Karla, a recent graduate of one high school in Los Angeles, designed an 18th century-style dress for the yearly “Stuck at Prom” competition and was named a finalist last week.
Unlike what we normally expect, the dress is surprisingly made out of duct tape(胶带)Tape is so rigid and you can’t move it like fabric. So it was really challenging to make it all come together. But the fashion-forward teenager overcame that challenge and is now competing for votes to win the grand prize: a $10, 000 scholarship.
Though it’s Karla’name officially in the competition, she said the entire process is more of a collective effort of her family, especially her parents. She and her mom spent at least 120 hours, over many days, working on the dress by trial and error, and used 14 rolls of tape.
“I really love fashion. It’s a really big passion of mine, and I’m willing to try any style.” she said. She often spends hours looking at outfit ideas or different styles, from the 70s to Gothic to Rococo, on Pinterest and TikTok-which is how she found the competition. But it wasn’t until a recent visit to the Getty Museum-the only field trip she took in high school-that she found her inspiration from the 18th century French paintings featuring lavish, ornate dresses and eventually created the possibly award-winning dress.
“It means a lot to me that I was able to make it this far with the support of my parents. As the first generation college student in our family, I wouldn’t want my parents to pay for my tuition(学费)Although there is a long way to go to get the $10, 000 prize, it would really help my parents, and we’re feeling confident and hopeful that we can win.” Karla said. She plans to study business marketing in college, ideally focusing on the fashion industry.
24. What do we know about Karla
A. She learned about the competition by chance.
B. Her parents can’t afford her tuition for college.
C. She entered a competition and won the grand prize.
D. She designed an 18th century-style dress independently
25. What inspired Karla to create this special dress
A. The rigid duct tape. B. The “Stuck at Prom” competition.
C. The French paintings in the Getty Museum. D. The different styles on Pinterest and TikTok.
26. Which of the following best describes Karla
A. Generous and thankful. B. Ambitious and well-rounded.
C. Creative and thoughtful. D. Determined and humorous.
27. What is the passage mainly about
A. A girl’s supportive family. B. A dress made out of duct tape.
C. An eye-catching fashion competition. D. A teen’s effort to win a scholarship.

Are you the kind of person who always keeps a bar of chocolate nearby Perhaps you feel weak or sleepy without your sweets. If so you may have a problem that millions of others have: sugar addiction.
Addiction means using a substance or doing an activity over and over again, in spite of its bad effects. Playing computer games, drinking, and eating arc examples of activities that can develop into addictions.
There are four stages (阶段) of behavior that happen during a sugar addiction. Stage one begins with a strong wish for something sweet. This happens because sugar causes the body to produce dopamine (多巴胺). It is a chemical that creates feelings of happiness. In stage two, even after sugar has been eaten, the desire remains and grows. This is because the body becomes less sensitive (敏感) to the effect of sugar over time. So, it is necessary to eat more sugar to produce the positive emotions. In stage three, when a sugar need is not satisfied, the person feels bad. Sugar addicts experience bad emotional symptoms (症状). They also feel physical symptoms, such as headaches, sleepiness, and lack of energy. Over time, a sugar addiction will reach stage four. This is when the worst health effects of sugar addiction can be seen. Unhealthy body weight and depression are examples.
Breaking a sugar addiction can be challenging, but it is important for your health. There are a few things to keep in mind. It’s simple advice you probably have heard before. Eat three meals a day, get enough sleep, and exercise often. Choose healthy sweets, like fruit, and avoid salty snacks. These usually cause people to want to eat sweets. Don’t push yourself too hard. Remember that lifestyle changes happen slowly.
28. What causes people to become addicted to sugar
A. Having pieces of chocolate at hand. B. Feeling the effects of dopamine.
C. Tasting sugar in regular foods. D. Experiencing a lack of energy.
29. In which stage of a sugar addiction may people become overweight
A. In stage one. B. In stage two. C. In stage three. D. In stage four.
30. What is mentioned as a piece of advice for breaking a sugar addiction
A. Sleeping less. B. Eating salt. C. Exercising often. D. Avoiding sweets.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. The Complete Guide To Beating Sugar Addiction
B. Sugar Addiction In Children And How To Get Over It
C. Sugar Addiction: Your First Step Is Your First Call
D. Sugar Addiction: A Problem That Millions Of People Have

Cancer-fighting genes in elephants could help tackle one of the biggest killers of people, according to research. Despite their large bodies and long lifespans, elephants are much less likely to die from cancer than humans, with death rates of less than 5 percent.
The paradox has puzzled scientists because more cells lead to greater replications (复制), which increases the possibility of the body failing to detect damaged DNA or a faulty cell that can result in tumors(肿瘤). Elephants live for almost as long as humans and weigh up to five tons.
However, a group of British and European scientists say they have taken a big step towards solving Peto’s paradox, named after the British epidemiologist Sir Richard Peto. Elephants, they say, carry a much larger more diverse group of tumor-fighting proteins.
The findings, published last week in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution, raise hopes that the cancer fighting genes in elephants could be the key to tackling cancer, which kills about 167, 000 Britons yearly. Cells keep dividing throughout an organism’s life, each carrying the risk of producing a tumor. One of the body’s weapons is a gene called p53 known as the “guardian of the genome”, which hunts cells with faulty DNA. It encourages the cell to repair itself or self-destruct, keeping the cell from combining with others and producing tumors.
Humans have two versions of p53 but elephants have 40, said the researchers. Biochemical analysis and computer simulations also showed that an elephant’s p53 genes are structurally slightly different, providing a much larger anti-cancer toolkit. The researchers suspect that while faulty cells might be able to skirt two p53 versions, they cannot combine with other cells as easily in the face of dozens.
The findings will open the way for research on how p53 genes of elephants are activated and on medical treatment for humans.
32. What has puzzled scientists
A. Few elephants end up dying from cancer. B. Elephants live long and weigh enormously.
C. More cells lead to higher chances of tumors. D. A larger body is less likely to discover faulty cells.
33. What can be learnt from Paragraph 4
A. How many Britons die each year. B. How the anti-cancer gene works.
C. How the research was carried out. D. What the findings have been applied to.
34. What does the underlined word “skirt” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A Strengthen. B. Detect. C. Escaped. D. Cure.
35. Which is the text mainly about
A. Scientists find elephants live longer than humans. B. P53 genes play essential role in preventing cancer.
C. Elephant genes could be key to fighting cancer. D. Groundbreaking treatment for cancer is on the way.

It was February 16, 2019, at 8 a. m. when my girlfriend, Jessika, and I arrived at Utah’s Zion National Park. We’d traveled from our home in Mesa, Arizona, to hike the nine-mile-long Subway Trail, so named because of its amazing tunnel-shaped canyon (峡谷). Halfway through our hike, which included climbing over rocks and walking across streams, the sunshine gave way to a light snow. Soon after, we reached the red-colored walls of the Subway Trail. A small pond stood in our way, with the trail (路线) continuing on the other side. Because the pond looked shallow, we began to wade (蹚水) through, with Jessika leading the way.
About five feet from the edge, her front foot sank into the sandy bottom. Then she fell forward and both legs started to sink. I dashed to her, grabbed her under the shoulders, and pulled her out. She climbed back to shore. But now I was sinking. The mud came all the way up to my right thigh and my left calf (小腿肚). I freed my left leg but couldn’t move my right.
Jess handed me a long stick we’d picked up earlier in the hike. I put it down the side of my leg and tried to move and pull it out. Nothing. I was trapped in quicksand (流沙) .
Jessika started scooping (舀) sand with both hands, but it was refilling faster than she could pull it out. “Don’t bother,” I told her. “You’re just wasting your energy.” While I was no longer sinking, I wasn’t getting out, either.
We couldn’t call for help because the closest rescue team was back at the trailhead, five hours away from us. I told Jessika she had to hike back and call for help. She was scared-she had only ever hiked with me and was fearful of hiking alone on a trail the National Park Service calls “very tough.” But we were out of options.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Thirty minutes after she left, it started to snow heavily.

【原文】A new era of AI (artificial intelligence) is coming. AI has made its way into a variety of industries, which benefits both businesses and consumers. More and more companies have used it in their products, such as AlphaGo, self-driving, facial recognition, online assistants and so on. Generally, there are two types of AI: weak AI and strong AI. Weak AI is an AI system that is designed and trained to complete a specific task. For example, Apple’s Siri can answer people’s simple questions and obey a programmed order. But it can’t work without humans. Strong AI differs from weak AI in this part most. Strong AI can solve problems and find solutions without humans, such as the self-driving car. It can control a vehicle without human involvement, and avoid unexpected obstacles, such as passersby. As a whole, AI can make human life easy and convenient, and many experts believe the future of AI is bright. But it is expensive and requires complex systems to operate. There are still many problems to solve, such as …

Are you the kind of person who always keeps a bar of chocolate nearby Perhaps you feel weak or sleepy without your sweets. If so, you may have a problem that millions of others have: sugar addiction.
28 What causes people to become addicted to sugar

A. Strengthen. B. Detect. C. Escaped. D. Cure.
35. Which is the text mainly about
A. Scientists find elephants live longer than humans. B. P53 genes play essential role in preventing cancer.
C. Elephant genes could be key to fighting cancer. D. Groundbreaking treatment for cancer is on the way.
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. C 35. C

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一项研究,表明大象的抗癌基因可能是对抗癌症的关键。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“Despite their large bodies and long lifespans, elephants are much less likely to die from cancer than humans, with death rates of less than 5 percent. (尽管大象的身体很大,寿命也很长,但它们死于癌症的可能性比人类小得多,死亡率不到5%。)”可知,让科学家们感到困惑的是很少有大象最终死于癌症。故选A项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Cells keep dividing throughout an organism’s life, each carrying the risk of producing a tumor. One of the body’s weapons is a gene called p53 known as the ‘guardian of the genome’, which hunts cells with faulty DNA. It encourages the cell to repair itself or self-destruct, keeping the cell from combining with others and producing tumors. (细胞在生物体的一生中不断分裂,每个细胞都有产生肿瘤的风险。人体的武器之一是被称为‘基因组守护者’的p53基因,它会搜寻有缺陷DNA的细胞。它鼓励细胞自我修复或自我毁灭,防止细胞与其他细胞结合并产生肿瘤。)”可知,从本段我们可以了解到抗癌基因是如何工作的。故选B项。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中“One of the body’s weapons is a gene called p53 known as the ‘guardian of the genome’, which hunts cells with faulty DNA. (人体的武器之一是被称为‘基因组守护者’的p53基因,它会搜寻有缺陷DNA的细胞。)”和划线词句前文“Humans have two versions of p53 but elephants have 40, said the researchers. Biochemical analysis and computer simulations also showed that an elephant’s p53 genes are structurally slightly different, providing a much larger anti-cancer toolkit. (研究人员说,人类有两种p53基因,但大象有40种。生化分析和计算机模拟还表明,大象的p53基因在结构上略有不同,这提供了一个更大的抗癌工具包。)”可知,p53基因具有抗癌作用,人类有两种此类基因,而大象却有40种,从而推知划线词句“The researchers suspect that while faulty cells might be able to skirt two p53 versions, they cannot combine with other cells as easily in the face of dozens. (研究人员怀疑,虽然有缺陷的细胞可能能够skirt两种p53,但面对几十种,它们无法轻易与其他细胞结合。)”其中划线词汇意思是“绕过,逃避,躲避”,即有缺陷的细胞(致癌细胞)有可能躲避两种抗癌基因,但是不容易躲避几十种。故选C项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第四段中“The findings, published last week in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution, raise hopes that the cancer fighting genes in elephants could be the key to tackling cancer, which kills about 167, 000 Britons yearly. 67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jess handed me a long stick we’d picked up earlier in the hike I put it down the side of my leg and tried to move and pull it out.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Thirty minutes after she left, it started to snow heavily.

Just as I was going to give up, a flashlight shone across my eyes.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Thirty minutes after she left, it started to snow heavily. It was freezing cold. I zipped up my jacket and pulled my head inside. At some point I nodded off to sleep. I didn’t know how long I had slept, but I woke up with my upper body slipping backward into the quicksand. I quickly planted my stick into the dry ground to stop my fall. Wet and exhausted, I couldn’t even feel my right leg. It had been hours since Jessika left, and it was getting dark. Maybe this time I wasn’t going to make it, I thought desperately to myself.
Just as I was going to give up, a flashlight shone across my eyes. It must be the rescuers! I yelled for help at once. Jessika appeared in the darkness and rushed to me in a great hurry, followed by the rescue team. They gathered around me very soon and started working. The team held me under each shoulder and tried to pull me out with the help of some tools. When they pulled, it felt as if my leg were being ripped off. Finally, I was saved out of the quicksand. Tears welling up in our eyes, Jessika and I thanked the team with all our hearts gratefully. I was trapped for so long that I thought for sure I would die. But I didn’t.
