One night, a thief walked into her house.
One night, a thief tiptoed into her house.
He cried when it was time for us to leave.
He wept bitterly when it was time for us to leave.
He was laughing.
He was grinning from ear to ear.
She was afraid of going out alone.
She was scared of going out alone.
2】 Seeing from the top of the mountain, the village looks more beautiful.
Seen from the top of the mountain, the village looks more beautiful.
1】Having experienced so many failures one after another, she finally picked herself up.
Experienced so many failures one after another, she finally picked herself up.
2】Devoted to his research work, the professor cared little about any other things.
Devoting to his research work, the professor cared little about any other things.
3】She was terrified at the thought of being alone.
She was terrified at the thought of alone.
3】She laughed, her eyes shining.
She laughed, her eyes were shining.
1】She froze, her mouth hanging open.
She froze, her mouth was hanging open.
【变式2】Jessica sighing with relief, the pair hugged each other and shed tears of excitement.
Jessica sighed with relief, the pair hugged each other and shed tears of excitement.
3】she sat there still, tears rolling down her cheeks.
【易错】she sat there still, tears rolled down her cheeks.
4】Mick froze with terror, too scared to move an inch.
Mick froze with terror, was too scared to move an inch.
1】Her heart leaped with joy.
Her heart leaped with joyful.
2】The day was cold but clear.
The day was cold but clearly.
【变式3】Jack’s face flushed/burned with embarrassment.
Jack’s face flushed/burned with embarrassed.
5】When faced with the great challenge, he had a frown on his face.
When facing with the great challenge, he had a frown on his face.
1】Not only did we see it but also we touched it.
Not only we see it but also we touched it.
2】Honesty is the most important quality that I want him to possess.
Honesty is the most important quality which I want him to possess.
3】Not a word did he say that day.
Not a word he said that day.

Green Thumb
All I did was show my little sister how to grow plants. Dig a hole. Put in a seed. Cover it with dirt. Water it. Wait. “See, Laynie,” I explained, “a whole plant will grow from this tiny seed. All we have to do is water it.”
Laynie had her own watering can so she could “help” me in the garden. One day, after everything was watered, she ran to the fence and started sprinkling water on another spot. I walked over and saw a fresh patch of dirt near the fence.
“Did you plant something there ” I asked.
“Yes,” she said. “I’m growing a pencil. My purple pencil got too small, so I planted it.”
“What But, Laynie—”
I should have explained things right then, but I just muttered, “Uh…I never grew one before.”
Later I got what seemed like a great idea. I dug up Laynie’s pencil and “planted” a brand-new purple pencil. Laynie was really excited when she saw it. “My pencil grew!” she shouted.
A few days later, Laynie was watering on the same spot. Two days later, new crayons sticking their pointy little heads out, thanks to me. Laynie jumped up and down and yelled, “They look like flowers!” She “picked” them and ran into the house.
Next, Laynie grew an adult bear doll from a tiny one, a soup spoon from a teaspoon, and a hand mirror from a piece of glass. When she claimed that she had grown these things, I just kept my mouth shut! Actually, it was fun trying to think of what should grow from Laynie’s seeds. And it was cool to see her get excited.
One day I saw her patting down some dirt near the fence again, so I knew she’d just planted something. My heart dropped to my feet when she asked, “How long does it take to grow a goldfish, Brad ” I couldn’t speak.
“Not long, I bet!” said Laynie. She knelt down to whisper “Grow, Molly. Grow!” before she skipped back to the house.

I sat down with my back to the fence and thought for a long time. Sighing, I decided there was only one right thing to do. I got up, took some things from the shed, and went inside. When I displayed the short pencil, the crayons, the teaspoon... on the table, Laynie was dumbfounded. Then I explained how I’d dug up and replaced all of her things. “No!” she screamed, red-faced. With a big shove, she knocked everything off the table. “Laynie,” I swallowed hard and added, “Molly isn’t going to grow either.” At this, she burst into tears and ran off. The heart pierced with guilt, I felt like a worm.
Later I found Laynie silting by the spot where Molly was buried. I sat down beside her, gently held her in my embrace and apologized. Laynie turned her face away. I went on, ‘‘See, you can grow things from seeds—not from pencils or... dead things. OK ” “Just seeds ” she asked, face still tear-stained. I nodded. She looked at me for a minute as if thinking about something. Later that day, after we had a funeral for Molly, I saw Laynie patting down some dirt on Molly’s grave. My heart tightened. “I’m growing some forget-me-nots, so Molly won’t forget me,” she said. This time, I thought “the green thumb” would have a real harvest.

My dad and I had been looking forward to the Stale cross-country race of my senior year of high school, which would be the climax (顶点) of my existence.
I was the fastest runner on my team, and I was supposed to make it into the top fifteen. We had been working towards this race for three years. It was everything to me, and it was everything to my dad. He was a runner and was wild with joy by my success in running. He made it to every race, even flying home early from business trips to see me run. I always listened for his voice, which rang above the crowd-telling me to relax my arms, calling out my time. He pushed me. He cheered for me. He believed in me. We spent countless hours on the sandy canals of Arizona. Breathing in the dust of the desert, the blossoms of the orange trees, and the terrible smell of the dairy farm, we made our way across the city. We pounded miles and miles into our running shoes, marking with every step the path to greatness. It was a journey that was just ours. A dream passed on from one generation to the next.
Then the big day came. It was hotter than normal - too hot. My throat felt like a field of cotton, cracked with the summer heat, as I waited for the gun to fire. I gazed out at the crowd; dozens of familiar faces from church and school flickered across my view. They had come for me. They were counting on me. I saw my dad set his watch, worry and excitement etched across his face. With the sound of a gunshot, the race began.
For the first two and half miles, I felt great. I had never before been so ready for something. The weeks leading up to the race were filled with hard practices and a strict diet. The scorching sun beat upon my back, blinding me with its brilliance. Nothing was going to stop me, though.

I whispered, “I’m so sorry I disappointed you, Dad.”
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
However, without warning, my strength was running out. My lungs fought to take in enough air, and my feet transformed into cement bricks. Neck and neck with one of my greatest rivals, I could see the finish line. I had begun the final sprint into glory when my knees buckled and my legs gave way. Nothing I could do would make them hold my weight. They were as weak as jelly. Even though I knew my dreams of victory had been destroyed, I had to finish the race. With all of the strength left in me, I got on my hands and knees and crawled, inch by inch, across the finish line. Shame pulsed through my veins as Dad squatted down and pulled me into his arms.
I whispered, “I’m so sorry I disappointed you, Dad.” He gave me a gentle smile and said, “You could never disappoint me. Sometimes these things just happen. All that matters is that you did your best.” Lifting my face, I saw my dad’s eyes, in which I saw the sweat, the time, and the work we had put into our dream. The miles we had run together, all for this race, flashed across my mind. “But we worked so hard. What about our dream” I asked. In that second, the world stood still. He reached over for my hand, holding back his own tears, and said, “Don’t you know that you are my dream come true ”

We sat on the bus waiting while other passengers piled on. A blond-haired girl, about nineteen years old, took the seat in front of us. The bus driver followed behind her. He demanded her fare.
“You pay $40 or get off the bus!” the driver said.
“I paid already. Yesterday, online,” the girl insisted.
“No, no record of it!” the bus driver pointed to the paper in his hand and waved it in her face. “See. No pay! You pay, or you must get off.” He angrily pointed to the exit door.
“But I don’t have money. And I paid already. Please.”
The bus driver picked up his mobile phone and made a call to find out if there had been an error with the paperwork. After failing to get through, he was getting angrier with the girl. So he cut the call and didn’t try.
“No, you have not paid. You must pay.”
“But please, I don’t have any money on me. I must get to LA today. Please.”
Tears streamed down her face.
I had boarded a bus headed to Los Angeles. I was very excited about experiencing LA.My dream of visiting Disney Land was about to come true. But while I sat there comfortably in my seat, thinking about my next adventure, this young girl was in tears, with a man standing over her, demanding money.
I wasn’t sure what I should do. Was she telling the truth It wouldn’t be the first time someone had extracted money by telling a sad story that turned out untrue. Did she really not have any money Maybe the bus driver would show some sympathy and allow her to sort the payment out later
But no, the bus driver continued to demand she pay $40 or get off the bus. The young girl insisted that she didn’t have enough money for the fare and had no one she could contact for help. It seemed the driver would throw her off the bus.

To act with integrity was a habit with Susan who always follows the Golden Rule: “Do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you.” But when she thought over her past conduct, a blush of shame crept to her cheeks, as many little acts of selfishness and unkindness came back to her memory. She resolved that for the future, both in great things and small. she would remember and follow the Golden Rule.
It was not long after this that an opportunity occurred, which tried Susan’s principles. One Saturday evening when she went, as usual, to Mr. Thompson’s inn, to receive the money of her mother’s washing for him, which amounted to five dollars, she found Mr. Thompson apparently in a terrible rage with some horse dealers with whom he had been bargaining. He held in his hand an open pocketbook (钱袋子) , full of bills and scarcely noticing Susan as she made her request, except to swear at her for troubling him when he was busy, he handed her a banknote.
Glad to escape so easily, Susan hurried out of the gate. Pausing to put the money safely in her purse, she discovered that he had given her two bills instead of one. She looked around; nobody was near and her first impulse was joy at the unexpected prize.
“It is all mine,” said she to herself. “I will buy my mother a new coat with it, and she can give her old one to my sister Mary, and then Mary can go to the Sunday school with me next winter. I wonder if I can buy a pair of shoes for my brother Tom, too.”
At that moment she remembered that he must have given it to her by mistake. But again the voice of the tempter whispered, “He gave it, and how do you know that he did not intend to make you a present of it Keep it! He will never know it, for he had too many such bills in that great pocketbook.”

During the summer vacation, a mother planned an exciting trip with her two children. They were set to explore a famous tourist spot, famous for its breath-taking landscapes and attractions. Little did they know that their adventure would take an unexpected turn.
As they arrived at the destination, they were greeted by a sea of people. The place was overflowing with tourists from all over the globe. Excitement filled the air as families began their sightseeing adventures, creating a lively and vibrant atmosphere.
Eager to begin their own adventure, the mother, holding the hands of her two children, dove into the crowd. However, among the crowded army of tourists, fate had its own plans in store. In the chaos of the massive crowd, the younger son, unaware of the chaos unfolding around him, somehow managed to wander off, unknowingly leaving his family behind.
Suddenly, the mother realized that her younger child was no longer beside her. Panic seized her heart, and a sense of helplessness occupied her. She desperately called out her son’s name, her voice trembling with fear. Tears streamed down her face as she scanned the vast sea of people for her son, but there was no sign of him.
In a state of despair, the mother sought assistance from fellow passionate minds instantly joined in the search, spreading word about the lost child throughout the area. Strangers joined in the search, their hearts filled with empathy for the anxious mother.

The neighborhood kids nicknamed the strange old couple Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose. Rumor was that they sat inside and drank tea all day. The only words we ever heard from them were “Keep out of our rosebushes!”
The rosebushes served as a fence between our house and theirs. I was eleven at the time and the oldest of six active girls. We should have played our softball games elsewhere to avoid hurting the roses, but we secretly enjoyed annoying Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose. One day, we had a neighborhood softball game in our yard. Mary was trying to catch a fly ball. She stumbled (绊倒) over one of Ruby Rednose’s rosebushes and fell on top of several more. Just at that moment, Ruby Rednose sprang out and ran toward Mary. She screamed angrily, “Look at what you’ve done to our family’s roses! You’ve always been a trouble. You have no idea what this rosebush means to me!”
Hearing this, my sisters and I ran into our house. Breathlessly, we told Mom what had happened. “Girls, I have told you not to play softball near those e outside right now and help me fix them.” “Mom, we thought you didn’t like the couple,” we protested. “They’re mean to us.” Mom just glared at us. We followed her outside to help repair the rose fence. While Mom was examining the damaged roses, Ruby slowly walked out. She looked sad. And it wasn’t her nose that was red — it was her eyes.

Ruby walked over to my mother, we girls holding our breath. We waited to see who would shout first and what terrible things would be said. “We are sorry about the flowers. The girls will fix them and help weed the roses.” My sisters and I looked at each other in horror, but Ruby smiled through her tears. “I know we’re particular about these roses, but they’re very special because they remind me of my mother.” Soon both women were down on their knees examining the damaged bushes together
A few weeks later, the plants all came back to life. My mother and Ruby worked together on the roses all summer and many summers to follow. So did my sisters and I. A friendship was formed between the families. Ruby became part of our family, spending many happy hours at our house, especially during countless birthdays, graduations and weddings. And the rose fence wasn’t a fence any longer. My mother had turned it into a bridge.

Imagine sitting at your breakfast table having a cup of coffee when all of a sudden you see someone about to die. What would you do Last Christmas, John Gelinne found out.
On Dec. 26, Gelinne, 60, was watching out the back windows of his home in Edgewater, Maryland, at frozen Beards Creek (河流). Children and grandchildren were running around the house. That’s when Gelinne looked up just in time to see a small plane a few hundred yards away, losing altitude
As the plane disappeared behind the trees, Gelinne, a former Navy commander, realized it was going to land in the creek. He flashed on a moment from more than20 years earlier: Sept. 11, 2001. Gelinne was at work in the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., when terrorists (恐怖分子) crashed a plane into the building. He escaped but has always wondered if he could have stayed inside and
“To the right was the crisis, and to the left was escape. I don’t even know if I could have gone right, but I went left,” he recalled. “I always second-guessed myself about that decision.”
On this day, Gelinne didn’t hesitate. He ran down to the waterfront. The plane had slipped to a stop on the broad, frozen creek, far from the shore. It was now sinking. The pilot was standing on the wing. Gelinne knew from his Navy training that even a few minutes in the icy water could kill the pilot.
Gelinne tested the ice with his foot and decided not to take any chances walking on it. So he and his son, John Ir., 37, pulled two kayaks(皮艇) out.
“I figured, if it can float on the water, it can slide on the ice,” Gelinne says. The kayaks’ paddles (桨) proved easily broken, so the pair tried using shovels (铁铲) to push the boats along. Their first attempts left them moving in circles. But with some muscle, they made progress.

The two men set off, pushing their boats across the ice. When they reached the plane, the pilot was standing on the sinking wing, and the icy water was up to his chest. John Ir. tried to pull him onto his kayak, while Gelinne helped prevent their kayaks from turning over. It was hard work, but Gelinne knew that they had to hurry before the pilot got frozen. With great strength, they tried again and again, until they made it. They struggled their way back.
They finally arrived at the shore with great efforts. The pilot was still alive, but they were all tired. Gelinne’s family and people in the neighbourhood had come to the shore with blankets, applying first aid and the ambulance was waiting nearby. The pilot expressed his gratitude to Gelinne and his son for saving his life. “I’m 60 years old. It nearly killed me to get him to the shore.” Gelinne recalled. Still, he was satisfied that he’d gone the right way that day.

Positive Action Fuels Hope
“I’m not going back to group therapy (治疗). I refuse to be treated like that.” The voice was so loud that I had to hold the phone away from my ear.
Alicia Gonzalez suffered from depression. This was her second month at the homeless shelter, where I work as a case manager.
Alicia had been a nurse for 10 years. Her work was intense and demanding, and she loved it. To her, the trauma (精神创伤) she’d suffered was that her son lost his life in a car crash. With her brain overloaded by the trauma, she couldn’t focus on her work. Finally, she had to quit her job. With no income, she couldn’t pay her rent. For almost three years, Alicia lived in her truck. Alicia told me all this at our first meeting.
“I want to help you,” I said. “There are lots of resources here. All I ask is that you tell me what’s going on with you. That way I can make sure you’re getting the services you need.”
“I’ll try,” she said. “It’s just hard. I used to feel as though what I did mattered. Now...” Her voice became quiet. Before I could say something, she stood and walked out of the room.
Two months later, I still felt as if I hadn’t gotten through to Alicia. Sometimes the things sending her into a violent anger were so minor—a piece of rubbish someone had dropped on the floor—it was hard for me to think of coping skills that didn’t sound like I was criticizing her.
Maybe this latest talk in group therapy was the last straw (稻草). “Finding something small you can feel good about can help you cope with anger,” I suggested. “It doesn’t need to be some huge thing.” Even as I said it, I wondered, “Was that really the best advice I could come up with ” Alicia took a long deep breath. “I know,” she said.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A few weeks later, I saw her in the hallway with a rubbish bag. She was picking up a candy wrapper on the floor. Her mouth wasn’t pressed into an angry line. Actually, she was smiling. What was going on She must have seen the question in my eyes. “Someone did it,” she said in a silky tone. We didn’t have a cleaning service at the shelter, but soon Alicia had the place shining. She cleaned the hallways and emptied the dustbins. She still called me a lot, but more and more it was to tell me how great a therapy session went.
In March, Alicia was offered a job doing housekeeping at the shelter. It’s a part of work therapy. She has found that housekeeping gives her the calm to learn coping skills. And she’s studying for the courses she’ll need to renew her nursing license. Her life again focuses on helping others. “I think I can make a difference,” she told me the other day. She’s right about that, but Alicia deserves a lot of the credit, too. I think of her when I’m struggling at work, and I remember that every journey starts with a single small step.

Every June, we renew an annual tradition at our house in a lovely neighbourhood. Our children are given bowls and asked to collect pieces of nature that remind them of the summer. They leave those bowls on the front doorstep and we go for a walk. When we return, we find fairies( 仙子) have transformed the bowls’ contents into ice cream sundaes (圣代冰淇淋).
I’m not certain how this tradition evolved. I think I was making up something about fairies years ago, and it all just sort of happened. But ever since, it has been one of our favourite routine activities, fascinated with its magic.
“When are the fairies coming ” six-year-old Anna had been asking all last June, eager with expectation. Meanwhile, John, nine, was getting wise to fairies and Father Christmas and such silly things. So he was pretty sure about how all the “magic” came about as the evening approached. “You know, I had everything worked out!” He said he would understand if, during our walk, Mum or Dad should forget something and return home or during the walk a parent might have to fetch something in the car. Many times, we were even thinking of telling him the truth but we didn’t. Anna should enjoy the magic.
The evening arrived as expected. The children collected leaves and blades of grass, pebbles, twigs (树枝) and dead insects. We put their bowls on the front doorstep and went off on our walk as usual. But after a while, I pretended to complain that I had forgotten my keys and needed to go back.
John smiled with a knowing expression. “Oh wait,” I added. “I’ve found them! I don’t have to go back.” As we continued on our way, John was beginning to get a bit confused.
Near our house, after exchanging a glance with my husband, I anxiously warned that the fairies might not have arrived yet — we might need to walk for a bit longer. Hearing what I said, John seemed relieved. “Yes,” he said, “they probably hadn’t come!” Yet when we reached the front door, the bowls were in the same place we had left them — filled exactly with ice cream sundaes.

Seeing this, the two kids gave quite different responses. Anna accepted all this with complete innocence, happy and excited and eager to eat, looking forward to the coming of fairies next year. But John was astonished, speechless, humbled. He looked up at me, at his dad, then gazed around the neighbourhood in amazement. “The fairies must have come,” he said hesitantly as we all sat down to feast. “Maybe… is there really… was this magic ” For the whole night, John was thinking about these events in his heart and mind.
It was late but the confusion kept John wide awake, and finally he came to me. “Mummy,” he whispered. “I can’t sleep. You have to tell me how, please!” Now I knew it was necessary to answer a direct question with a direct answer, so I told him the truth. I had asked a friendly neighbour to help us perform the trick. Shortly after we left for a walk, she went to our house secretly and switched the bowls. John smiled in relief and thanked me for telling him the truth. Then he went to his bed and fell asleep soundly. Just at that moment, I believed in magic too.

Timmy was a boy aged twelve. One day, while he was walking home from school, he found a stray (流浪的) dog wandering aimlessly on the street. The poor creature looked dirty and hungry. It looked up at Timmy with big, pleading eyes, as if to say, “Please take me home.” Timmy couldn’t resist the sad face of the small dog. Without hesitation, Timmy decided to take the dog home with him. He knew that his parents would be surprised because they had never kept a pet, but he couldn’t bear the thought of leaving the animal alone. When he arrived home, he introduced the dog to his family. To his surprise, his parents agreed to let it stay.
Timmy named the dog Max, and the two quickly became inseparable. They spent their days playing together in the park and exploring the countryside. Max was always by Timmy’s side, whether he was riding his bike or playing soccer with his friends. When Timmy returned home from school, Max would run to him and jump up into his arms, licking his face with joy.
One sunny day, Timmy and Max were playing in the park when they came across a beautiful pond. Max couldn’t resist the temptation (诱惑) to take a swim in the cool water, so it ra n towards the pond. Timmy followed it, but as soon as they reached the edge of the pond, Max jumped right in without any hesitation.
