Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student. So at the start of my freshman year, I had an aversion to math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do well, but simply that I didn’t think I was able to do well. “I can’t” became my state of mind in all things related (有关的) to math.
However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t” was not a choice in Mr. A’s class.
Mr. A always greeted (迎接) us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a great day to be alive!” It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion (热情) not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “I can’t” student.
I found myself looking forward to math class, although I still hated the subject itself. Being in Mr. A’s presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed. As the year progressed, I spent increasingly more time on my homework, and I met with Mr. A weekly. My classmates began to do the same, and it became “cool” to have lunch and talk with Mr. A.We didn’t know it at the time, but he was changing our attitudes (态度).
Though my story is not one of overnight success and I didn’t become a straight-A math student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly began to climb. There were hard times, of course. Difficult math questions sometimes succeeded in bringing me down, but Mr. A kept reminding (提醒) me, “Kate, smile! It’s a great day to be alive!”
23.What does the underlined word “aversion” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A.Interest. B.Responsibility. C.Dislike. D.Misunderstanding.
24.What first made the author look forward to math class
A.Mr. A’s attitude.
B.Her interest in math.
C.Her friends’ encouragement.
D.The top achievers in her class.
25.How did the author feel about her talk over lunch with Mr. A
A.It was straight.
B.It was awkward.
C.It was challenging.
D.It was impressive.
26.How did the author change in math
A.She made slow progress.
B.She fell in love with math.
C.She became a straight-A math student.
D.She became comfortable with difficult math questions.

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulties than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly (均匀的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion. Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.
27.What does the discovery show about Westerners
A.They pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth.
B.They consider facial expressions universally reliable.
C.They observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways.
D.They have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions.
28.What were the people asked to do in the study
A.To get their faces impressive. B.To make a face at each other.
C.To classify some face pictures. D.To observe the researchers’ faces.
29.In companion with Westerners, what are Easterners likely to do
A.They do translation more successfully. B.They study the mouth more frequently.
C.They examine the eyes more attentively. D.They read facial expressions more correctly.
30.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.The Eye as the Window to the Soul B.Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions
C.Effective Methods to Develop Social Skills D.How to Increase Cross-cultural Understanding

Learning to pronounce English words correctly can be one of the hardest parts of learning English. Here are some tips to help you pronounce even the difficult English words correctly.
Learn to listen. Before you learn how to speak, you’ll need to learn how to listen. 31 Did the speaker sleep or slip Did he hurt his chin (下巴) or his shin If you can hear the difference, it will be easier to speak the difference.
32 When you speak, you move your mouth. How you move your mouth affects how you pronounce a word. The first step to correcting your mouth shape is to notice it and pay attention. There are a few ways you can check that your mouth and lips are making the correct shape, for example, using a mirror (镜子). 33
Pay attention to your tongue (舌头). The main difference between rice and lice is in your tongue. When you speak, you move your tongue to make sounds. You probably didn’t even notice that, since you do it without thinking. To improve your English pronunciation, it’s a good idea to check what your tongue is doing. Some difficult sounds for non-native speakers to make are the letters “L” and “R”, and the sound “TH”. 34
Break words down into sounds. Words are made up of syllables (音节), or parts. The word “syllable”, for example, has three syllables: syl-la-ble. 35 To check how many syllables a word has, place your hand flat just under your chin. Say the word slowly. Each time your chin touches your hand, that’s a syllable.
Pronunciation is important for you to learn English well. Just remember: Practice makes perfect!
A.Notice how your mouth and lips move.
B.You can even write the word down in parts.
C.Pronouncing them correctly is all in the tongue!
D.Some sounds can be hard to tell apart when you’re listening.
E.Turning words into parts can make them easier to pronounce.
F.Listen to someone speak and write down what they are saying.
G.This is by far the simplest way to tell what your mouth is doing while you talk.

第二节 (满分25分)

When I was a kid, my godparents, Uncle Nell and Aunt Frances, brought me a four-month-old puppy. She was half German shepherd, half collie. As her pink tongue touched my face with wet licks, it was love at first hug.
My family named the puppy Dusty. Although I wanted to lay my only claim to her affections, in a family of seven kids, no one lays permanent claim to the family pet.
Dusty was our dog, not “my” dog. We soon realized that she had the patience of Buddha. My baby sister often transformed Dusty’s warm fur into a nap-time pillow -- falling asleep on the rug. Like a protective mother, Dusty waited -- without moving -- until my sister woke.
Dusty doubled as a school crossing guard, too. Monday through Friday she’d walk us kids two blocks to St. Patrick’s Parochial, looking both ways to check for traffic before allowing us to cross the street. We’d wave good-bye as we entered the door, knowing Dusty would be waiting at the school door to greet us at the close of the school day.
Of all the contributions Dusty made to our family, one incident stands out far and above all others.
Late one night, Dusty rushed to my parents’ bedroom. She barked and barked. When she got no response, Dusty raced upstairs to my bedroom and my brothers’ bedroom and barked again and again. When she failed to fully wake us, she flew back down the steps and returned to my parents’ room. Finally, she got Mom’s attention.
“What are you doing, Dusty ” Mom snapped, still halfway in dreamland. Dusty persisted. Finally my mother gave in.
“Okay, what is it ”
Dusty whined and rushed out of Mom’s room. Thinking the dog needed to be let out to relieve herself, my mother followed Dusty to the front door.

61.Dear Mike,
Glad to receive your email. Now, I’d like to tell you something about the widely used Scan to Pay in China.
With the development of the Internet and technology, it is becoming more and more popular and now it plays an important role in people’s daily life.
You just need to download an app, like WeChat or Alipay, and get it installed in your smartphone. If you want to pay for anything you buy, scan the QR code. Almost all shops provide their own QR codes and shoppers also have their own.
It is very convenient because wherever you are, you can pay for whatever you buy by using your smartphone. In this way, you don’t need to carry money or credit cards with you.
If you want to know more about it, come to China. Looking forward to your arrival.
Yours,
Li Hua
62. When Mom opened the door, she discovered the house across the street -- where my best friend, Marianne, lived -- was on fire. All of Dusty’s middle-of-the-night craziness had served a purpose: she’s been trying to call for help. My mother alerted the fire department immediately. Soon, the firemen in their trucks roared up the street, squelching the blaze and saving my best friend’s family from harm and their house from total ruin.
My mother refused to take the credit. “It was Dusty,” she told the firefighters. “She saved them. Not me.” I put my arms around my dog’s neck and fondly kissed her square on the tip of her wet nose. “Thank you for saving Marianne,” I whispered into Dusty’s tan and black ear. “You’re the bravest dog that I’ve ever known. I am proud of you.” Dusty wagged her tail and licked my face. That old familiar rush of puppy love overtook me. I smiled and promised to let her sleep in my bed for the rest of her life.
