChatGPT write poems
A. ChatGPT is trained to follow the rules by LLMs.
B. ChatGPT can analyze and predict human languages.
C. ChatGPT is technologically supported by LLMs.
D. ChatGPT itself learn to follow the rules.
34. Why does the author mention Dickinson and cloud in paragraph 4
A. He talks about cloud to describe the meaninglessness of AI’s poetry.
B. He tells of Dickinson to describe the meaninglessness AI’s poetry.
C. He mentions cloud to suggest its close relationship with AI’s poetry.
D. He refers to Dickinson to suggest her close relationship with AI’s poetry.
35. Which of the following can best describe the author’s attitude towards AI poetry
A. Acceptable and favorable B. Amazed and admiring
C. Indifferent and uncaring D. Doubtful and uneasy

How to Express Love
In the complex human relationships, understanding how to show love is important for individuals. There are
several tips from Dr Gary Chapman’s bestselling book The Five Love Languages.
1. Say words of affirmation(肯定)
36 The kind of language is about saying "I love you" in a heartfelt way, offering compliments(赞美),
or providing words of encouragement. Don’t forget that there are various ways to express your admiration beyond
“I love you;” you’d be surprised at the effects achieved by “You mean the world to me,” or “I am proud of you for
trying your best.”
2. Do acts of service
Love isn't just about letting honey-coated words leap from your lips; it's about taking meaningful actions.
Think of making breakfast, doing the dishes when they are tired or helping with house chores without being asked.
37 ; it's the thoughtfulness behind these actions that matter. So, when you make their morning coffee or help
them with a challenging task, you're showing love in action.
3. Send some gifts
For some, sending gifts is a way of saying “You're special to me.” 38 Those who appreciate gifts
often value the thought and effort put into the gifts rather than the monetary value of the gift itself. A small,
meaningful gift such as a handwritten letter, a bouquet of hand-plucked flowers or scrapbook can speak volumes
about your love.
4. 39
Quality time is about setting aside time for deep, meaningful interactions. This can be a heart-to-heart
conversation, going for a long walk together or enjoying a quiet evening at home without the intrusion of phones or
other distractions. 40
By recognising and speaking these love languages, you will create deeper connections.
A. Share quality time.
B. Imagine being in a garden of compliments where words bloom like flowers.
C. Don’t assume that these gifts in question have to come with a big price tag.
D. The focus is on making every moment count and valuing their company.
E. To affirm others is a good way to begin a relationship.
F. Increase quality time.
G. It's not merely about the tasks.

On 8 July, 2017, eight members of a family in total, were enjoying an evening together at the beach in
Panhandle, Florida. As the sun sank lower on the horizon, the two boys Noah, 11, and Stephen, 8—swam into
the waves without the grown-ups’ noticing. Soon they realized that the ocean had pulled them into the sea.
After trying and failing to swim back, they started waving and screaming for help. But the lifeguards had
been off duty for the evening.
The boys had been struggling for several minutes when Jacky and Tabatha, a couple from Georgia,
heard them. They jumped into the water and soon reached the two brothers. But after a few minutes, they
were all caught in a rip current(离岸流)— a powerful one that could sweep even the strongest swimmer out
to sea! By then, some teenagers had heard the cry. One of the teens rushed into the water, grabbed Jacky, and
pulled him back to shore. Meanwhile, Tabatha could feel herself being pulled farther out. She was already
worn out and beginning to feel desperate as she was trying to save both boys alone.
Onshore, Jacky was terrified. A man stopped. “What’s wrong ” asked Shaun, who was heading back to
his car. “My wife is dying in the water!” Jacky said. Shaun immediately strode into the water. But several
minutes later, 15 feet still lay between him and Tabatha and the boys. He knew that if he continued, he’d
become another victim. He turned around to seek help
It was about that time that Roberta, the boys’ mother, returned from the bathroom and looked around
for her children. She was shocked to spot them floating much farther out than they were allowed to go. She
fought the waves to get to her screaming sons and the stranger who was trying to save them, but she quickly
discovered it was nearly impossible to make headway in any direction. Looking around, Roberta sighed with
relief to see some more people coming to help.
